MYTH: We don't have a solution to nuclear's "waste problem" REALITY: Nuclear waste isn't a problem. In fact, it’s the best solution we have to meeting our energy needs while protecting the natural environment! Here's what you need to know:

In summary, nuclear waste: - is solid (not glowing green goo) - is tiny compared to the waste from all other energy technologies - is easily contained - has a perfect safety record Nuclear waste does have a problem, however...

Because uranium is very energy dense, the amount of waste is relatively small. All of the fuel rods ever used by the commercial nuclear industry since the late 1950s could fit on a single football field stacked about 50 feet high.

The best part: when the fuel rods are done in the reactor, over 90% of the potential energy from the uranium is still left in them! That means we can recycle the spent fuel and turn it into new fuel, which is already routinely done in Europe, Russia, and Japan.

Most of the industrial waste we manage never gets less toxic over time. Not in a million years. Not even in a billion. Mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, etc. are all dangerous and remain so forever. In rich countries, this waste is gathered up and stored without fanfare.

Let's start with uniquely dangerous. The main concern associated with spent nuclear fuel – radioactivity – diminishes with time. About 40 years after it's done making power, the heat and radioactivity of the fuel bundle will have fallen by over 99%.

Nuclear waste concerns are overwhelmingly focused on “high-level waste”, which is almost entirely spent nuclear fuel. Nuclear fuel is made up of metal tubes containing small pellets of uranium. These tubes are gathered into bundles for loading and unloading into the reactor.

Rather than being honest and explaining that 1) radiation does not make nuclear waste uniquely dangerous and 2) dry cask storage at the plant is safe, cheap, and has a flawless record, the industry has attempted to offer technical solutions to what is a political problem.

Scientists and engineers abuse public trust when they pretend we must bury nuclear waste deep underground or put it in the middle of a desert. Any "expert" who believes this is, at best, confused about the role of science and engineering in advising public policy.

A lot to unpack here, but worth going through 1. "It's too expensive..." A nuclear plant requires a lot of money up front to build. But given the lifetime of these plants and how much electricity they reliably produce, they generate cheap electricity over long periods of time.

"WHAT ABOUT THE WASTE?" Nuclear energy's got EXCELLENT waste: there's almost none of it, and it announces its presence reliably even w/ cheap detectors. The Dutch have solved it: make the place with the waste HIGHLY ACCESIBLE, CLASSY, and most of all, FUN. @ParisOrtizWines

Many of the largest, wealthiest “environmental” groups care more about closing nuclear plants than they do about reducing emissions. They scream “climate crisis!” as they petition against carbon-free power plants.

Three major environmental groups just filed a motion to stop California from relicensing its last nuclear power plant. The groups say Diablo Canyon, which provides ~10% of the state's electricity, is "unnecessary" for California's energy supply.

In one week, Netflix will release “Meltdown: Three Mile Island”, a four-part documentary about the accident. I've created an issue brief anyone can use, print, share, etc: Communication around the show will be extremely important 🧵

@bozavlado We have good experience dealing with waste that remains toxic for far longer!

Most of the industrial waste we manage never gets less toxic over time. Not in a million years. Not even in a billion. Mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, etc. are all dangerous and remain so forever. In rich countries, this waste is gathered up and stored without fanfare.

“…they put it into a pond until the end of time” That’s cute but not entirely accurate. In the U.S., spent fuel bundles are placed inside concrete and steel casks and placed in rows near the reactors.

This doesn’t get talked about nearly enough! Thanks to the nuclear legislation we championed back in 2021, households are getting an estimated $1 BILLION back over the course of a year. More like “Based-Load Adjustment”

Our nuclear reactors are outperforming the market so much that we get fat discounts off our already-reasonable monthly electricity bills. Meanwhile LA and NYC let scammers kill their local nuclear like a bunch of suckers, making them sitting ducks for weather disasters. Sad!

This has nothing to do with nuclear In this case, Chernobyl is meant to signal “big scary industrial accident!” Author goes on to say “Bhopal is probably a better comparison but it doesn’t hit as hard” Wild that Bhopal doesn’t hit as hard given the massive disparity in deaths

Here's the kicker: turns out that the slag used as an aggregate in the blacktop was naturally high in thorium. Thus, the new road was more radioactive than the material that had been dug up and sent off for long-term burial 🙃 The End.

Day 1 at #COP27 — here to share the good news about nuclear power with the world It’s early, but there’s already incredible energy here. It’s going to be a great week. #NetZeroNeedsNuclear

The energy density of uranium means the amount of waste generated by nuclear power is extremely small compared to other energy sources. @whatisnuclear found U.S. coal plants made ~30 times more waste every single *day* than the US nuclear fleet has made in the past 45 years.

I’m proud to announce this Administration’s support to restart the Palisades Nuclear Plant. Nuclear power is our single largest source of carbon-free electricity. Our support would bring more resilient power to Michiganders while supporting and retaining good-paying union jobs.

2010: the energy crunch is coming SOON and nuclear won’t come online until 2021/22 2022: the energy crisis is happening NOW and nuclear won’t come online fast enough to help Let’s end this cycle now — it’s never too late to build

This is some grim real life dramatic irony: Nick Clegg opposing nuclear power in 2010 because it would only come on-stream by 2021 or 2022.

Gov @JBPritzker ’s veto message reads as if it was cut & pasted from the playbook of the fossil fuel lobby or anti-nuclear @SierraClub . Given his past support for IL’s nuclear, we should consider the possibility that it actually has been. My latest:

Given that scientists who study 100% renewable energy systems are unanimous that it can be done, why do we hear daily on twitter and everywhere else by those who don't study such systems that it can't be done?

Don't forget to turn off the heating when you leave for the break. It matters. A lot. Running a smallish radiator at highest level consumes around 2 kW. During a 2 week holiday that's 340 kWh. With that energy you could power a 2 W lightbulb for almost 20 yrs non-stop!
