Main reason Latin America can't have nice things is because of the United States' military and political interference.
When people tell me “Mexico is too mountainous to have modern infrastructure” … Chongqing literally exists. We just need proper leadership. humans are so capable. We can do anything.

My honest take: I think there is some collective psychosis or something here, and they need this very weird, abhorrently inappropriate humor and dancing and EDM to take the edge off of the existential terror of what they're involved in.
Remixing my reaction to @standupdan because it was making me laugh so hard - I thought you should see how hard I was laughing and maybe you need a laugh from Dan Ahdoot too!

It is significantly more dangerous now to protest Israel, than it ever was to protest our own government in 2003.
NEW: ICE is hunting for Yunseo Chung, a Columbia student who attended pro-Palestine protests. Chung came to the US from Korea with her family at age 7, and was her high school's valedictorian. She's a lawful permanent resident. Here's what we know so far. 🧵

I will stand by this. Happy to be wrong, but I'm confident I'm right. US will make it impossible for Chinese to send a swimming delegation to LA in 2028. They will threaten them with arrest under the table, while suggesting Chinese absence is a tacit admission of cheating.
Racism is still the bedrock of many Westerner's world view. To them, East Asians should stay in their category of sports that requires more techniques than power. Swimming was the last holdout for sports racialist white people.

If you're under 40, get ready for a world where Social Security is eliminated, but you still pay the hefty FICA taxes. But they won't be taxes! They'll be mandatory personal retirement contributions that go directly to BlackRock, which will invest it for you for a 2.5% fee. /.

"Largest strike on earth.". US media: ignores. instead covers the death of a Chinese corgi.
This is India’s farmers’ strike. After over a year of the largest strike on earth, and an estimated 700 deaths, the Indian government has conceded, saying they will repeal the laws the sparked the movement.

"Since you're a CCP agent, you must comply with their demands.". "First, I'm Singaporean-". "Ok whatever.". This is why we're losing allies.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw: ‘If the CCP tells ByteDance to turn over all data that TikTok has collected inside the U.S. … do they have to do so, according to Chinese law?’. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew: ‘Congressman, first, I’m Singaporean.’

Empire is turning on itself. Today, the Dutch said they'll continue to let ASML sell their equipment to China, no fucks given to US threats over the matter. The Western Empire is in total fucking disarray.
Trump held a call with the prime minister of Denmark. Denmark is now "in crisis mode" and "utterly freaked out"

I don't think the Chinese ever took Anglo concern trolling about human rights seriously. But now I think they're pushing back hard on it simply b/c they're tired of wasting precious minutes hearing this drivel. It's not even political it's just about time management.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confronted China's Xi Jinping about alleged human rights violations during a meeting at the Group of 20 summit in Brazil. Chinese officials quickly interrupted and ordered British journalists out of the room

India is having a relatively terrible 20th century b/c they never had a Mao. Yes, economic indicators are improving, development is gaining some traction, but it's mired in intractable social problems inc some gnarly religious politics.
China has a 4000 year old civilization. They had a terrible 20th century thanks to Maoism, but they really are capable. You don’t get to global #1 in manufacturing by accident. Even if (especially if!) you consider them a geopolitical rival, their engineers deserve respect.

Connie Chung forged her national career in the early 90s by pushing a story -- later retracted with an apology -- that Chinese immigrants were spying on behalf of the CCP and had infiltrated our government.
The New York Times invited Connie Chung into a studio with 10 other Connies named after her. When it was her turn, Connie Koh explained she’d picked the name after college. “You’re an iconic person,” she told Ms. Chung, who had grown teary.

This is good imo, seeing more athletes get motivated by Western disdain than to be intimidated or shamed by it. Same with Zheng Qinwen. The more disrespected she is, the more aggressive and dominant she gets.
After winning 100M gold, Pan Zhanle said,. "Those Western competitors snubbed me, so I turned my anger into fulfilling 1.4 bn Chinese's dream". Then, after the 4x100M gold win, he immediately thanked his teammates. Pan's 🎂 wish is for the team to have a bright future.

Good read. Basically, China's real material economy is far larger than the accounting shows, and the Chinese govt seems to be in no rush to correct this. Meanwhile, the US has the opposite problem. Vastly inflated GDP accounting against a languishing real material economy.
@DlonTrusk The numbers are “wrong.”.

DeepSeek stole the tech, only to release it free to the world?. Even more based than if they came up with it themselves.
Sam Altman doesn't deserve $500b of compute. He's the reason we lost to the Chinese. It's all ego for him. Suchir. Annie. Ilya. Mira. Jan. Evan. Daniel. Logan. Leopold. Karpathy. Deepseek didn't do this on their own. They stole the tech while actively delaying American

We're not trying to compete with China, we're trying to stall and maybe even reverse China's economic development through coercive means. Let's not pretend we're even in the ballpark of 'compete'.
“Competing with China is competing with literal slave labor and that’s impossible to compete with. It’s not worth competing with and nobody who has a real sense of what matters in life thinks anything about competing with China. We’ve been hearing this for 30 fucking years.”

Why would China want to be South Korea?.
China's government was offered every opportunity to be a South Korea, celebrating its own culture and traditions while joining efforts to build a better and safer future for its citizens and the world. Instead, it has tragically chosen the destructive path of Russia and Iran.

The South Korean dude took the selfie. The Chinese lady suggested a different angle. The North Korean champs smiled. We can absolutely coexist peacefully in our region without constant interference from the US sowing division between us.

This is the worst take ever b/c it's completely the opposite. China encourages open access technologies, and shares development capital and expertise with its trade partners. It's the Western world that seeks monopoly of trade and capital.
The future is China vs the Internet. On one side, the centralized Sinic superstate. On the other side, the decentralized free world.
