2024 Oak Tree Status MLB Breakouts, Busts, Dark Horses, Favorite Prospects, & Predictions for all 30 MLB teams.
Let's see if I can top last year's predictions!
Gonna start my 2023 edition of this. My 2020 picks were pretty solid, if I do say so myself, but COVID messed up a lot of that season and I haven't done it since.
Without further ado, my 2023 MLB Breakouts, Busts, Dark Horses, and Favorite Prospects:
Broncos’ plan since 2020:
1) draft excellent route running WR
2) draft fast field-stretching WR
3) extend reliable hands WR
4) extend former Pro Bowl WR
5) design offense to never ever throw to WR
The Colorado Rockies DFA'ed Tom Murphy in spring of 2019.
Since then, the Rockies' primary catcher has accrued -0.6 fWAR.
In that same time frame, Tom Murphy has posted 5.5 fWAR.
Turns out that Kris Bryant didn’t do his due diligence in reasearching the Colorado Rockies, who were actually bad, when they offered him a huge contract without doing their due diligence, because he was actually bad.
The Colorado Rockies
- got swept 🧹
- by a team that had 💯 losses last season
- at home 🏔
- by a combined score of 33-9 😳
Not sure how much lower it can get
Reasons not to be a Rockies fan:
- poor job of developing talent
- poor free agency decisions
- GM is condescending to fans/journalists/star players
- commitment to mediocrity
- won’t pay minor leaguers
- heartbreak
Reasons to be a Rockies fan:
- I grew up in Colorado
I dunno.
I gotta say: when the City Connects are worn with the white pants, they're actually a really clean look. The Rockies somehow came away from the whole City Connect thing as one of the only MLB clubs that should keep the uniform.
Todd Helton is the best Colorado Rockie of all time. One man before him came close, maybe one man since. But there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s the greatest to have ever worn the CR.
I really hope people are patient with Paxton Lynch. Remember: Peyton Manning led the league in picks his first season and John Elway didn't know how to read a defense. Players grow.
I really hope people are patient with Trevor Siemien. Remember: Peyton Manning led the league in
Rockies fans: wanna die a little more inside?
Since the trade deadline:
CJ Cron: .224/.296/.388, 68 wRC+
Jose Iglesias: .311/.313/.400, 80 wRC+
Alex Colomé: 23.63 ERA, 0-2, 1 blown save, IL (forearm)
Chad Kuhl: made 1 start, 16.20 ERA, 0-1, IL (hip)
For real though:
I like Kris Bryant. At his best he’s been a better bat than Nolan. He’s a refreshing change for the Rockies in that he gets on base really well. He’s a great baseball player. He makes the Rockies better. And I still don’t get it.
The Rockies are terrible - maybe historically so!
But would I rather watch a marginally better team with vets like Mike Moustakas, Jurickson Profar, Randal Grichuk, and CJ Cron?
No.
Guess who has the 5th-best xFIP in the AAA International League and is striking out a batter per inning, while drastically reducing his walk rate, all while being only 23 years old
This is a baffling trade. The
#Rockies
are desperate for pitching and utterly logjammed in the outfield and middle infield... So they traded their no. 15 prospect-a pitcher-to the Rays for a 26-year-old OF/SS that's their no. 24 prospect.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
@latimes
I am graciously inviting any Dodgers fan reading this to join me as Rockies fans. Get the disappointment over with by mid-April, and you still get to root against the Padres
The Blue Jays are among the clubs with interest in Rockies INF Ryan McMahon, but a source with knowledge of the Rockies’ plans says it is highly unlikely he will be available at this year’s trade deadline.
McMahon, a probable All-Star selection for the last-place Rockies, is
As a kid it’s “my dad can beat up your dad!”
As an adult it’s “my favorite basketball player and his brothers can beat up your favorite basketball player and his brother!”
