When working on night sky advocacy, it’s important to explain your artificial lighting techniques. This pano was shot with illumination to match the intensity of the Milky Way core. That way a single shot can be taken that properly exposes the foreground equally with the stars

M101 - At an estimated 1,000,000,000,000 stars in this galaxy, I can only imaging the complexity here in this 4 hours of 3 minute sub from our Mead 130mm. It is estimated that the light from one end to another of this face on spiral takes over 170,000 years to travel across it.

Looking deep into the core. Shot at the dark skies of Kodachrome Basin State Park. Shot with a Canon EOSR with a 70-200mm L at 85mm. ISO 3200 at f2.8 for 30 seconds. 20 light frames with 10 darks. Tracked on a Celestron AVX.

Over 200,000,000,000 stars pass over @slcCouncil yet they can only see 7 of them. Here from our Dark Sky Park of @AntelopeSP we watch them pass overhead of Salt Lake City’s light dome. They have no idea a type of light fixture can solve this. @AllisonCroghan @KSLcom

It’s awe inspiring to watch someone view the rings of Saturn for the first time through a telescope. Last night, we took 60 folks for a night sky tour at our dark sky park (@AntelopeSP ). Get outside and look up!

In the Muslim community, the end of Ramadan is signaled by the first sign of the new moon. Tonight, we are visiting the campus of University of Michigan Dearborn. The physics department has setup telescopes to help the local Muslims identify the end of 2019 Ramadan.

Out searching for dark sky parks. Devil’s Tower in Wyoming is working hard to become designated. Two nights ago I watched this majestic scene with the moon rising. I captured this image as a car pulled up from behind and to the right with just park lights on.
