Finally, Labour have said: #FoodSecurityisNationalSecurity which means the above needs to be resolved. Either by scrapping it or raising the threshold. Finally, @PJTheEconomist @DanNeidle I’m a tenant farmer so nothing to gain. But v happy to take you on farm visits 😊.

So if the governments aim was to stop people outside farming buying up land to avoid tax. Why has Treasury not proposed limiting #BusinessAssetRolloverRelief to those actually farming? @hmtreasury advice to Ministers seems very misleading?.

Firstly, many large landowners have set up trusts. Treasury figures don’t align with Defra because Treasury have incorporated lifestyle farmers with small acreage (nice house and few pony paddocks) - which gives you the 73% - we must see @hmtreasury methodology.

A short 🧵For years I’ve listened to Treasury economists opining their desk-top view of farming. What Paul & Dan fail to understand is that Labour have stated they want to tax wealthy people buying land as a tax dodge, claiming it’s driving up land prices, keeping youngsters out.
Important context from @DanNeidle So much special pleading and motivated reasoning when favourable tax treatment is reduced. Makes rational reform so hard. And why govts should think very hard before introducing any tax breaks. Once there they are very hard to get rid of.
