What is going on with people deciding they can drive onto the Lakefront?
As soon as I got to Promontory Point today, I met a car driving toward me.
Then on a quick spin around the Point, I found six other cars on the path & grass.
This isn’t a road!
#SaveThePoint
…from cars!
@PratitiTiyas
And I could be thinking of other weapons, but I believe that these have been framed as somehow better than explosives, because they're putatively more "targeted." It's appalling.
It is beyond inappropriate for
@RitchieTorres
to be talking about Jewish community organizations like this. He's so far out of his lane he's not even on the road anymore.
I'm guessing that some people will say this was inappropriate, shouldn't interrupt the game, etc.
People said similar things when ACT-UP unfurled banners at a ballgame. Today, people are alive because of ACT-UP's work, & no one complains about that game.
So much respect for students who have spent months organizing and pressing, who are spending hours in the street on a hot August day, as the unelected Board of Ed debates what should be a simple question: That police don't belong in schools.
#CopsOutCPS
So the current state of the
#CTUSEIUstrike
seems to be...
Supporting
@CTULocal1
and
@SEIU73
:
-
@chancetherapper
-
@lizzo
-Several Presidential candidates
-A majority of Chicago
Opposing:
-Paul Vallas
-Board of Trade spitters
-Assorted reply guys who don’t live in Chicago
@wusa9
I have deep contempt for these people, but I have no objection to their getting public defender services. That's a basic right.
You should really take down this tweet.
A man with a handful of Vallas lit saw my Brandon palm cards and said, “That’s who I want, Johnson. They stuck me with this.”
A reminder that electioneering can be a way to get by, regardless of what you think of the candidate. But lots of us are out because
#BrandonIsBetter
Fun fact: As more mail-in ballots are counted, Brandon Johnson’s lead over Vallas has grown to almost 25K votes.
And that’s likely to grow even more before all the mail ballots are counted…
The air quality in Chicago makes me think of how climate change drives wildfires.
And how cars contributes to climate change.
And how the IL legislature chose not to boost public transit, but to widen 55.
And what that means for air quality, even after Canadian smoke clears.
Police blocked a delegation of students, teachers, parents, & community from entering City Hall with demands around school covid safety.
Under banners of John Lewis.
If you want to know how city politics work in summer 2020, that scene about covers it.
So
@CTULocal1
offered concessions, and the mayor rejected them and tweeted "We will not relent" in a matter of minutes.
The mayor isn't negotiating. She's not trying to stop the spread of covid. She's not helping the people of Chicago.
Another day of the
#LoriLockout
.
Well, this exploded.
This tweet came from a convo about bosses at draining social work jobs who suggest self-care when people ask for better pay.
Some people seem to read it as somehow gloating. And no. I’ve had these for maybe 5 of my 42 years, and don’t now.
If
@chicagosmayor
refuses to make up days missed during the
#CTUSEIUstrike
, she’ll make it clear that her professed concern to
@CTULocal1
about students being out of the classroom was empty political rhetoric.
I know that it’s probably way too late for
@Brandon4Chicago
to cancel MLL’s ridiculous NASCAR-on-public-streets plan.
But can he mess with it? Like, impose a speed limit, and maybe require that all the cars have googly eyes on the hoods? Make sure this won’t be repeated.
Wow. I got a grant. It's not huge, but it's my first research grant. And it means that people think that my research is solid enough to help fund.
That...may be worth writing on a sticky note to look at if I feel down on myself.
As officials push new measures that they claim will improve safety in Hyde Park, remember that the UCPD:
-Is one of the largest private police forces in the US,
-Is not subject to FOIA, though it has arrest powers,
-Shot a student in the chest when he was in crisis in 2018.
About a year ago that progressives voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, on the promise that they'd get to vote on Build Back Better next. They got played--the 2nd vote never happened.
Don't get fooled again. Sick leave yes, strikebreaking no.
NEW PELOSI DEAR COLLEAGUE — House will vote tomorrow on ratifying the rail deal AND a separate vote on seven days of paid leave.
The paid leave element lines up w what
@SenSanders
wants the senate to consider.
Obviously, this isn't a "hellhole"...but Darren Bailey isn't talking about that.
He means that Chicago is full of people who don't look or pray or live like him, and we disgust and terrify him.
