They say a picture is worth a 1,000 words & that is certainly true of this one. The FDNY’s Elite Rescue 1 Unit rushes to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. 9 men would board this truck, none would return.
The Yankees aren’t a flawed team, they’re a broken one. They’ll win enough games due to natural talent, but the roster is so deeply imbalanced that outcomes like these vs elite teams seem almost inevitable. If that isn’t enough impetus to fire Brian Cashman, I don’t know what is.
SOURCE: WFAN management has told Joe Benigno & Evan Roberts that they will be taking over the afternoon drive slot. Terms of their new contracts have not been finalized yet.
Mario Lemieux put an entire franchise on his back and won 2 Stanley Cups, got cancer, retired, beat cancer, came back, saved the franchise from bankruptcy and relocation by buying it, won 2 more Stanley Cups as an owner. Need I say more?
If this is indeed Chris Kreider’s last day as a Ranger, I’d like to share perhaps his finest moment as a Blueshirt. Down 1-0 late against the Caps, staring elimination in the face, Kreids blasts a great one timer past Braden Holtby to tie the game & send MSG into a frenzy.
Let’s review what’s happened over the course of 10 months at WFAN:
• September: Craig Carton gets arrested, resigns.
• December: Mike Francesa leaves
• April: Mike Francesa comes back
• July: Joe Benigno gets sued for.....things.
What a time to be Mark Chernoff.

1998-2001 was really the peak:
- Home run chase
- Yankees dynasty
- Piazza traded to Mets
- Peak Pedro Martinez
- Young Kerry Wood
- Peak Braves
- Great marketing
Hasn’t been as good since.
With a week to go in his WFAN career, I got the chance to speak with Mike Francesa in a brief yet interesting interview on his beginnings, career, and what’s next post-WFAN.
My column for
@GothamSN
:
Here’s a stat: In 26 games with Ben McAdoo as HC, the Giants have scored fewer than 24 points in 21 games. They have never scored 30. If that doesn’t tell you something what will?
#GiantsPride
1998 World Series Game 3:
Scott Brosius hits two key home runs, including a go ahead 3-run home run, to help the Yankees to a 5-3 victory, putting them up 3-0 in the series.

Yup. So much toxic dust stemming from building chemicals and abestos. 22 years later and many are still paying the price. Another FDNY firefighter just passed away last night from illness related to that air quality. It’s sad.
May 6, 1994: Led by a superb effort by Patrick Ewing, the Knicks eliminate the Nets from the playoffs with a 102-92 victory in Game 4 in Round 1. Ewing’s stat line in the game:
• 36 Points
• 14 Rebounds
• 5 Blocks

What an emotional roller coaster of a week this has been. On one hand, I of course find myself mourning the passing of my great grandfather but on the other hand I finally have achieved a personal goal I’ve been working towards for years. I got my first car!
For this first

of 2020, we go back to June of 1994. Fresh off their emotional Stanley Cup victory, Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, and Nick Kypreos (
@RealKyper
) bring the Cup to Yankee Stadium! The late legends Bobby Murcer & Phil Rizzuto on commentary.
Brian Cashman for years has prided himself on trying to be the smartest guy in the room. He is not. He’s finally being forced to understand what a frustrated Joe Torre told him years ago: “this game has a heartbeat”.
Honored to have made the

Best Of. Thanks to
@JukemColeman
& Gus for including me & the terrific minifans for your continued kindness to me!
Main takeaways from Francesa’s first show back on WFAN:
• Sounded happier
• Seems refreshed
• Good exchanges w/ the callers
• Sharp and quick in his takes
• Mostly good chats with guests
• Still clueless with social media
• Has no strategy for app
@bigricanman
I never knew him personally but I’ve had the honor of interviewing several of his former colleagues & therefore have learned a lot about him & that is NYPD Detective Claude Richards. A member of the Bomb Squad & 18 year veteran of the NYPD, he was killed on 9/11/01.
PERSONAL NEWS: I’m writing a book. I’ve begun the process of transcribing my NYPD/FDNY interviews and hopefully will soon present a written archive of the many conversations I’ve been blessed to have.
The planned title: Good Folks, Mad City: Life On The Edge in The FDNY & NYPD
“Nelson in Johannesburg, what’s up Nelson?”
“Mike, I’ll get to the Yankee rotation in a second but quick point on aparthei-“
“We’re not doing that today, Al in White Plains ga’ head Al”
Just spoke to Mike Francesa via text and if anyone’s going to break the news of where he goes next, it’s going to be Mike himself. The specific quote he gave me: “I will speak when ready to do so.”
Just finished recording with Joe Benigno and he was the same guy on my show as he is on FAN. Straightforward, self deprecating, and of course, hilarious. Episode drops tomorrow morning!
On this day in 2000: The Yankees signed Mike Mussina to a 6-year $88.5 million dollar contract. 123 victories in a Yankee uniform later, I’d say that deal worked out quite well.
