This is not a new story, but it should not be forgotten.
12 years ago, Yashasvi Jaiswal moved 1,000 miles from his home in rural Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai to try & become a cricketer. He moved by himself. He was 10.
At first he lived with his uncle. But that didn’t last long.
3 years on, and still nobody’s thought to spray something non alcoholic. No-one’s drinking the celebra-bubbles, can it not just be sparkling water or fizzy apple juice, then your teammates don’t have to awkwardly leave?
Now he’s an IPL superstar, one of the most dominant players in Indian domestic cricket, and has two Test hundreds in six Tests. A groundstaff’s hut to all that in a decade - and you really do feel he’s just getting started.
Ground announcer at the

Rishabh Pant:
It is worth nothing, if only in passing, that some non-striking batters have taken to watching the ball all the way out of the bowler’s hand. Maybe it’s to see what they do at release, but in backing up scenarios it’s also a help.
The most obvious example is Virat Kohli:
Deepti Sharma has India’s highest women’s ODI score, and was a big part of the team that got to three major tournament finals in five years and forced the BCCI to launch a women’s IPL .
And her batting as much as anything won India the game today.
Rishabh Pant’s been on-field with a Leicestershire team for all of a session, and this morning he walked in cracking jokes with them like he’d known them his whole life.

He ended up living on the Azad Maidan, in the Muslim United club groundstaff’s tent. His parents asked him to come home, but he wanted to stick it out.
So he did - for 3 years. Aged 11 to 14, in a tent. Jaiswal eventually made an impression on a coach called Jwala Singh.
His uncle lived in Dadar, a northern suburb. The Mumbai commute being what it is, Jaiswal was losing hours each day in travel.
So he started working in a dairy shop in the city, in exchange for living space. But he couldn’t work enough & the shop owner threw him out. He was 11.
Jwala had himself come to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh, so recognised Jaiswal’s struggle. He also saw a talent.
Jwala had Jaiswal move in with him. He eventually became Jaiswal’s legal guardian, and guided his game and his career through the incredibly competitive Mumbai scene.
With a little stability and support, Jaiswal thrived. He blitzed Mumbai’s school & club scene, making his way into the Mumbai U19 side and, eventually, India’s U19s.
He made his senior domestic debut aged 17.
It’s been widely reported that Jaiswal sold pani puri, a street food snack, to survive. Jwala says this is overblown - Jaiswal would sometimes help out the street food vendors, but his focus was cricket.
He did though occasionally end up serving his own teammates.

“Coloured” puts the person’s skin tone and otherness first. “Person of colour” puts their personhood, or if you prefer, humanity, first.
And ‘person of colour’ is a descriptive term determined by people of colour themselves, rather than a slur determined by white colonials.

All sorts of jokes to be made, but one sincere point: Marcus Trescothick spent about 15 years not able to travel outside the UK because of his mental health. Now he's meeting the Dalai Lama in his home. That's pretty cool.
'White-ball killed English Test cricket' is a spectacularly bad take in that it manages to be simultaneously wrong, a wild over-reaction & a cop-out.
Pakistan & New Zealand manage to be capable Test & limited-overs teams at the same time with a fraction of England's resources.
England should go for the 952. You’ll never get a better chance in a live game, perhaps no team ever will.
7 RPO tomorrow gets them there in 64 overs, with a little time to bowl at Pakistan in the gloaming, then you’ve got 3 days to take 20 wickets.

Test cricket isn’t dead just because England aren’t good.
Test cricket isn’t dead just because the Ashes isn’t good.
If Test cricket can’t survive England being bad - which it can, has & will - it had no future anyway.
But Test cricket’s no more dead now than it ever has been.
Bollocks to all this talk of the death of Test cricket. It’s been almost uniformly gripping on-field the world over for the last five years, the main thing holding it back is the unequal distribution of resources across the world game.
Stop talking it down and do something.
Danielle McGahey has on the basis of this ruling had to retire, thus reducing the number of trans women in international cricket by 100%.

The sledging of SuperSport wasn’t a good faith accusation, but:

‘Not being charged with anything’ is not a sufficiently high bar.
How is cricket meant to say its welcoming to women when Joe Clarke, who has never meaningfully apologised for behaviour & attitudes that enabled his friend to rape someone, is given national honours?
There’s an uncomfortable tone of glee in some of the reporting of the IPL bubble breach: “Is that a popping sound I hear?” “Getting what’s coming to them.”