NEW: Pete Buttigieg calls for deficit reduction and claims the mantle of fiscal hawk in the Democratic field, while conceding that it’s “not fashionable in progressive circles.”
He also takes a shot at Bernie Sanders on the cost of Medicare for All.
As Illinois residents, I think that it's worth noting that
@SenatorDurbin
is not only our senior Senator, but the party whip. His role is to keep the caucus unified to pass key legislation.
He has failed miserably in that job.
And when I say a legally binding contract, I mean a *union* contract. They’re not so easy to come by these days, and many employers fight them fiercely. But we need them.
There's a dissertation to be written on Mayor Lightfoot suggesting Uber/Lyft.
School district fail to meet a fundamental obligation? No problem! Let's "partner" with an unregulated, inaccessible, low-paying corporation. Win-win (except for the kids)!
Mayor Lori Lightfoot says her administration is asking Lyft and Uber to help take kids to school after 73 bus drivers quit, supposedly over Chicago Public Schools' vaccine mandate
It'd be a highly unusual move and could cause a whole other set of dilemmas
@KenJennings
"Some unartful and insensitive things"...you could be taking about badly timed fart jokes.
I’d love to see you take actual responsibility for mocking disabled people. This seems more like doing the bare minimum to keep a TV network happy.
The city’s talking about laying off 300 workers but they pour money into overtime to guard a Fifth Third Bank and glare at kids.
This is my neighborhood, but it’s sure not serving me or my neighbors.
It’s a Police State in Hyde Park right now! Black youth are criminalized & surveilled when we just trying to live our lives. We seen CPD 20 deep in CTA buses & shit. Shorties out here starving while CPD got $125 million in OT this summer. They getting millions tonight
#DefundCPD
So, milestones are important, and I hit one today. Plenty more work to do, but I defended my proposal and advanced to candidacy.
Incredibly grateful for my committee and reactor, and for every friend, colleague, and teacher helping me along the way.
When Spiro Agnew resigned as Nixon's VP under a plea deal, the summary of evidence that he'd received kickbacks from a paving contractor was 40 pages long.
Meanwhile, this grifter doesn't even accuse Biden of anything specific, because this accusation is entirely fictional.
Aykroyd also, unlike Musk,
-is funny, and
-did not publicly flout labor law.
And Aykroyd provided Chicago with half of The Blues Brothers. Musk tried to sell us a boondoggle "hyperloop" based on nonexistent technology.
@PDEditorial
I'd guess that you all queued this one up earlier in the day, but you really should have deleted it before it went out.
People in STL and across the country are grateful for Rep Bush's *very effective* work to renew eviction protections.
Cancelling school on short notice and calling it Vaccination Awareness Day--but not setting up vaccination clinics at schools--is some peak Chicago Public Schools nonsense.
Redefine the issue as whether parents are "aware," and then leave them to play vax scavenger hunt.
ComEd is currently selling tabletop HEPA air purifiers for $10 (after a $50 instant rebate).
It's obviously not a systemic solution, but it seems like a deal that folks may want to grab after these past few days.
This summer, the then-CEO of Brave Space Alliance told workers that $19/hour was a "thriving wage," and that paying more would threaten programs.
Today, the board announced that she'd been misdirecting funds.
As usual, the lowest-paid workers were NOT the strain on the budget!
Hyde Park friends: Want a
@Brandon4Chicago
sign?
I’ve got about 50 law signs and a stack of window signs. Some are spoken for; let’s get the rest out ASAP.
The folks at the office said there’d been a stream of sign-getters all day, from across the city. Feels like a movement!
This is amazing.
In 2017, we won 1103-479.
Now, after years of stonewalling, after a full-on revamp of grad programs to try to undermine us, we're even stronger, winning 1696-155.
So grateful for all who worked for this, across so many years.
@RepBillJohnson
Mental health issues make people statistically more likely to be subject to violence, not to commit it.
Drop this scapegoating and focus on the real issue: white supremacists with easy access to guns.
If we have differential mask rules for fully vaxxed people in stores, restaurants, etc, who ends up asking about vaccination status?
The same underpaid workers who have asked people to put on their masks for the past year, and been yelled at, coughed on, and assaulted for it.
I'd hoped that we'd ditched this kind of garbage policy with the last mayor.
