PhD from @CSIR_CCMB,Hyderabad| Interested in microbial ecology| eDNA| Bacterial genomics and evolution
Kolkata, India
Joined January 2021
Rare bacterial taxa played a major role in shaping diversity and were linked to stress-response and xenobiotic pathways, while abundant bacterial taxa were associated with core metabolic functions. Further, bacterial landscape were dominated by habitat specialists.

We sequenced water samples from 40 sites across 23 ecosystems and found geographically distinct bacterial communities dominated by Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria. In two locations, bloom-forming genera like Planktothrix and Microcystis were found to be predominant.

It was a rewarding experience to be part of 19th International Symposium on Microbial Ecology (#ISME19) and to present my work in Cape Town last week. Interacting with new people and knowing about the research happening worldwide, left me with more food for thought!

Environmental DNA or eDNA allows wildlife biologists to monitor various life forms inhabiting a place by detecting their DNA from places like water bodies. As this tool gains momentum, we have started training on the various applications of eDNA. @CSIR_IND

My first research paper is now published in Journal of Molecular Evolution! https://t.co/mDv1lwb8qL Happy reading!
#ResearchatCCMB Cyanobacteria are the major nitrogen fixers and primary producers in aquatic ecosystems & the ultimate source of atmospheric oxygen. But growing them in labs is challenging & studies to understand them in detail are limited. Comes environmental DNA to aid. 1/2

Microbiology must be represented at climate change talks "Microbes are also intimately connected to climate change beyond methane or CO2 production. Yet #microbes [& related words] do not appear in the IPCC Climate Change 2023 Synthesis Report." #climate

My favourite Kolkata souvenir is this Kalighat style painting of a couple taking a selfie by Sonali Chitrakar. Met her & learned about her work at #MishtiHadirKotha, Old Town Hall. Perfect Valentines gift to my husband!

We broke the world record in ancient DNA today! 2-million-year-old DNA from plants and animals were retrieved from geological deposits and show that North Greenland was once home to an open boreal/arctic community incl. mastodon. https://t.co/QUpGZ08Xr3

Microbial 'dark matter': Centuries-old lava caves of Hawaiʻi Island contain thousands of unknown bacterial species
phys.org
The lava caves, lava tubes and geothermal vents on the big island of Hawaiʻi have higher bacterial diversity than scientists expected, reports a new study in Frontiers in Microbiology. These habitats...
