I’ve been far too silent about important things lately Direct explicit instruction in math is a nonnegotiable and kids should have strong fluency in math facts Thank you.

Again- around 3rd grade there are key shifts in tier 1, 2 and 3 that currently don't exist that need to. And those shifts are the space I am currently working in.

Building an app on just english morphology, spelling, meaning etc is giving me really key insight into why difficulties persists with dyslexic student DESPITE strong tier 1, tier 2 and/or tier 3. The systems we have rely to heavily on applying rules that don't always apply

After several years of work, my meta-analysis on reading comprehension is finally published. This was no easy task, the full paper is 113 pages long. I have written a very brief summary of our findings here, on my blog. https://t.co/pnO8udxRQn

As “the fun teacher” I strongly support this message (I am fun….. And 95% of the day is content rich rigor)
A teacher reflects on 30 years in education. She once championed "fun, student-centered" progressive reforms that moved away from traditional teaching. After decades in classrooms, she now realizes students learn best with structured routines, clear rules, teacher-led

“That was fun!” Declared the three 5th graders… After spending an hour before school spelling and relearning math Turns out I’m the ultimate trickster I guess

Declaring "the code is simple and the rules are easy to apply!" led us to, well, the mess we are in now.

+Typing the syllable division rules into the code led to chaos. The computer can read the entire word but cannot chunk it appropriately based on "the rules" Why Because the rules are complex and nuanced. Anyway point being teaching reading is extremely complex.

Building an app to give older kids practice w/ gr level multisyllable words There were some that declared merely teaching the code will ensure all kids can decode easily if just tier 1 was solid because "the rules make sense!!" Let me tell y'all. The rules make so little sense+

Would you believe a reading program can score remarkably low on a state’s Supplemental list but very high on the Intervention list—even with the same application and rubric? Tune in to hear The Rest of the Story.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, is sweating state curriculum lists. How did we get here? What can we do about it? Tomorrow night at 7pm EST, @ReadSimplified and I discuss! Join us.

…two of the kids where in my class the year of the robot passage. We laughed all year about it so… kind of tempted to just wing it, not read the passage and see what hilarity ensues tomorrow (This story is a warning against using Ai without careful review)

Since forever I’ve offered free tutoring for kids (I know I know) Anyway starting a new group tomorrow (dyslexic students) and need some fluency passages so… used Ai and now can’t stop laughing because the last time I did this Ai made this ridiculous passage about a robot and…

Ran into a few former students of mine today and they said this… You made everything fun Which makes me giggle bc we DID have fun… but more than that we accomplished very hard things. And we grew. And we excelled. And we learned. And we had fun ❤️

📢More things I have been keeping to myself over the past 3 months . . . Just kidding I talk about this all the time Bring back spelling tests And… Ensure foundational skills are Developmentally appropriate lessons that are not merely decoding worksheets Thank you.

I wrote a very over simplified post about math instruction I hate oversimplifying complex problems so to balance that here’s my deep thoughts on the both/ands of teaching

If I’m mandated to implement a program with fidelity, make sure it’s something I won’t have to battle my conscience to use. Don’t make me choose b/t what my kids need and compliance. The further away you are from the classroom, the easier it is to look the other way.
@rpondiscio @rodjnaquin We have a new Elementary ELA curriculum this year. Of course the first year, it’s “You MUST teach the curriculum “With Fidelity” and no room for common sense. A teacher whispered to me yesterday, “I’m going to add in ______, because the curriculum is missing it.” Experienced

Does teacher centred teaching reduce inequality? Yes according to this study. Explicit instruction is associated with higher mathematics attainment for low SES pupils, while student centred instruction shows no such equity effect. Takeaways: if the goal is to reduce inequality
