So we aren’t having a funeral for my nan because we can’t narrow it down to ten people but we can buy a car and go to Primark. Great. That feels right. Thanks
@BorisJohnson
Hi
@Mike_Fabricant
, I am not sure where you got your info from but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Teachers and nurses were most certainly not going to the staffroom at the end of work to meet for a quiet drink. Most staff rooms were out of bounds.
Retraction? We’ll wait.
"I don't think at any time he thought he was breaking the law... he thought just like many teachers and nurses who after a very long shift would go back to the staff room and have a quiet drink"
Tory MP Michael Fabricant urges Boris Johnson to apologise
To the headteachers who have taken the decision to close classes instead of getting any Tom, Dick or Harry to cover striking teachers’ classes tomorrow, thank you for showing support and not undermining the strike.
Well I just had the most wonderful Uber driver 🥰
“Are you a teacher? You look like a science teacher.”
“Do I really look like a science teacher? I’m a primary teacher.”
“A primary teacher! You teach all the subjects. You must be very clever. You do such an important job.”
😭🩷
At 9:15 this morning, my HT told us we’ve got assembly so we all went into the hall. Then, he sent all the teachers, TAs, office staff, kitchen staff and caretaker to the staffroom where he and our DHT had laid on a huge breakfast feast for us. Now I’m going outside for breaktime
If people want to go into school during the holidays, crack on. If people don’t want to go into school during the holidays, that’s fine too.
We don’t need to criticise each other because we have differing preferences. Sometimes twitter gets on my nerves. 🙄

Not too mad 🤷🏻♀️
I was in the bath this morning when the buzzer for my flat went.
“Delivery for Shannine.”
I hadn’t ordered anything.
I took the package bath to the bathroom (I don’t know why 🤣) and opened it up as I got back into the bath.
AND IT WAS THIS!!!! 🥲🥲🥲
Boris says we may need to use ‘tougher measures’ in the coming weeks.
Do. It. Now.
Pull up your big boy pants and be proactive. Stop reacting when it’s too late.
Lock us down and close all the schools. No, it’s not ideal for the education of our children but PEOPLE ARE DYING.
Walking past my DHT’s office...
“This seems like a Shannen thing!”
“Ooh what does?!”
Two minutes later, I’ve agreed to dress up as a giant hippo called Attendance Annie.
I can’t believe I’m actually writing this tweet but something exciting has been happening 😁😁😁
You can preorder it here (words I never thought I’d say!)
@BloomsburyEd
The laptops for PP children always annoys me. Many of our most in need families aren’t PP. They are the ones working as many hours as possible, receiving no benefits, paying private rent and using all their money for food and bills. It’s not just PP children who need support.
One thing I’ve been reminded of this week is that we shouldn’t make negative judgements about the choices parents make.
If they say they need KW provision (and are a KW) then they do.
If they say they need a laptop even when not PP then they do.
Not for me to judge.
So many teachers tweeted about writing reports over half term.
It’s bad enough that schools are still writing such lengthy end of year reports but not giving them any time out of class to do them and expecting them to use holidays, evenings and weekends is just disgraceful.
Yesterday, a tweet pushed me into quite a dark place. Fortunately,
@missdoelteach
is always on hand for me to talk to. We wrote this together.
We shouldn’t be mocked or shamed for talking about our mental health.
Don’t stop talking about it.
I really don’t think it’s right that some teachers who need to move classrooms have to do it in the holidays.
I know it isn’t the case in all schools so don’t jump on me 😂. There are schools that plan the moves into the last week of term.
Why isnt this the case for everyone?
One of my kids came into class this morning with a box that had something wrapped up inside. She handed it to me and it was this notebook and pen! Her mum told me she’d begged in Sainsbury’s to get it for me and was really excited that the pen changes colour 🥲🥰
Whether you believe in dressing up for World Book Day or not, you can’t deny that my two part outfit of the very hungry caterpillar and the beautiful butterfly is super cute.
PS Don’t worry. We read and talked about books too. I’m not a monster!
A woman emailed my HT to tell her that four of our Y5 and 6 boys invited her teenage son with special needs to play football with them on Friday evening in the park and played for hours.
It won’t come as a surprise that I cried a teeny bit when she told us. I love our kids 💙
If you’re the DHT demanding planning in on a Monday morning and then giving colour coded feedback, then you clearly have far too much time on your hands and you should probably go and do something useful that will improve the education of the children in your school.
Eep!! To celebrate the launch of my book I'm giving away 2 copies! Simply retweet this post for a chance to win. Two lucky winners will be chosen and contacted by

So my sister and I were discussing surrogacy and carrying a baby for a friend… and our mum (having had a hysterectomy some years ago) said, “Well of course I would do it for you both but I’m afraid there’s no womb at the inn.”
I love her 😂
A headteacher of one school earning nearly £100,000 a year should not be suggesting that teachers earning significantly less should settle and avoid striking.
Surely there’s only so many times something can be so misunderstood out of context? At what point do we just agree that if it’s going to be ‘misunderstood’ then don’t say it. I just feel frustrated about it all.
Nobody knew that the pandemic would go on for so long.

