Cafeteria experiments are commonly used to test for foraging preferences in various animal species. Here, for example, a garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) prefers Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) seeds over those of European beech (Fagus sylvatica).

Eurasian jays disperse nuts, such as acorns - but also beechnuts, into managed coniferous monocultures. If only we could let them do their job... #jay #seeddispersal #forest #research

The Anatomy of a Borb. By fluffing up their feathers, they trap tiny pockets of air close to their bodies, which acts as insulation. Helping them regulate their temperature and making them very round.

A meta-analysis uses data from over 100 published studies to assess how prey respond behaviorally to different cues of predation risk, and found that the strength responses to direct and indirect cues varied depending on the environment.. 🦁 https://t.co/LfmXHp9D1x

🌲 #FUNPOTENTIAL (#BiodivClim) shows that enriching beech forests with conifers like Douglas-fir can create a win-win-win for economy, ecology, and ecosystem health. Especially relevant for small forest owners with limited diversification options. 👉

Here’s a hog-nosed shrew rat to brighten your day! Found on Sulawesi Island, this critter feeds on small invertebrates like earthworms and arthropods. In addition to its distinctive flat nose, it also has remarkably long incisors! This species was unknown to science until 2015.

Have you ever seen the Malagasy giant rat? Also known as the jumping rat, this rare Madagascan rodent can grow ~24 in (60 cm) from head to tail. It feeds mostly on fallen fruit, seeds, & tree bark. This critter mates for life. Bonded pairs inhabit complex, underground burrows.

What eats mushrooms 🍄? We are on a quest to find out! @Bertonemyia @UntamedScience il
We @RolandKays set up cameras to monitor what eats mushrooms. Most of the time, we captured snails, slugs, flies, and crickets—along with deer and squirrels, of course. It seems like animals know which mushrooms taste good.
