Law Prof, 3 sons. Books—N*GGA THEORY: Race, Language, Unequal Justice, and the Law; Negrophobia & Reasonable Racism: The Hidden Costs of Being Black in America
President Folt, rather than apologizing for betraying the trust of our students by subjecting them to violent assaults by the LAPD, lies to cover her unconscionable actions—I was personally present & tweeted live from the start of the protests. Here’s the easily provable truth 🧵
These
@USC
students in Alumni Park right now are Jewish, Muslim, Arab, Black, Latino, White, Queer, Straight and they are kind & caring. They are on the right side of history. And they are MY students. I am here to defend them. Their detractors don’t know or care about them.
Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine visited our
@USC
antiwar pro-Palestine protesters today outside the gate of USC and shared the resistance anthem he used against college administrators in the fight against South African apartheid: FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!!!
This is another brazen lie: I was with students throughout the day and President Folt NEVER attempted to meet with students!
It’s shocking how willing this administration is to outright lie to try to affect public perceptions about their utter incompetence.
President Carol Folt attempted to meet with organizers multiple times, Curran wrote, but they denied. Protesters will have until Sunday to have a more "reasonable response" before the University takes more drastic action, the statement read.
I’m here at the
@USC
protest encampment and the students are being perfectly peaceful, sharing conversations and fellowship. So if President Folt unleashes more LAPD violence workers on these students in the next hour or so, don’t believe her lies about threatening students!?
“The police did not come to help me or my daughter, but I kept screaming,” she said. “When the police finally came, they took me out of the dressing room & left my daughter laying there. I wanted them to help her, but they just left her laying there alone”
This is how Wesleyan’s president has responded to student protesters. Why can’t other administrators clear this low bar of basic decency and care for their students’ peaceful protests?!
Many
@USC
faculty members from across the campus and representing many different schools gathered this afternoon to voice our strong objections to the administration’s decision to impose punitive interim suspensions on student protesters after subjecting them to LAPD violence.
I hope my
@USC
colleagues are paying attention to what courage looks like when it comes to standing up to President Folt and Provost Guzman. We must stop assuming a posture of supine acquiescence in relation to them. They “broke the fundamental link between us and our students.”
So unnecessary—notice how they put the Black Overseer cops at the vanguard of escalating a peaceful protest. Probably Erroll Southers, playing the role of lead Black Overseer, gave the green light for this!
I’m taking a very unpopular position on
#DerekChauvinSentencing
, the same position I take on the appropriate punishment for violent wrongdoers and “moral monsters” in N*gga Theory—namely, we must resist seeking to gratify our retributive urge to maximize their punishment.
It looks like the cops are pulling back: the helicopters have left & squad cars are letting up, so they may have gotten the message that cracking down tonight would just aggravate the public relations disaster they’ve already made for themselves. What a waste of LAPD resources!?
I condemn President Carol Folt and our administrative leaders' decision to invite
@LAPDHQ
in riot gear and armed with batons, pepper spray, tear gas and guns to our campus today in response to a planned peaceful protest by our students. A thread🧵
My dad was given 22-55 years in a state pen for possession and sale of this!? The war on drugs has never been anything other than racist and morally obtuse.
Happy 420 to everyone who recognizes the broken logic of prohibition in general and the racist history of drug prohibition in particular.
My dad got a 22-55 year sentence for possession and sale of weed.
Blaze one for black victims of our racist & endless war on drugs—ashay🙏🏾
So far
@ucla
has not been as heavy-handed as
@USC
cops were right off the bat yesterday morning. If
@UCLA
winds up treating their students with more respect than
@USC
, it’ll be a good reason for prospective students to pick the Bruins over the Trojans—go where you’re respected!
BREAKING: UCLA HAS LAUNCHED THEIR GAZA SOLIDARITY ENCAMPMENT!
A day after USC students were attacked and arrested for setting up an encampment on campus, UCLA SJP has set up on the other side of Los Angeles.
LA GET HERE NOW!! Students need your support!