This really should be standard practice in primary schools. I see no reason why PPA can’t be done at home or off site if teachers want to. I am much more productive when I WFH.
I have had a really crap couple of weeks. Nearly two weeks ago my lovely grumpy uncle died suddenly aged 50 and this afternoon we lost my beautiful nan after a long battle with cancer.
Grateful to everyone who’s been there for me or made me smile (whether you knew or not) ❤️❤️❤️
The ofsted calling on Friday thing is so interesting. I've seen a fair number of tweets calling it out for the workload and wellbeing issue, but my main issue is that those schools get two extra days to prep and that doesn't seem fair 😂
So I was printing something for tomorrow, I have 31 kids but one has been off all week. I’ve squeezed on five per page. I only printed six pages (that’s 30 for those of you in the back).
He’s going to turn up tomorrow, isn’t he?
One of my proudest teaching moments happened last week when a colleague came into my room and saw one of the boys with a pink bow on his head and said, “Why on earth is he wearing that?!” Pretty much the whole class told her off for suggesting boys can’t wear bows
#PrimaryRocks
I’ve turned off replies to give my notifications a break!
Some people might think I shouldn’t have tagged the school, but it’s already out there in the public domain and I think it’s important that we call out worrying practice when we see it.
It might be honest, but it hardly

I know I am

but I watched the first three episodes of the new Educating Greater Manchester series last night and this morning and I was dumbfounded by some of the stuff going on. I know it was in 2018 and the school has changed now but WOW.
A thread.
Sometimes it really creeps me out how we hero worship people on twitter when we don't even know them or what's going on behind closed doors. I see people praising the pants off of some educators and want to scream 'If only you knew what they're really like!' but prob shouldn't.
It is officially one year since I stopped filtering/editing pictures of myself! 💪🏼
It sounds ridiculous but I had such an unhealthy relationship with selfies.
Below is an old super filtered photo, the first filter-free photo I took and a couple more recent ones :)
A year ago today, I left my old school. I loved those children but it wasn’t the place for me and fortunately I’d been offered a promotion at another school.
My HT at the time was giving a speech at the Christmas carol concert on the morning of my last day.
This. But also:
• how do I get through the day without a nap?
• how do I retrain my bladder for break and lunch times only?
• how do I manage without a constant supply of snacks?
#thestruggleisreal
AS IF I am on the phone to someone whose HT has sent out compulsory online CPD to do during the summer holidays and they have been asked to hand in the certificates on the first day back!!! Because a pandemic wasn’t stressful enough?! FFS.
After being sworn to secrecy for the last two months, I can now officially tell the world I have been offered a promotion at another school and will be leaving my current school at Christmas! Sad to be leaving the loveliest kids in the world but it’s the right time to go.
We were having this conversation at work yesterday. If the government don’t shut schools a week early to give us two weeks to isolate before Christmas then schools/trusts should educate remotely in the last week. Wellbeing and safety of staff and families should be the priority.
I find it so sad that some have such a negative view of those trying to develop themselves through reading research, edubooks, blogging and podcasts. Looking down on those who want to self-improve and share practice baffles me and could be so damaging for early career teachers.
I have felt a bit down at times about some of the things people said to or about me this weekend because of the tweet below.
But the person who originally messaged me about their school has just messaged again to say they are now not all being asked to come in.
Success 💪🏼
This is utterly embarrassing.
Do the people at the
@Telegraph
really think we give a toss about Kamala’s war paint?
Her make up didn’t get her the job. Stop trivialising women’s achievements and success.
“For many women, especially in the public eye, wearing make-up makes them feel more confident and empowered. They don’t call it ‘war paint’ for nothing”
I’m delighted to hear that I’ve passed my NPQSL (thank you
@Ambition_Inst
), but twice on this holiday I’ve accidentally put both of my legs into one leg hole of my shorts so I’m not entirely sure I should be in charge of anything right now 🤣
I sat on my bed with my laptop to make a dent in writing my reports and then I said to myself, “I know, I’ll be hilarious and send my friends a comical photo of me asleep at the laptop with the caption ‘So report writing is going well’”
And then I fell asleep. For half an hour.
Today we’re making a pledge to all parents: if your child falls behind in English or maths, they will get the right support to help them get back on track.
Our new Schools White Paper will raise standards and attainment for pupils.
Here are some of the key things to know:
Is it just
@waitrose
that are letting teachers in during the keyworker shopping hour? Food shopping is so hard when I’m on rota to be at school during the day!
@Tesco
@sainsburys
@marksandspencer
would be lovely to know if/when teachers are allowed in!
How many times can one headteacher get away with saying something nasty and personal about another teacher on social media?
It’ll be another apology, deleting the tweet, thanking people for calling him out and then everyone will go back to worshipping him.
Too far for me now.
I wish other people would stop trying to dictate how we spend our own free time. If I want to work at break times, in the evening or at the weekend then let me. I don’t know any school leaders who expect this. Even if you think it’s a mistake, it is my mistake to make.
And just because we have the benefit of hindsight now doesn’t mean we should start picking apart what schools did in Lockdown 1.0.
The government can look at what they did and didn’t do, and said and didn’t say, and directed and didn’t direct, and they can learn from it.

Everyone seems to be completely exhausted this term. I’m finding myself sleeping earlier and feeling wiped out at the weekends. I’ve been doing some thinking about why.
Many of us were very locked down to our own class bubbles last year. We had far less external pressure.
This is just so wonderful. I know it doesn’t suddenly mean teachers are valued and I’m sure the teacher bashing won’t stop but it’s nice to be recognised by
@Morrisons

All of us at Morrisons would like to say thank you to the nation's school teachers. We're offering a 10% discount on your shopping in store, from this Monday until after Christmas.
Ts&Cs apply. Valid school photo ID required. See for details.
Obviously this is gutting but this team managed to unite us all and gave us something to smile about (and something else to talk about after the last 16 months!) so they ought to be proud of what they’ve done.
World Cup next year 👀

Our trust has made the decision to close next Friday.
Many of our children rely on school for two meals a day and after hearing the decision we made a choice as staff to buy the supplies for packed lunches for Friday to be sent home on Thursday.
I feel so proud of our team.
