Hummingbirds: from one far side of the metabolic spectrum to the other. Here's a neat animated vid on hummingbird metabolism and torpor based on a new study from @WelchLab_UTSC. Nice work Erich et al!

Shrews: tiny power engineers. They construct/locate their cell powerhouses (mitos, obv) next to cell structures that require power most. B/c these structures vary among tissues, so too does mito morphology/localization. Great study by @dillon_chung et al.

What a study showing UCP contributions to hypoxia tolerance of mole rats. UCP expression decreases soo rapidly after hypoxia onset! And body temp regulation is not abandoned, just reset to low level right above ambient. Nice work, check it. @TattersallG

Thanks for hosting me @lynnjrothschild et al. at @NASAAmes (and many other places!). Wonderful discussion. Amazing how many angles & perspectives one can approach the same biological system from. Hooray for complex systems!.
