Headingley never fails to deliver.
Although it won't in 2027. Neither will Old Trafford or Durham.
Ashes cricket should always exist north of Trent Bridge.
We in England will take any dismissal going, the crowd roar, the players laugh at their luck.
But as soon as it goes against us, the crowd boos, everyone else is a cheat, Broad whinges, and it's against the Spirit of Cricket.
Just play by the laws and accept it.
You know when Jonny Bairstow cleverly ran byes to the keeper yesterday to get Jimmy Anderson off strike?
Why were none of the people piping up that insisted the ball was dead as soon as it hit the keepers gloves?
Answer - because it's not 🙂
A man in the Lord's Pavilion for yesterday's Middlesex
#T20Blast
saw Eoin Morgan about to pass with the
#CWC19
trophy.
"Can I touch it," he asked.
"Sure," replied Morgan. "It's as much yours as it is mine."
#classy
Bottom line - the Aussies did nothing wrong. Jonny was dopey. It's in the laws of the game.
If it was Bairstow stumping Smith like that, a lot of you would do a 180-degree turn.
I love cricket,
#Ashes
is wonderful, but the patriotism seems to turn a lot of you a bit bonkers!
Joe Root is not an atrocious captain. He's probably average.
If you're an average skipper with great players you look a great captain.
An average captain of a poor side looks poor.
Joe is the latter.
If that is his last Test as captain he should be thanked, not pilloried.
On the plane home please stick Mark Wood in first class.
Stuart Broad, Jimmy and Jonny B in business.
The rest can go in economy.
Chris Silverwood and Ollie Pope can swim home.
#Ashes
Nathan Lyon: "I have heard comments that I only went out there to get hit in the head but I'm really against that. I have lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head so I think that's a really poor conversation being had, if I'm honest with you."
Adil Rashid is by far the best English spinner of the modern era.
England should have built a Test attack around him rather than mess him around like they did.
He'd have won Tests and taken 400+ Test wickets if they'd looked after him right.
Such a waste. And he can bat.
Cricket should have listened to Micheal Holding in 2018 when he suggested two world Test cricket divisions.
IND, ENG & AUS might spend time in the 2nd tier? But we need to allow the likes of IRE & ZIM more meaningful matches. Otherwise, what is the point of them having Test…
Typical of cricket Twitter that, after crying out for Matt Parkinson, England fans have seen 14 overs and now say he's rubbish.
Give him a chance. It's a day two Lord's track, he was understandably nervous and will bowl better.
It's a step up. Let him take it.
#ENGvsNZ
I'm biased when it comes to Yorkshire players, but it's getting impossible to defend Jonny Bairstow's keeping.
Problem is, it's now affecting his batting. All-rounders thrive when one element is in form and reverse true too. His feet seem set in concrete.
Time for Ben Foakes 🧤
Quite frankly, if you're calling for Joe Root to be dropped to make way for the return of Jonny Bairstow please STEP AWAY FROM YOUR PHONE OR KEYBOARD AND SEEK IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE!!
Wouldn't it be great of the world was run by cricketers and not politicians?
Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohammad Rizwan continue their sixth wicket partnership for Sussex today.

#CountyChampionship
Rob Key just said that the ideal preparation for this
#CWC2023
in India would have been to come out earlier, but they couldn't as there were matches to play in England.
Yet none of this squad played in that pointless series against Ireland.
The defeat and fallout from Lord's has taken us away from the cricket itself.
BEN DUCKETT, after his first 4 Tests, averaged 15.71 and was dropped. In 8 Tests since his recall, he has scored 902 runs at 64.42, including 2 centuries and 5 fifties.
That's some effort 👏
If the ECB had invested 20% of the money they've poured into The Hundred in attracting kids into a revamped county T20 game, we'd be in a better position and they'd have a lot more money in the bank.
Obviously good that the England team make sure Rash and Mo are not drenched in alcohol, but always feels wrong they are sidelined. It feels like othering.
Why do we need alcohol in celebrations at all? Just because we have for years, doesn't mean we should carry on the same way
I've been watching Ben Foakes' keeping really closely in this
#WIvsENG
series.
