Clint Bowyer has the quote of the Daytona 500 media day so far:
"All I know is that I went to Disney World with 20 people. My God. That [Clash] wreck was nothing compared to the hell I have been through the last two days.”
Not only does Ty Gibbs harden his reputation as an aggressive and reckless driver by wrecking Brandon Jones for the win ... he didn't even have to do that.
If he sits in second place, Joe Gibbs Racing has two cars racing for the title.
Instead, it's just him vs. 3 JRM cars.
“I’m shocked [playing video games] is what you’re doing, Larson.”
“Why, is that an Asian joke?”
……
“I’ll probably get in trouble for that. But I’m Asian, so I can say it."
NASCAR told Bubba Wallace about the noose in his garage. NASCAR made it public. NASCAR called the FBI
Yet Wallace has been alone to defend himself in interviews over the last 24 hours.
Why he needs public support from NASCAR’s leaders more than ever:
Nashville isn't one of the biggest races of the NASCAR season. Yet the first 15 laps of the race have felt like the second-biggest event of the year simply because of the way NBC has treated the broadcast
wait, did Fox not get video of Blaney throwing his HANS at Jones?
How?! That’s the perfect marketing opportunity NASCAR and Fox wanted from this race! And it’s a 1/4-mile track! How do you not get that on video?
Remember when I said yesterday that NASCAR executives fail at being authentic?
Well, here’s Brian France proving my point last night at the Cup Awards banquet. What the hell.
ARCA pole speed: 180.355 MPH
Fastest Cup speed (so far): 177.83 MPH
Fastest Xfinity speed (so far): 173.611
Another weekend where ARCA is the fastest NASCAR series folks what a time to be alive.
Very much enjoying that Charlie Watts spent his entire life as the drummer for The Rolling Stones and apparently doesn’t have a set of drums in his house.
BREAKING: A tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for Covid-19. 6 other tigers and lions at the zoo are also showing symptoms. Believed to have been infected by an asymptomatic zoo worker. All doing well. To my knowledge, this is the first animal to test positive in the U.S.
Just realized there are more planned cautions (3) in tonight’s Coca-Cola 600 to help make the race more compelling than there were actual cautions (2) in today's very compelling Indy 500.
Austin Dillon’s best finish of the year came at Richmond when he finished 6th.
Since then, his average finish has been 22.9. In that same span, Daniel Hemric’s average finish has been 20.8
Two years and two clown show finishes are enough. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is too good for cheap entertainment. NASCAR needs to move the Cup Series back to the oval.
in the wake of the news that Ryan Newman’s injuries aren’t thought to be life-threatening it’s fair to both laud the safety improvements NASCAR has made to walls and cars over the last 20 years and also wonder what other changes can be made to make racing even safer going forward
It's got to be frustrating as a NASCAR fan to see tracks like Texas, Pocono and Michigan go from two races to one partially due to the quality of racing while Phoenix has two dates and the title race because NASCAR spent $200 million on the track and the racing is so very blah
This was an interesting moment on Fox's telecast. It sure looks like Fox showed a replay of AJ Allmendinger's crash framed as a live shot.
Listen to Clint Bowyer call caution before the video feed shows Allmendinger go spinning (and the icon is already yellow on the tracker)
Remarkable that Timmy Hill finished 20th in the Truck points standings and a spot ahead of Hailie Deegan in a truck he owns that doesn't have nearly the resources Deegan's team does
Hill completed 259 more laps, finished every race and had 4 more lead lap finishes than Deegan
didn't see a single lap of the NASCAR race and no idea if Fox covered it or not, but these comments from Jenson Button almost quitting his first Cup race because of the heat in his car are eye-opening
NASCAR teams having Fox pixelate the digital dashboards during race broadcasts is a disservice to fans, especially considering digital dashes have been around for years and haven't been blurred
And besides, teams are smart. State secrets aren't secrets for long in the Cup Series
a $50 parlay on Spencer Boyd to win the Truck race, Bayley Currey to win the Xfinity race and Cody Ware to win the Cup race this weekend would net you a cool .... $250 billion
Mike Joy's defensiveness regarding the Daytona 500 commercial criticism is obnoxious
He's a pro. The commercial criticism was valid whether he agrees with it or not. But being defensive ahead of ad breaks in the races after the 500 isn't the pro way to handle that feedback
Races like tonight where the gap between first and fifth is 13 seconds on a long green flag run in the final stage makes you wonder why NASCAR thought it was such a good idea to cut horsepower and add downforce in the manner it did
The “problem” of spread out cars still exists
If NASCAR did a season-long points format, Kevin Harvick would have clinched the title at Texas.
Instead, he’s not going to finish any higher than fifth.
If you want to be the respected veteran, you can’t also be the guy who wrecks people out of the playoffs because you’re pissed about something relatively minor from a few weeks prior.
There’s absolutely no excuse for darkness to be an issue in this Xfinity race at Talladega.
Red flags happen at Talladega quite frequently because of, ya know, big wrecks.
Starting a race at nearly 4 p.m. at a track without lights on Oct. 2 is asking for a self-inflicted mess.
Fox's 2023 coverage is going out in style by spending the entirety of Denny Hamlin's first pit stop teasing where he will rejoin the track compared to Chase Elliott and then promptly not showing where he rejoined the track in relation to Elliott after the stop
if you somehow needed more proof that Fox's NASCAR coverage has become miserable, here's a video from the grandstands of a truck flipping at a half-mile track that Fox never showed a replay of or even mentioned during its race broadcast
I wrote about 2020 presidential candidate
@AndrewYangVFA
’s campaign position that NCAA athletes should get paid
It turned out to be even more pertinent today with the NCAA’s opposition to a bill in the House that would allow players to get endorsements
Trotter hasn’t gotten nearly the attention that Hailie Deegan did in ARCA/K&N West, but today’s win was her sixth top five in eight ARCA West starts this year and she has an average finish of 4.13 so far
I sound like a broken record, but for every Berry or Ryan Preece or Ross Chastain who jumps into a good car for the first time and wins there are many more drivers with less talent and more funding who get shots in those cars because of that $$.
And that’s a huge NASCAR problem.
