Where can I find a man Who has forgotten words? He is the one I would like to talk to. – Zhuangzi, as translated by Thomas Merton

1/3 Here’s a plea to all of Twitter. If you agree, please retweet, because I think it’s important. If you’re going to leave: 1) Don’t delete your account, because someone else could grab it. 2) Don’t delete your tweets, because they are part of a unique historical snapshot.

It’s been about a month since I went to Mastodon. It’s much better for me. Also, I only follow people I’ve met. Without anyone with an agenda to engage me, my feed takes 3 minutes and all of it enriches my life. Only coming back to ask: why are you still here?

Why I left @twitter or rather why I did not sign up for “extremely hardcore” Twitter 2.0 🧵

legal and moral implications? unconscionable impacts to life and liberty of users and employees? you might get fined or testify before Congress? has this stopped the guy before?

tbh I expect they are going to bumble along with a lot more downtime and the engs will get used to shutting down and restarting services in sequence, with throttled % of users this is usually the last resort and it will become their 1st resort

This is all true, but don’t expect Twitter to just die suddenly There are options – a lot more options! – once you are willing to accept the loss of some sleep, some users, some reliability, some metrics, some reputation, and some of your immortal soul
I've seen a lot of people asking "why does everyone think Twitter is doomed?" As an SRE and sysadmin with 10+ years of industry experience, I wanted to write up a few scenarios that are real threats to the integrity of the bird site over the coming weeks.

The British and American governments are not doing enough to free the writer and activist who is on a hunger strike in an Egyptian prison.

I'm seeing journalists and activists advising each other to delete their DMs. This probably won't help I'd suggest a GDPR request, but I can't find an email address or web form for that ( https://t.co/sMXyr0w4fW doesn't help) @DamoKieran was the privacy officer...until yesterday

Why do we call these “illegal police stations”? If we had any other group enforcing their will with threats of violence or expropriation we’d call it organized crime “Police station” implies more legitimacy than it deserves https://t.co/TsZmhfWYB6

At my engineering school, it was typical to do all-nighters, so I tried the same thing everyone else was doing on team projects when I didn't know any better. The 2nd time I tried it, I noticed that something that should've taken minutes took hours.

This is still the best thing that happened this week. I think this is the original video, with much more detail. https://t.co/tq80yRhYWt

This artwork could not be improved upon, 5 stars
Giant baubles have bounced down the streets of London, disrupting traffic before causing a glittery explosion. High winds swept up the baubles that were part of an art installation by Tom Shannon, supposed to be on display in London's St Giles' Square until Friday.

While centrists pretend nothing happened, a reminder the mayor-elect’s most prominent billionaire supporter is openly funding far-right disinformation. #vanpoli
There was not a single mention of what happened to the drug supply in North America in Vancouver is Dying. The intervention of safe supply is not a response to addiction, but to a drug supply that has fundamentally changed, killing 10x as many people.

Let’s be clear that this is an absolutely unhealthy and toxic way of working as there’s no real reason to do so. This is not a startup running out of money, about to go bankrupt if not for this manic sprint. It’s the worlds richest person doing this because he can. So he does.

Being a technologist in a downturn, in my experience, isn't that bad, if you didn't have crazy high expenses. A person who works in some tech-adjacent way is more fucked. They have acquired real skills but they aren't perennially valuable