#FreePalestine
Faculty gathering here at USC to stand in solidarity with our students as
@LAPDHQ
violence workers loom in the offing preparing to descend on peaceful student protesters at the behest of President Folt, Provost Guzman, and LAPD Police Commission President Erroll Southers.
My heart is heavy but my spirits are high as I grieve the loss of the
@USC
students’ encampment but celebrate their courageous & conscientious fight against our complicity in mass graves, collective punishment, forced starvation, & the killing of more than 14,000 children
I’ve been here from early this morning and contrary to what’s being said by the administration, these are students, not “outside agitators” and they were not escalating. The cops have been doing the escalating!
It’s a brazen lie to say “people were assaulted” or “critical academic buildings blocked” by the peaceful students I stood w/ before the administration unleashed riot cops with guns, clubs, cuffs & pepper spray on students. The administration cannot lie its way out of this mess.
So proud of these
@USC
students persisting right now in their protests against their university’s complicity in collective punishment, starvation, and genocide.
This is what my morning work commute turned into today: red and blue lights, multiple police cruisers, a phalanx of cops, and a fucking HELICOPTER because of the assumption that I must have stolen the German sedan (S 63 AMG) I was behind the wheel of. The Black Tax strikes again.
.
@USC
claims their decision to cave in to anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian hate by cancelling Asna Tabassum's valedictorian speech is not about free speech but about safety. Here's why that claim is disingenuous at best, or a flimsy lie.
#LetAsnaSpeak
#AsnaTabassum
|🧵A Thread
So at
@USC
cops decide what speech is allowed?! According to the
@latimes
,
@esouthersHVE
—president of LA’s Board of Police Commissioners, law and order enthusiast and staunch LAPD apologist—“was part of the decision” to cancel valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s commencement speech.
It should sadden but not surprise us that academic leaders who preach to students the importance of the search for truth resort to flagrant lies to save face and rationalize brutalizing peacefully protesting students. Our students see you President Folt and Provost Guzmán.
You know what they call a black man getting a Columbia degree? A nigga. You know what they call one who has already earned said degree? A nigga. You know what they call one like me who’s a chaired professor with Harvard and Berkeley degrees? A nigga.
This happened yesterday at Barnard College. A black Columbia University student was entering the library when he was racially profiled by public safety officers. They took his ID. They pinned him down.
🎥: Caroline Cutlip
Our students see you President Folt. They know the only reason “Alumni Park became unsafe” this week is because you brought in LAPD violence workers to assault peacefully protesting students. As a faculty member I and other faculty members who were there can attest to that.
So rather than retract & apologize for spreading fake news, the
@latimes
opted for this spineless alternative: write a second story that “debunks” the first but w/o mentioning their own dereliction of duty in pushing the first to begin with!? A class act.
My followers know I’m a proud
@USC
booster. But the administration’s deplorable mistreatment of valedictorian
#AsnaTabassum
& of our peacefully protesting students fills me w/ shame. I love our students but the administration cast a blight on the glory of our great school
Peddling junk science that supports false narratives from law enforcement for clicks—the state of mainstream journalism.
@latimes
writers are quick to condemn anti-vaxxers for their gullible acceptance of pseudoscience while being gullible purveyors of the pseudoscience of cops.
4 student reps (3 undergrads & 1 graduate student) & I met with
@USC
President Folt, university General Counsel and Senior VP Beong-Soo Kim, and a student resource officer for 90 min. The students acquitted themselves eloquently, forcefully, & honorably. We meet again tomorrow.
I’m very pleased the
@USC
Academic Senate just gave me the Walter Wolf Award for Defense of Academic Freedom and Faculty Rights. Being recognized by colleagues and peers feels especially rewarding because of their “inside-baseball” appreciation of the inner workings of academia.
.
@USC
professors today marched from Bovard—where President Folt, Provost Guzman, and cop apologist Erroll Southers have their offices—to the gates that journalists are forced to stay outside of. We stand with both wronged valedictorian
#AsnaTabassum
and wronged student protesters
Our students see you President Folt and Provost Guzman. The education you are giving them is no education at all because they are paying close attention not just to what you have said or not said, but to what you have done—to your dossier of failures over the last two weeks.
