the siege of sarajevo started 32 years ago today. in the 1,425 days of the siege over 1,600 children were killed. the effects of this are still felt today. in the 181 days of israel's latest attack on gaza 14,000 children have been killed. i find this loss incomprehensible.

idk i think it depends on what we consider failure/success. if success is justice/liberation, then it's definitely failing, but in this sense it was failing palestinians long before now. if success is its increased use as a rhetoric, then perhaps it's not failing.

i mean, as an academic, i feel like 'i have to pay rent' stops making sense as a reason to stay quiet about injustice when you watch the cops beat the crap out of your students
Columbia Faculty know a red line has been crossed.
But they have to pay rent in NYC. They know that if they speak up or stand with the students they'll be treated just as harshly.
And that's exactly how the administrators and politicians who sent the cops to do this want it.

as i very much struggle to finish my book proposal, here is a thing i wrote a while back that came out a few weeks ago.
i thought the way i wrote this was really poetic and my sociologist partner read it and said, 'i love how succinct and to the point your writing is.'
First up, Marina Veličković explores ethical challenges of working with trial transcripts including lack of participant consent; impossibility of research reciprocity; potential harm to local communities; and risk to researchers themselves.