The Rockies can’t just lose like a normal team. They have to drain years away from your life with 60-pitch innings like Count Rugen in The Princess Bride
"but Todd Helton didn't reach 3000 hits"
Tony Gwynn: 3141 hits, 3955 times on base, 4259 total bases
Todd Helton: 2519 hits, 3911 times on base, 4292 total bases
“Larry Walker doesn’t have enough hits”
Ichiro Suzuki: 3089 hits, 3994 total bases
Larry Walker: 2160 hits, 3904 total bases
❗️HIT QUANTITY IS A TERRIBLE MEASURE OF HOF WORTHINESS❗️
Let’s just get this out of the way: the Rockies will now either…
1) not sign any significant free agents because “we did not have time to appropriately engage in the process”
Or
2) give some guy like Kole Calhoun a 5 year $110M deal
There is no middle ground.
Lots of reasons to feel underwhelmed by the Rockies, but their 22-year-old shortstop having a team-leading 18 HR this early into his career is not one of them. (Bonus: 12 of the 18 have come on the road, and 21 of his career 34)
Other people Nolan Arenado should be mad at:
1. Ian Desmond
2. Wade Davis
3. Bryan Shaw
4. Daniel Murphy
5. Jake McGee
They have more to do with the Rockies stagnant offseason than Jeff Bridich.
Mid-market teams have to get good performances from their highest-paid players.
Wade Davis joins Jake McGee, Bryan Shaw, Mike Dunn, and Jason Motte as free agent relief pitchers signed by Jeff Bridich who were cut before finishing out their contracts.
That’s disastrous.
When mentioning Nolan Arenado in a national column be sure to point out the .300 point disparity in his home/road splits (Coors!) but do NOT, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES, point out Aaron Judge’s .500 point gap
The Rockies current strategy of trying to get the 2021 band back together would be a good one if it weren't for the facts that:
1) two of the best players in the band will not be returning
2) the band was not good
Every year my favorite baseball team does some kind of fun “we’re not dead yet!” gimmick but they wait until they’re like 20 games out of playoff contention to do it. But viva las cucarachas!
THE COLORADO ROCKIES ARE BEHAVING LIKE A REAL BASEBALL TEAM
I’m probably getting caught up in the moment here but this (combined with actually trading guys in July) feels like the most significant Rockies transaction in 3 years
Remember when the 2018 Rockies tied the 2018 Dodgers for the NL West lead and then lost it in a tiebreaker game?
Anyway, 2018 was the worst season the Dodgers have had over the past 10 years and best season the Rockies have had in that same time frame
I have it on good authority that the Denver Broncos are going to acquire Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, & Deshaun Watson, AND are expected to draft Justin Fields and Trey Lance tonight. Stay tuned.
My idea is for the Rockies two have 2 distinct squads, a road team and a Coors team. The road team is never allowed to ascend above 1,000 feet in elevation. The Coors team is never allowed to leave the 303. Neither squad can speak to each other til after they win the World Series
Ready for this? Players who were *drafted & signed* between 2000-2015 by NL West teams to have appeared in MLB:
Rockies: 90
Dodgers: 95
Diamondbacks: 103
Padres: 113
Giants: 114
I'm genuinely curious to see how this stacks up, so I'm looking into it. One caveat: I've got 90 players drafted by Colorado between 2000-2015 that appeared in MLB, not 127. Maybe because I'm not counting guys who weren't signed, like Chris Sale, Todd Frazier or Dansby Swanson.
The Rockies have had some obvious trade candidates over the years that they inexplicably held on to.
None of them, ever, in all of Rockies history, has been so obvious a candidate as Elias Díaz is right now.
If they don’t trade him, I will angry tweet this team into oblivion.
Drew Romo continues to rake, this time securing Albuquerque’s second walk-off win in as many nights.
#Rockies
top catching prospect leads all PCL East catchers with 12 home runs, 49 RBI and a .302 batting average.
It’s easy to look at this and think, “ah, the Rockies lost the trade,” but I would encourage you to keep in mind that they saved themselves $150M in order to pay Kris Bryant to watch Austin Gomber give up grand slams to future Hall of Famers, and you can’t put a price on that.
Albert Pujols vs Austin Gomber

Home Run 💣
Exit velo: 105.1 mph
Launch angle: 22 deg
Proj. distance: 374 ft
This would have been a home run in 28/30 MLB ballparks
COL (0) @ STL (10)
🔻 3rd
DJ LeMahieu road OPS, by year
2013 (CR): .567
2014 (CR): .536
2015 (CR): .694
2016 (CR): .747
2017 (CR): .753
2018 (CR): .698
2019 (NYY): .845
This seems to be strong evidence in support of a "Coors hangover" that Rockies hitters have to deal with.