I’m glad the
@latimes
has published this “For the record” retraction of the phony story law enforcement duped them into making a big story and that other news outlets then picked up and ran with:
Some tenured faculty members at
@BrownUniversity
are being threatened with vague disciplinary action after having visited the encampments. They received this email from the Dean of Faculty. I’ve confirmed at least 2, but there are at least 2 more I am hearing about beyond that.
My mom died by her own hand after my dad was wrongfully imprisoned for 22-55 years, so I think a lot about suicide from a survivor’s perspective. The anger, grief, despair, guilt, and confusion survivors feel can also create mental health challenges.
#WorldSuicidePreventionDay
I deeply respect our terrific
@USC
students demonstrating the courage of their convictions. These videos are from an hour ago, after they were threatened with arrest if they persist.
Our students see you President Folt and Provost Guzmán. Your lies embarrass us and they ought to embarrass you. Why didn’t you join us in Alumni Park and reach out to our students in person before unleashing armed violence workers on them. I looked for you but you never showed up
Peaceful
@USC
protesters uniting in song, knowing LAPD may descend on them again at any moment, yet courageously singing “we are not afraid” and “Palestine will be free”
Bill Maher is a vile, disgusting bigot whose lucrative specialty is “tongue-in-cheek” racism. The last time I watched his show was when he used a punchline to publicly shit on Black women, then wiped his ass with the laughter of his mostly white audience and white guests. Thread
Primary difference between Bill Maher & Tucker Carlson is every single white liberal knows full well Tucker is an enemy of the people. This confusion is what gives Bill a power and reach even Tucker lacks.
Thanks to racist cops & DAs, my family spent many Christmases without my incarcerated dad. So prayers to my brothers doing years in confinement, and to my sisters forced by the system to play mom and dad, bustin’ her ass to scratch out a living and make something out of nothing.
.
@KarenBassLA
is proving to be a fearmongering faux progressive who spouts demonstrably fake crime news to pander to cops & their apologists: The homicide rate in Los Angeles today is 33% of what it was in the early 90s, Congresswoman Bass.
Get your facts straight or SHUT UP!
Karen Bass, early frontrunner for LA mayor, says she'd get tough on crime to address a spike in violence “very reminiscent to me of where the city was in the ’80s and the ’90s”
Our students see you President Folk and Provost Guzmán. Your statement about what happened was based on hearsay b/c you never showed up in person. I was there from the beginning & reported continuously on what I saw firsthand & what I saw contradicts your claims based on hearsay.
Our students see you President Folt and Provost Guzmán. I know that your stated excuses for breaking the fundamental link between students and faculty are lies because I was there and chronicled the protest through pictures and videos from the start. Where were you?
My galleys are here! All you authors out there know what a blast it is to get your galleys (the pre-sale drafts that go reviews & media). The official drop date isn’t until mid-August, but I also like to savor the anticipatory pleasure of galleys.
3 of the 6 cops responsible for sparking the Baltimore uprisings by breaking the back of Freddie Gray were Black. And it was a female cop who wrongfully killed
#DaunteWrIght
. Adding diversity doesn’t change the anti-black bias baked into the logic and DNA of law enforcement.
54% female. 34% African-American. 30% Hispanic. LAPD is leading the way in diversity hiring. Do you have a what it takes to be part of our
@LAPDHQ
team? Check out
@joinlapd
Congrats to the class of 12-20!
Early this morning at 4
a.m., President Folt, for the second time, mobilized DPS and LAPD against her students, despite explicit statements that she would not. This was once again a vile and belligerent abuse of power against students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Two different artists, a painter and a photographer, each standing next to their respective portraits of Nipsey Hussle. These Nipsey portraits perfectly captured the Art & Justice spirit of tonight’s Juneteenth celebration at Umoja in Leimert Part, black L.A.’s cultural hub.
.
@USC
cancels graduation!
Utter incompetence from President Folt, Provost Guzmán, and Vice President Erroll Southers. All this could have been easily avoided by not silencing our Muslim valedictorian,
#AsnaTabassum
, and not unleashing
@LAPDHQ
on peaceful student protesters!?
