In the future, when Labour activists pressure those of us who vote Lib Dem or Green or for other socially liberal parties to vote Labour because they think they are better than the Tories or Reform (and they will - they always do), remember this guy 👇

Our entire political conversation - under a labour government - has taken a huge shift to the right. We can't let this be normalised. https://t.co/GD2liIu5N5

Incorrect. There are lots of problems with British policing but the end of operational independence would be a disaster. The regulation of individual powers and practises is far more in tune with the protection of civil liberties.

Er, a police state is when the police are in charge without accountability to democratically elected politicians. If you don’t think the govt should control the cops, a police state is what you want. Ofc the police should make decisions about individual cases without political

It shouldn’t shock me but I keep wondering how some of these British right wing commentators can sleep at night as they whitewash and act as apologists for the Israeli Government’s war crimes from the last 2 years.

This tweet encapsulates the shift in the last few years in what some people think it's acceptable to say. This woman was political editor of the Sunday Times and here she is implying black people can't be British. Utterly disgusting

IN the world according to @Keir_Starmer if I grew up in, say, Somalia, I could credibly claim to be Somalian. Could I? Really? I think that would be laughable.

Ok. They’ve pissed me off. I’m back to tell you 3 things about ID cards: 1. Migrants ALREADY HAVE biometric ID cards & govts have been trying to digitise them for years w repeated fuckups & failures causing complete chaos - they don’t work, you do not want that system for you.

Liberal Democrats cannot support mandatory digital IDs. People shouldn't be criminalised just because they don't want to hand over their private data.

❌"I am a Liberal, and I am against this sort of thing", a Liberal Party member told a police man who demanded to see his ID in 1950. Since then, we've seen the British public reject every government attempt to introduce mandatory ID cards. 🆔Meanwhile, Lib Dem leader

In 2005 Blair claimed it would cut ID theft. Now it’s illegal immigration. Whatever the excuse the TB Institute will make millions & its tech clients, billions. What he won’t mention is the ever deepening surveillance society it will create The PM has no mandate for this.

@BigBrotherWatch As a minimum the @LibDems should demand that Labour’s scheme is made optional and if not, in keeping with the party’s longstanding commitment to protecting civil liberties, they should oppose the Government’s plans. @EdwardJDavey @LisaSmartMP @amcarmichaelMP

The privacy & equality risks will be inherent in any scheme but the key is ensuring that any system is OPTIONAL. As @BigBrotherWatch have called for.

In my current work supporting people who have fled war and persecution in Australia, I can see how these groups are often excluded from ID systems. Supporting these systems risks excluding those people as well as the elderly and other groups who are digitally excluded.

Compulsory ID card systems, particularly digital ones, pose risks to privacy and equality (the right to be treated equally under the law) in society. Given the Lib Dems are often accused of not having a clear identity, it would probably be sensible not to abandon liberalism too

🧵🔶 I joined @LibDems 10 years ago. I’ve worked for the party, campaigned for it and stood as a candidate. Turning on civil liberties and losing sight of the principles of promoting a free and open society would undermine the entire purpose of the Lib Dems for me.