5 reasons to believe that Eric Hosmer will be a Colorado Rockie by this time next week:
🤔CJ Cron is injured
🤔Bud Black loves his veterans
🤔Hosmer is a groundball KING
🤔Rockies love groundballs
🤔This would make no sense for the Rockies
@OakTreeStatus
@TridentDeck
Julio Rodriguez is a generational talent. No chance I’m trading him for a pitcher who performs better at Coors than anywhere else
Connor Joe is on pace for 224 runs scored this season. If it were anyone else I would call that unsustainable, but seeing as it’s the greatest baseball player of all time I’d say he’s got a real shot at it
If the MLB can have lockouts then they also should be required to do lock-INs, in which the players have Moon Pie eating contests, play chubby bunny with marshmallows, watch old 90s comedy movies, play 007 Goldeneye tournaments on the N64, and sleep on the floor.
I had to put my sweet Handsome Roo Baby down today, my first child, my furry little black man. I sang him the “Ransom Baby” song one more time but I didn’t get the nub wag it used to get. My boy was tired. I cried like a baby on the way home. Ransom In Peace, my best friend. ❤️
What Rockies fans should expect for the rest of 2024:
- Regular playing time for Blackmon, Diaz, Rodgers, & Cave, none of whom will return for 2025
- About a .350 win percentage & a real shot at the 2025 number one overall pick
- MLB debuts of Romo, Lavigne, & Rolison
Alright
#Rockies
fans, the results are in on the 2024 trade deadline.
The Rockies make 2 trades and get 3 pitching prospects. Give us your thoughts on the moves below⬇️
8 games ago: RIP Rockies. I just wanted a competitive series!
5 games ago: I just want a wildcard!
Tonight: I just want that division title!
Next week: I will accept nothing short of a World Series crown
Brenton Doyle is showing why Montero, Toglia, Montes, and Jones should all be getting at bats. You’ve got nothing to lose and potential 2 HR & a double game with great defense to gain. Nothing lost if they don’t work out.
The first baseman I want the Rockies to have:
35 HR, 91 RBI, .268/.348/.551 = .899 OPS
That's Ian Desmond's splits vs. LHP plus Eric Thames' splits vs. RHP.
Thames is a free agent after the year if the Brewers don't pick up his option.
Update:
Ezequiel Tovar has a .793 OPS
Elly De La Cruz has a .789 OPS
Anthony Volpe has a .790 OPS
(wait... is this a 'Tovar is good' tweet or a 'ELDC is overhyped tweet'?)
Hi. You’re wrong.
Baseball reference (via Stathead) actually has a function where you can “neutralize” a player’s stats to any park/year. I picked Fenway 07 since it looks like you’re a BoSox fan. If Helton played all games in Fenway 07:
.303/.399/.515 w 341 HR
@spillygoat19
If the guy played his whole career in any other park he’s a first baseman with <300 HR and an average <.300, and he’s not sniffing the Hall.
And for the record, Helton’s power spike and the timing make him look as guilty as everybody else of dabbling in the juice for awhile.
Connor Joe now has more plate appearances with Colorado than with any of his previous teams, meaning that he will likely be wearing a Rockies cap in Cooperstown
If the Rockies trade Nolan Arenado after:
- one year into a multi-year deal...
- in which the Rockies finished with 71 wins...
- and included an opt-out in the contract...
- which functionally devalues NA & forces Colo to send cash in any deal...
Then the whole FO needs to go
The
#Rockies
haven’t had a day off since September 20th.
They had to win 9 of 10 to tie for the division lead.
In the last 3 days they’ve played in 3 time zones.
To finally advance they had to play 13 innings.
This team, man.
#ROCKTOBER
If cream rises to the top, then sludge sinks to the bottom. It's early in the MLB season, but we already kinda know which clubs kinda stink.
I wrote about the five worst teams in baseball over
@MLBONFOX
If Connor Joe, the Real American Hero DOES NOT GET A REGULAR STARTING JOB for the Colorado Rockies in 2022 then I will JOIN COBRA COMMANDER and wreak havoc on this world.