The central business district is not a fortress to be protected from the people of Chicago. Stop it.
@chicagosmayor
@CTULocal1
What are you trying to prove?
@CTULocal1
has modified their already-reasonable safety plan. You locked them out, but they're trying to negotiate a safe return.
The science says we're in a huge surge. But you "won't relent" on refusing to address it?
Gift cards in general are cash advances to corporations. They're no-interest loans that sometimes don't even get fully repaid.
And there was an article a few months ago about the HUGE amount Starbucks gets through cards & reloads.
#NoContractNoGiftCards
A friend’s workplace in the Loop is closing during NASCAR because they’re not sure if staff will be able to get there.
Any cost/benefit analysis of this mess needs to include the impact of borking transportation to the city center—all so that ~50,000 people can watch a race.
@paschutz
@chicagosmayor
Why allow a 7-day testing window,
@chicagosmayor
? That's more than double what was allowed for Lollapalooza--which was outdoors and pre-omicron.
And why wait until the new year? Cases are skyrocketing now. The latest daily average is 1776 new cases/day.
@JakeSherman
@SenSanders
Clearly designed to remove any leverage when they vote on paid leave.
Any member of Congress who spares a thought for labor should first vote NO on ratification.
@BlockClubCHI
As a
@BlockClubCHI
subscriber, I'm disappointed to see this group given a puff piece without any mention of their politics.
They've made appearances with Darren Bailey and supported the right-wing attacks on the SAFE-T Act.
My landlord was once so cavalier about evictions that they posted a five-day notice to quit on the wrong door—freaking me out and violating my neighbor’s privacy. Putting people out was casual for them.
For that and so many other reasons, I support good cause eviction.
Wish you could vote in the mayor's race, but registered elsewhere? If you're a US citizen living in Chicago, you can register here and vote in the same day!
This guide, from UChicago law students, has a step-by-step guide. Use it Monday or Tuesday!
“Bail out CPS.” She really uses that term—it’s not a paraphrase.
The mayor of Chicago is using Bruce Rauner-style rhetoric instead of funding school nurses and social workers.
#CTUSEIUstrike
After thousands rallied outside during her budget address, Mayor Lightfoot reiterated that the city would not bail out CPS in order to secure a teachers contract.
@portlandmercury
Wow, hate when gunfire breaks out without any reports, even preliminary ones, of who fired the gun.
Almost like how guns "discharge" on their own when cops are holding them.
JUST IN: Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the city is prepared to deploy between 60 and 300 garbage trucks to protect the city's commercial districts if the election triggers unrest and violence.
@wttw
People of Chicago: We'd like basic health and safety, a robust response to a pandemic, and good schools, run by people we elect.
MLL: Did somebody say CASINO-RESORT??
This child isn't some abstract hypothetical for you to use to show what a calm debater you are, Eric.
For the sake of his loved ones, and for the sake of basic decency, stop it.
Kinda baffled by Chuy Garcia's approach to the mayoral race.
He could have lined up support from unions, grassroots orgs, and progressive elected. But he kept refusing to announce his plans.
All for what? The symbolism of announcing 40 years after Harold Washington?
This Saturday, the Chicago Police media team--not some random officer, but the PR team--referred to police as "troops," before deleting & trying again 15 minutes later.
If a mindset of being at war with the public runs that deep, we need more than some light reforms in 90 days.
Wow, this is an honor. I looked at the list of previous award winners; this puts me in the company of folks I seriously respect and admire.
I'm flattered and grateful.

BREAKING: Less than a week after a Cook County prosecutor said 13-year-old Adam Toledo had a gun in his hand when he was shot, a spokeswoman for the SAO now says that prosecutor "failed to fully inform himself before speaking in court."

@christianaire
There were some who ridiculed CTU for raising issues of affordable housing and homelessness.
But it’s a crisis, and deeply tied to how students do in school. And the unions have now won some progress on it.
Keep it up,

#FairContractNow
@royalpratt
Seems about as relevant as the correlation between the divorce rate in Maine and per capita consumption of margarine.
But hey, thanks for this opportunity to discuss what a spurious correlation is, Mayor!
If we lived in a robust democracy, we could mourn the death of an 87 year old cancer survivor as a painful loss, not the collapse of one of the few remaining ramparts protecting the rights of millions of people.