He is head & shoulders above the Buttlers and Bairstows (and that's not saying they are bad).
Foakes makes difficult look simple. He reaches balls others don't. Exceptional keeper!
Lancs did really well to rally to 25/6 at stumps.
In all seriousness, some of the scores today are pathetic. Anyone would think it was nearly autumn!!
PLAY THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE SUMMER AND NOT HAVE SOME POXY HUNDRED COMP CLOGGING UP ALL OF AUGUST. PLEASE!!!
The best leaders know when it's time to go.
Eoin Morgan is very astute. He's not worth his place as a batter any more and leaves before the clamour gets loud.
He's achieved greatness and leaves England's white ball team the best it's ever been. Well played sir!
Commentating on Ashes today, but then feels like my cricket season goes into hibernation. The summer feels almost over.
The Ashes should be starting around now. I've got zero interest in The Hundred - an unnecessary 4th format that nobody else plays and other countries sneer at.
Why has Dan Lawrence, who starred for Eng Lions in Australia in 2020, not played a single
#Ashes
Test despite the batting failing.
In 6 tour matches he scored 493 runs at an ave of 98.60 and hs of 190.
I thought the Lions was about future planning. Makes zero sense.
I remember interviewing Jonny Bairstow in 2009. Nobody had asked about his dad. I asked if he felt obvious YCCC supporters' affection for him because of David.
He gave a lovely answer adding if he could have half the career he'd be happy.
David would be incredibly proud.
#Mankad
it's skullduggery, sneaky cricket. It's not anti-India, I'd say the same if it was an England bowler doing it. I just think it's wrong.
#ENGvIND
#mankading
This England Test attack is one of the poorest as I've ever seen.
✅️ Wood barely used
➖️ Leach fine, but inconsistent length
➖️ Root ok as a backup
❌️ Rehan has huge potential, but not there yet
❌️ Hartley isn't a Test spinner. I can't see what he's done to be picked.
Once you shrink the county game it will be impossible to get it back
We have got 18 superb counties. They've all achieved, produced England players, and they all have fans that care.
I'm thoroughly depressed by what I've seen today and over 10 years. It's cricketing vandalism.
I blame The Hundred.
We play too much cricket. We don't give red ball equal priority. We devote peak season to a format nobody else plays. We marginalise the County Championship, devalue the Blast and the 50-over comp.
It is that simple. The structure is a mess.
"That's me done," confirms Moeen Ali. "If Stokesy messages me again, I'm going to delete it 🤣
"I really have enjoyed it, and it's great to finish on a high."
3000+ Test runs and 200+ Test wickets. Well played Mo!
I won't watch The Hundred, it's not played anywhere else, it's just a crap effort to rival the IPL (which ain't happening).
I want to watch top level int'l & domestic cricket in August.
Don't give me a 2nd XI Roses match and call it first class - it's not worthy of the history.
How's about this England XI for Lord's?
1. Duckett or Crawley 🤷♀️
2. Brook
3. Pope
4. Root
5. Bairstow
6. Stokes
7. Foakes (wk)
8. Woakes (record at Lord's ridiculous) / Robinson
9. Dawson (Moeen was a mistake)
10. Wood
11. Broad / Anderson (rest and rotate)
You can follow the money in cricket pretty easily.
England out of SA before you could say coronavirus. Didn't go to Pakistan for a flying visit despite no threat.
Every man and his dog is close to, or has, Covid in Australia, but the
#Ashes
must go on.
Andrew Strauss’s proposals set to be rejected. Over 2/3rds of counties set to block moves to cut number of county matches.
Great to see the county support getting vocal and passionate about the county game.
A batting side should not benefit from leg byes.
The whole point of batting is to hit the ball with the bat, not pads. If you score leg byes, it means you've missed the ball, and the bowler has beaten you.
No coincidence that guys picked because they've scored Champo runs have taken best to Test cricket. Burns, Pope, Sibley all know how to bat long.
Others like Northeast and Azad wait in wings.
White ball picks like Buttler and Roy, not so much.
Look after the County Championship!
A lot of people are writing Jimmy Anderson off. Short memories!
You judge greatness on 688 Test wickets @ 26.21, not the first two
#Ashes
Tests where pitches nullified his skills.
