On the first day of the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival, the prestigious independent cinema event in Park City, Utah, more than 700 filmmakers, artists, curators, and other cultural figures announced a newly formed group in support of Palestine
standing behind Glazer were two people: The Zone of Interest producer James Wilson, who is a long-time collaborator with Glazer, and Soviet-born billionaire Len Blavatnik, who is credited as an executive producer on the film.
Joaquin Phoenix, Elliott Gould, Chloe Fineman and more than 150 other Jewish creatives have signed an open letter in support of Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech.
See the full list here:
Blavatnik has long salivated over the film industry. in 2010 he made a failed bid for MGM. now he runs Access Entertainment which invests in A24. This is why Blavatnik’s name ends up on titles like The Zone of Interest, Love Lies Bleeding, I Saw the TV Glow, and The Iron Claw.

vigil, where we named some martyrs we've lost in the last 105 days. We carry their names in an our hearts and the grief of their loss all across Park City.
Join us tomorrow at 9am by Franz the Bear (same time & same place) for our second vigil!
Glazer touches Wilson’s arm and motions him to come forward. after the speech Glazer reaches out to Wilson again. he doesn’t acknowledge Blavatnik at all. it doesn’t seem like he even knows him.
1500+ and counting…Ken Loach, Mira Nair, Larissa Sansour, Ahmed Malek, Mike Leigh, Aki Kaurismäki, Cherien Dabis, Mohanad Yaqubi, Liam Cunningham, James Schamus, Susan Sarandon & Brian Eno have all had enough of our industry’s silence and complicity with this genocide, have you?

Uplifting a post from let_go_of_the_festival and collectivebahia on Instagram.
What does it say about institutions like
#Sundance
that they’ll remain completely silent about a genocide while partnering and platforming people who justify it?
🧵 (1/3)
Blavatnik also donates heavily to Jewish organizations, including Birthright, the USC Shoah Foundation (founded by Steven Spielberg), and the 92Y, where Pulitzer Prize-winner Viet Thanh Nguyen had an event canceled last fall for voicing support of a ceasefire.
now, who is Len Blavatnik? his name might be familiar from when he stopped funding Harvard (so far $320 mill) over the Claudine Gay scandal last December. or maybe you’ve heard the name at Carnegie Hall ($25 mill), the Tate Modern ($65 mill), Yale ($35 mill), Oxford ($100 mill).
according to the Penske-owned (the ones that fired the Artforum editor for convening a letter in support of ceasefire) Hollywood Reporter, Glazer did not “run his comments by” Blavatnik prior to delivering his remarks. this may be technically true, but—
watch the video closely: Blavatnik is sitting nowhere near Glazer when the award is announced, and appears to come from a completely different section to the stage, where he arrives well after Glazer and Wilson.

As filmmakers and cinema workers, we are told our words and images have power, and that our work can help end injustice. For over 100 days, images of Israel’s genocide in Gaza have flooded our screens, but this has not stopped the continuing atrocities.

“There was goodwill but not enough to straddle the chasm that divided us.”
In Israel, a translator tries to tread the line of empathy. From
@joannachen1
's essay “From the Edges of a Broken World.”
In our capacity as filmmakers, actors, curators, film critics, and other workers essential to the international film industry, we stand for an end to genocide, apartheid, and repression, and we stand for the liberation of all people.
‼️‼️BREAKING: SciencesPo Paris, the top university in France which hosts a dual degree program with Columbia, has just launched a Gaza Solidarity Encampment. This officially marks the spread of the protests to Europe. So incredibly proud of my peers🔥🇵🇸💪
Hunger is killing the children of Gaza!
Each image of a starving child in Gaza is a reminder of the absolute failure of the world's leaders. Humanity is witnessing a profound betrayal.
We recognize the calls made by the Palestine Film Institute to hold international film fests accountable, and in this moment of urgency we echo their call for filmmakers to use their platforms during Q&As, talks, and panels to read statements highlighting the Palestinian struggle
Filmworkers of the world! In just 24 hours, 3,000 of your colleagues have said no to genocide, no to censorship, yes to a free Palestine— and counting…

I transcribed the first ~3 minutes of Mumia Abu-Jamal’s call from prison with the students of the CUNY Gaza solidarity encampment. The imprisoned journalist and former Black Panther has been jailed for over 42 of his 70 years.
Guernica shows its liberal zionist hand. in addition to "these are good booms," there's also the noxious conclusion, where the sad Israeli translator calls up a Gazan poet, who, despite the threat of death and starvation, takes the time to restore her faith in humanity
Israel has reduced another Gaza hospital to a mass grave and U.S. media is burying the story.
Over 400 bodies have been discovered at Nasser Hospital as the IDF’s many atrocities in Khan Younis are only beginning to unfold.
Our industry cannot continue with business as usual. We must do more than watch; we must act with conscience and continue to insist that Palestinian lives are equal to all others. We will not be complicit with anyone who acts otherwise.
Cultural imperialism makes us puke 🤮
What will you do today to disrupt the staid narratives and forces of capital that compromise our institutions & artistry?

Oh Germany🤦🏻♀️Ministry of Culture “clarifying” that the federal commissioner Claudia Roth’s applause at the Berlinale was intended for No Other Land’s Israeli director Yuval Abraham (effectively leaving out the Palestinian co-director Basel Adra, who shared the stage with Abraham)
We expect our shared cultural spaces to promote safety…& yet from Berlin to Los Angeles, our colleagues have been harassed, threatened, doxxed, disciplined, censored and fired for voicing their opposition to a military campaign repeatedly deemed genocidal by human rights experts
We are aware that one day our community will create and champion films documenting this horrific genocide, yet many stay silent now, while we still have the chance to save lives.
we believe that the struggle encompasses a diversity of tactics. working from within and without the institution. immediate response and long game strategy. no one can assess the horizon of risk for another. we each do what we can. solidarity is trust. solidarity is necessary.
Statements are only a start, the bare minimum declaration of intent. Our purpose is to bring folks together to agitate and disrupt in ways that make most sense for them. Through direct action, BDS, strikes, organizational agitation & more— we won't rest until Palestine is free 🇵🇸