She also writes:
"That shame [of not understanding crypto] is not for regular people to carry. Speculative financial technologies like these derive a lot of their cultural power from being hard to define. Clear definition is usually a sign that an instrument is well regulated."
Feeling like I may need to rethink going to
@ASAnews
this summer if it means a 5-hour flight (plus waiting around airports) without a mask requirement.
And that feels pretty awful.
@AndrewSolender
Marshall voted to overturn an election two months ago, so I don't particularly care if he rides a purple rhinoceros to the Capitol.
Democracy is more important than scooters.
@royalpratt
I don't know much about Buckner, but if his anti-violence record includes banning ghost guns, while Lightfoot's is focused on chasing kids out of a park...
I can kinda see why she's worried.
With Chicago's curfew over, all protest-related charges over the past week need to be dropped, and anyone still being held (of whom there appeared to be hundreds, as of Friday's Cook County jail numbers) needs to be released right away.
Canvassing yesterday, I spoke to a woman who had already voted, who said, "Paul Vallas messed up my kids' schools. I don't forget that."
Chicago, let's all pledge not to forget what Vallas has done to public schools here and beyond.
#BrandonIsBetter
Don't let Paul Vallas sell Chicago's schools to the highest bidder.
Tomorrow, let's join together and vote for fully funded public schools for all Chicago families.
I've been thrilled to cheer on
@SBWorkersUnited
throughout the past few months, including their successful vote at the store near my apartment.
I signed this pledge to keep following their lead in lending my support. Will you sign too?
When a man breaks into a party leader's home demanding to see her, and beats her 82-year-old spouse with a hammer when she doesn't appear...that sounds like an assassination attempt.
To call it "crime" is to actively obscure that it was an act of right-wing political violence.
If people ask about one of your main campaign promises two years after you were elected, and you see that as an attempt to "dictate" your timeline...maybe elected office really isn't a good match for you.
Today on the elected school board, responding to a
@dgreising
column, Lightfoot said: "That will happen on a timeline that makes sense, not a timeline someone tries to dictate to me."
Wow. These stats are worse than the previous week by almost every measure--including a positivity rate well over 5%.
But masks are now optional in classes. And as if to underscore the laissez faire attitude, they plan to shift UChicago Forward updates from weekly to monthly.
@royalpratt
Ugh, the quotes in the article that show HOW she and her team discussed it...
MLL last November: “We cannot afford any additional hits.”
CPD director of risk management this February: “So much for them [CBS] forgetting about it.”
Sounds like PR was their top concern.
Wow, some Vallas stans are big mad at the idea that there folks looking to make a few bucks aren’t dedicated volunteers for Mr. School Closings.
Maybe recruit in Palos next time.
#BrandonIsBetter
And to those who say "Well isn't it implied that you want police to chase them away?"
No. Infrastructure can go a long way in keeping cars out of pedestrian/bike spaces. A first step would be for
@ChicagoParks
to fix the bollards at the Point entrance.
@culturecanceler
@KapitalHegemony
@MatthewBorus
The underpass has retractable bollards which are supposed to deal with this - keep vehicles out most of the time but allow rare authorized ones in. But unfortunately
@ChicagoParks
doesn't do a good job of keeping the bollards up as a default!
I can be pretty jaded, but I’m honestly still shocked that the city allowed this to happen today.
Respiratory conditions like asthma—which can be exacerbated by contaminants like these—make covid-19 more dangerous.
The aftermath of today’s Crawford coal plant demolition in Little Village. Very concerning considering the impact the
#coronavirus
pandemic has on respiratory health. Video -> (Video: Alejandro Reyes)
Important thread.
Too many kids across Chicago don't have easy access to doctor's offices or pharmacies. But they do go to school.
So set up covid vaccine clinics at every school.
Children ages 5-11 are eligible for the COVID vaccine. A relief for thousands of families.
But our union and our district must work in partnership to get our students vaccinated. We absolutely cannot have a repeat of COVID testing failures.
Let's unpack what this all means...
"These patterns provide one macro answer to the question of what social problem blockchain solves. Blockchain transforms rising wealth inequality from a problem into an opportunity, for those willing to take the risk of investing."

Presumably, it took him some time to put this statement out because Vallas first had to talk with his friend, FOP prez John Catanzara, and assure him that it was only for appearances.