Again, right now these
@USC
students in Alumni Park are Jewish, Muslim, Arab, Black, Latino, White, Queer, Straight and they are singing a peace song popular in Israeli folk music titled “Salaam” by Mosh Ben-Ari. Those who claim they’re antisemitic don’t know or care about them.
Louder for my well-meaning but mistaken progressive friends and colleagues in the back: Hate speech laws designed to protect the marginalized against the powerful will be twisted and manipulated by the powerful to oppress the marginalized.
After just 3 weeks, my new book—N*gga Theory: Race, Language, Unequal Justice, & the Law—is getting a second printing (which happens when the first printing has already nearly sold out). To mark the occasion, let me share recordings of my last 3 weeks of N*gga Theory book talks.
An example of the reaction I get from a surprising number of people when I go on tv and advocate for deep social change. Some are a lot more vile & threatening than this but my reaction to their threats is always the same: Y’all must be mistaking me for someone who gives a damn.
The crackdown on free speech at
@USC
is about cops & donors. Erroll Southers, a cop to the bone, was elevated to the position of associate senior vice president in the central administration and has had a baleful impact. Donors also undermine our students’ free speech.
Whenever I echo
@avitale
and refer to cops as “violence workers,” I hear some in law enforcement tell me they resent that characterization. But irrespective of their feelings, the facts speak for themselves. We’ve got to get violence workers out of our communities.
Moon over LA tonight feels like a moment of grace as I reflect on how proud I am that Angelenos answered the call on criminal justice reform:
#JackieLaceyWILLGo
, passed Measure J & Prop 17 (restore parolee voting rights) while rejecting retrenchment (Prop 20). It was a good day.
.
@USC
’s craven, shameful treatment of AsnaTabassum by President Folt, Provost Guzman, and Erroll Southers leaves an indelible stain on the reputation of the university and justifies their censure by the Academic Senate.
Remember the cop who put seven bullets in legal gun owner Philando Castile at a Minnesota traffic stop—in front of his girlfriend and her then-four-year-old daughter—claimed a whiff of pot made him fear for his life!?
I always felt a connection with Kobe because we both played Aces Hoops (i.e., we both played basketball for Lower Merion High...in fact, he shattered my old scoring record). In his memory, I’ll be wearing my old Aces Hoops gear for the next several days (including to class!).
Looks like my fancy diplomas & high tax bracket once again failed to shield me from racial profiling. I think it’s time for some good old down home Black Bourgeoisie Blues for all them politics of respectability blacks who claim that police don’t sweat law-abiding “good Negroes.”
A tale of two colleges: Left,
@USC
at 7am yesterday; Right,
@UCLA
right now. So far
@UCLA
cops are keeping their distance vs the immediate heavy-handed intervention of
@usc
cops yesterday morning. It’ll be a real indictment of
@usc
if
@ucla
treats their students with more dignity
Knowing that President Folt, for the second time, was mobilizing belligerent DPS and LAPD violence workers against them, despite explicit statements that she would not, these students sing “we are not afraid” as they brace themselves. Their courage humbles and inspires me.
President Folt 5 years ago: “there has to be a space [for protest], it has to be part of what we do…you want to find out how we can work with people, what are the issues, BUT YOU DON’T TRY TO STOP PROTESTS”
President Folt on Wednesday: Unleash LAPD on peaceful student protesters
When I’m feeling low & letdown by the
@USC
administration, what lifts my spirits and renews my faith in my university is terrific students like these from my 1L criminal law class who joined me today for a post-exams kickback to celebrate the end of their first year of law school
In about 20 minutes
@USC
’s Academic Senate will give me the Walter Wolf Award “For Defense of Academic Freedom” and for “speak[ing] his Social Conscience within Law and Society.” Truly humbling for me on lots of levels.
We must be so principled in our calls for reform that we want them even for our enemies. We must love and protect each other so radically that we don’t allow our feelings for the few to legitimize pain and suffering for the many.
