So much rancour in the world yet on Sunday last every participant at this 2 hr Deep Listening event hosted by @oliver_moore & me in Cloughjordan between farmers (mostly dairy) and environmentalists said they learned loads & wanted more connection like this. #BuildingBridges 💚

Despite its appearance as a thriving native forest, what we saw during our mapping of invasive species in West Cork with the @AcresIreland team was unsettling – a mammoth #rhododendron infestation on good peatland. Call in the army @BioDataCentre @NPWSIreland @PeatlandConserv

Chough nest cam: watch this space! @NPWSIreland has installed a livestream camera in a chough box in a barn #westcork Another chough cam is being installed in a cattle shed. They are due to go live soon. Thanks to @AlanMc_23 @BirdWatchIE & Jason Fathers, Wildlife Windows UK.

Overall, our study demonstrates the utility of deforestation models in providing an early warning system to help direct action to parts of the planet that could play a pivotal role in mitigating the effects of global environmental change. #Guyana #biodiversity #conservation

We predicted a 9% loss in forest cover by 2043, driven mainly by mining and settlements. Encouragingly, protected areas proved effective in reducding deforestation probability. Expanding this network in Guyana could slash forest, carbon and habitat losses!

Our #deforestation model integrated past deforestation data and key drivers like infrastructure and land uses. It dynamically updates deforestation patterns in each pixel's vicinity for each projected time-period, building on the results of the previous time-period🌳📊

We applied a spatio-temporally explicit modelling approach to address 4 key objectives: 1. Predict deforestation patterns in Guyana 2. Estimate carbon stock losses 3. Assess the impact on threatened species 4. Inform the design of conservation interventions for Guyana's forests

Guyana boasts some of the most intact and biodiverse tropical rainforests on the planet, covering an area of 215,000 km². However, recently increases in mining activities pose a threat to the country's biodiversity and undermine its green economy goals. Image: @meshach_pierre

Our latest research in Biological Conservation uncovers concerning trends for #Guyana's forests: a potential 9% loss by 2043 without intervention. Mining is a key driver. However a protected area expansion might be a part of the solution! @DICE_Kent https://t.co/QIMA3DW4Il

5. Conclusions Human settlement has a greater impact on bird communities in forests. Finding over 20% of Guyana's native birds in human settlements underscores the potential for diverse urban habitats and wildlife through effective #conservation strategies. #DICECON23 #LandSea

4. Results 6543 birds (172 species) - 21% of Guyana’s total. Greatest impact on bird community composition in #forest. Buildings negatively affect less urban-tolerant birds in #forest. Buildings and greenspace beneficial to many bird species in #savannah. #DICECON23 #LandSea

3. Methods Many early rises with @srcsrupununi, @jessjessfisher & @meshach_pierre collecting bird and habitat data from 6 settlements (3 from each ecoregion) across #Guyana. Then back to the office for community, indicator species and urban tolerance analyses. #DICECON23 #LandSea

2. Aims 1. To explore if human settlements are having a bigger impact on bird communities in #forests or #savannahs? 2. To identify key habitat features for birds with varying urban tolerances (e.g. trees, buildings). #DICECON23 #LandSea