In the last three years, he's taken 101 wickets @ 22.37. He has to play.
@waqyounis99
Waqar. I've got a huge amount of respect for you as you know. But that tweet is inflammatory and quite frankly irresponsible.
As soon as Hardik was out India knew chances of a win were gone and protected their NRR.
It's a tournament.
Not everyone is out to get you!
This method of dismissal is wrong. I get it's in the laws, but it's like sneaking up behind someone and pinching a wallet hanging out of their back pocket. Yes, they should be more careful, but it's still sneaky, sly, and totally against what our sport should be
#mankad
I get that it's legal. I get that it's part of the rules. But a tiny piece of my heart breaks seeing this happen at U19s level. I guess this is where the game is going...
Nobody queried the existence of 18 counties when they produced the players to win the 2019 World Cup.
It's not the counties, it is what they are being encouraged to prioritise.
Give a summer long focus on Championship cricket and you're more likely to get Test players. Simple.
Chris Woakes took his 100th home Test wicket at Headingley.
He averages 22.69 as a bowler in England at a Strike-Rate of a wicket every 43.98 balls.
Anderson 432 home wkts, ave 24.15 (51.63 SR).
Broad 392 @ 25.75 (49.95 SR).
Just don't take Woakes overseas!

Am I the only person who got really depressed to see the launch of
#TheHundred
?
Fast food, unhealthy, snack cricket designed with only money in mind and with potential to change county game beyond recognition for all the wrong reasons and in all the wrong ways.
#OpposeThe100
Got to admit, I've absolutely loved this first part of the
#CountyChampionship
season.
Please don't ever let red ball cricket die. Whether at Test or county level. Treasure, preserve and strengthen it.
It is bloody wonderful ❤️ 😍 🏏🦡
Jonathan Agnew gets the Broad & Anderson situation so wrong.
3 Tests to play, 3 caps, a few months closer to retirement, Test wickets to take and a
#WestIndies
that deserves England's full attention & respect.
It's because we know what they can do that they should be selected!
It's finally come. This is the last time we'll see Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson playing together.
We've been lucky enough to witness genuine greatness.
He's going out at the very top. Well played Broady 👏👏👏
The racism in cricket stuff has got me down recently. It's felt like it's all swung back worse than before.
BUT for all the high-profile people (you don't see) trying to silence those outing them or their mates, for all the repulsive views, there are good stories too
#BenStokes
When Sam Billings plays for Kent in the County Championship he's not even the keeper. Ollie Robinson (the other one) wears the gloves.
It's a totally different challenge keeping in white ball than a 5 day Test.
They should never have sent Ben Foakes home.
How come Jos Buttler is playing a charity match at Lord's today, has played IPL and every match for England, but his actual county team haven't seen him for a long time?
Can anyone explain to me why the ECB's Twitter hasn't been really promoting this first round of
#CountyChampionship
matches?
Is the English game only shouting about the white ball?
Even one tweet a day telling people what's on and where...
#CountyCricket2022
This is now getting utterly ridiculous. I'm the first to call anyone out if I think they've done wrong. This is a bunch of cricketers having a beer after an Ashes series. I couldn't care less if they got absolutely hammered and stayed up late. They are adults.
Such a non-story!
Cricket Twitter makes me laugh. All of you defending Ollie Robinson's F-bomb Khawaja send-off today would have a totally different take if it was Virat Kohli telling Joe Root to f*ck off, you f*cking prick 🤷♂️
I don't want anyone doing it. Do you want your kids doing that?
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Ben Stokes retired at the end of this Ashes series. He's nowhere near fit - he winces every time he moves. No sign of any improvement, it seems.
Don't see how it's sustainable longer term.
Today, cricketer Azeem Rafiq met Holocaust survivor Ruth Barnett at the
@JewishMuseumLDN
, a week after his historic antisemitic comments were revealed
When you give the best summer month to The Hundred when the kids are off school and likely the best weather, what do you expect to happen? 🤷♂️
To me, the Tests will always be more important than a 4th domestic format that nobody else plays. They should always take the prime time.
NASSER HUSSAIN: Why we are treating our Test stars like pieces of meat?
