Huge congrats to @Karyna_mi for her paper published today in @ScienceMagazine! She found that the hippocampus is really important for a key strategy we use to make decisions called hidden state inference! 🧪 🧠 https://t.co/6RgR5Iu6FL 1/7

The ability to use subjective, latent contextual representations to influence decision-making is crucial for everyday life. The hippocampus is hypothesized to bind together otherwise abstract...

New preprint out! We developed a behavioural platform for the kinematic analysis of skilled whole body behaviour. Very fun collaboration with Christopher Black, Liam Browne and Rob Brownstone.
Ethologically relevant behavioural assay for investigating reach and grasp kinematics during whole-body motor control in mice https://t.co/oHcZ0wnv4X

looking forward to speaking at KCL on thursday!
This week we are excited to welcome @MacAskillAF @ucl who will present a seminar on Thursday. He will be hosted by @NEURekaSeminars, a group of PhD students and post-docs who organise informal and discussion-led events. All welcome, we look forward to seeing you there.

Want to start your own lab at UCL? Then check out this opportunity. I went through the process a few years ago and can only recommend it! A fantastic place to do science, especially because of amazing colleagues and collaborators.
Applications are now open to join our fantastic department @uclbiosciences as a group leader fellow. Come start your independent group at (in our opinion) the best neuroscience department! reach out to @ibianco3 for more info!

Highly recommend @RuedigerSarah lab - asking really exciting and important qs about how we convert sensation to decision making - using all the most fun tech! I did both PhD and postdoc in a new lab - its an amazing environment to do great science with amazing mentorship. apply!!
Join our team! We're investigating how the visual cortex interacts with subcortical structures like the Superior Colliculus and Basal Ganglia to shape sensory processing and behavior in health and neurobehavioral disorders. 🔬👁️ #NeuroscienceJobs #Neuroresearch @uclnpp

My lab @UCL is looking for a experimental #postdoc to join our team. Interested in circuits underlying visually-guided behavior, chronic #Neuropixel recordings, in Vivo 2-photon imaging in head-fixed or freely moving mice #mini2p? Please reach out & RT 🙏 https://t.co/BN9kzu7HEF

@Karyna_mi @ScienceMagazine We are now going to use these findings to investigate how these changes in hippocampal function might lead to the increased risk of mental illness, and how we might go about designing new treatments to help reverse this increased risk in the future 7/7

@Karyna_mi @ScienceMagazine We are excited about this is bc. patients with mental illness inc schizophrenia or depression are often impaired this type of decision making, and have alterations in their hippocampus. We link these - we show that you need the hippocampus for solving these problems! 6/7

@Karyna_mi @ScienceMagazine She also found that the way the hippocampus supports hidden state inference is similar to how it supports spatial navigation and memory – which means we can use decades of beautiful work (a lot from UCL!) studying spatial navigation to help us better understand this process 5/7

@Karyna_mi @ScienceMagazine @Karyna_mi found that the hippocampus is key for this process - mice without a functioning hippocampus couldn’t use hidden state inference anymore. 4/7

@Karyna_mi @ScienceMagazine However, we often notice things: how quickly they respond, short messages, if they’re using emojis. We use these clues to make a guess about how our friend is feeling. e.g. if they reply with one-word answers we will infer they’re feeling sad – this is hidden state inference! 3/7

@Karyna_mi @ScienceMagazine But what is hidden state inference? Imagine you’re texting with a friend. Because you can’t see them in person, you can’t directly tell if they’re happy or sad. This is because their emotions are hidden - you can’t observe happiness or sadness directly through text messages. 2/7
