Next level reconstitution: Combining the malate decarboxylation pathway with transporters (GltP, LacY) in liposomes, Miyer and Zaid generated stable proton and electrical potential gradients and accumulation of glutamate and lactose over periods of hours.

Good things that come to an end… Eleonora did a fantastic job in defending her thesis “Recycling to grow”! Laura and Sebas are writing up their breakthrough work from their postdoctoral fellowships @oLifeFP, and sadly will be leaving us. We will miss you so much!

Something that looks "so last decade”: We studied a mutation that causes disease in the human glutamate transporter EAAT1. in a prokaryotic homologue. We did not have the funds to work on the human proteins themselves…