The madness of the Ashes schedule means half-fit players are slugging it out at Headingley
@NasserCricket
When decisions are myopically money-based, people lose track of where they left the soul of the sport.
April is an unfit month in which to play this volume of County Championship cricket. Fill August with The Hundred, too many Champo matches are played before trees wear leaves…
I could understand no
#T20Blast
on Sky on Sunday as there were a million other things on.
But what is the excuse every other day?
How many matches did they show last year in comparison to the pathetic offering this summer?
I like Simon Doull's suggestion that we take three or four
#T20Blast
sides across to Amsterdam for a weekend of cricket.
Rotate the sides each season and as a once in a while trip it's an adventure. Terrific ground.
First-Class Counties XI beat the New Zealand tourists by seven wickets.
These county cricketers outside the Test team and not good enough for the
#T20Blast
are bloody awful aren't they KP!?
Ben Compton gets another hundred. He's having an incredible summer. 1,000 red ball runs.
Imagine how good Ramprakash, Hick or even Randall would have been if they'd been given the job security that Zak Crawley has been given.
All three played the majority of their Tests with the Grim Reaper at mid-off.
I'm really trying to stay off KP, but he makes it impossible.
People can have differing views, it's how you express them.
Annie cares passionately about cricket. Like me, she's probably not right about everything. Nobody is.
But this is just downright rude and uncalled for 😡
Zak Crawley has looked better in this series. But that rush of blood is always around the corner.
He's got every shot in the book. He just doesn't always play them to the right balls.
Liam Lingstone hasn't played a red ball match since the 2021 season where he played 6 matches for Lancs, scored 77 runs, ave 11.00.
If I'm Sam Hain, or fifty others, I'd be looking at this selection and thinking 'why the f*ck did I ever bother working hard and having a dream?'

Just had something glorious pointed out to me...
If Tom Abell was made England captain the nation's skippers in football and cricket would be.....
Kane and Abell.
ECB apparently withdrew Joe Root from the last round of County Champ matches. What scope does Root have to say "sod that, Yorkshire needs me"?
Adil Rashid missed 2016 Lord's Champ decider and was villified by all and sundry.
Rash was with his dying Grandma, Rooty was golfing 🤷♂️
I'm trying to avoid watching or talking about The Hundred. It depresses me.
There'll be good games. Not in doubt. I could have told you Smeed and Jack's were talents already though.
It's the damage to all else I love. It's not the cricket, it's the repercussions. That's why 😢
After watching that, my own allegiances aside, why would anybody want to change the County Championship?
Be proud of it. Celebrate it. Love it and encourage others to love it too.
#CountyCricket2022
For those of you telling me there isn't enough talent in the country and 18 counties spreads game too thin
A couple of suggestions
🏏 let's put our efforts into finding kids from beyond public school system
🏏 let's make cricket genuinely inclusive so players of colour thrive
Playing three rounds of County Championship matches at the arse end of September is not good for cricket.
The pitches are poor, players are coming into the most important run after playing nothing but T20.
This is a great competition and it is being treated like horse crap!
There is one thing everyone should take from the injury news today on Jofra Archer.
The man has turned down BBL, now misses the IPL and has bowled through pain to play for England.
Nobody should ever question his desire to play Tests and white ball for England ever again.
The role of county clubs is twofold. They exist to be successful in the county game. And they produce England players.
From the England Test Squad I've seen (announced today), the England selectors aren't paying any attention to runs scored in county cricket.
I'm not that sure this is an upset tbh.
#Afghanistan
have some serious players and
#England
are currently a long way from their best.
You throw everything at The Hundred and make the 50-over format a 2nd team comp - what do we expect!?
#ENGvsAFG
People keep saying Matt Parkinson should tell England to stick it.
Of course he shouldn't.
He's 25. He's spending his winters in Barbados rather than Bolton.
I'd have picked him last winter, but he'll get his chance in the end.
Bugger. I've left the TV on after the Test finished today. Do I now count as a The Hundred stat?
Watched a bit. It's dreadful. Offers nothing any other tournament around the world (or Blast) gives, apart from a migraine-inducing colour scheme.
