Pretty crazy stuff. Stress volatiles trigger root responses, which reprogram the soil microbiome and thereby enhance resistanc of the next plant generation. The study is now out in @NaturePlants . Link in the replies.

Old leaves are good at releasing stress volatiles, young leaves are good at perceiving them. A noteworthy pattern of within-plant volatile signaling. Study led by @lei_plant, now out in @CurrentBiology.
Delighted to share our finding on the plant nose, previously posted on @biorxivpreprint
https://t.co/ESz6Hm7bs7, now in its final form @CurrentBiology

Among the academic institutions that are showing presence on #Mastodon #MastodonScience, @unibern@mastodon.online is one of the first here! From what I learned these two last days, there are many good reasons to be in this space! Follow us!

It's a proof-of-concept in one field, but does feel important. If we let plants pump benzoxazinoids into the soil, the next crop gains 4% in yield, without additional inputs. Now, if such effects compound, and if we can learn to engineer them...

Plants that are exposed to light cues from neighbors respond more strongly to stress volatiles- and then release more volatiles themselves. A booster for plant-plant interactions! Cool discovery by @RocioEscobarBr1 et al., funded by the @VeluxStiftung. https://t.co/3warNwVGPK

Abstract. Herbivore-induced plant volatiles regulate defenses in undamaged neighboring plants. Understanding the mechanisms by which plant volatiles are taken up, perceived, and translated into...

Go lean for discovery and wide for translation.
If we need plot replication in multiple locations for publication, we can never again publish on yield gains (only companies have the money and facilities for this kind of replication). This demand kills public sector research if it became the standard, I am afraid.
