Weed scientist. Assistant Professor at Cornell. LVC (BSc) UD (MSc) OSU (PhD). Lots of places since then. Overloaded serial stressor. Views are mine she/her
Large boulder the size of a small boulder is completely blocking east-bound lane Highway 145 mm78 at Silverpick Rd. Please use caution and watch for emergency vehicles in the area.

People can choose to be scientifically illiterate disease mongers; people can’t choose the color of their skin. These situations are not equivalent and shame on you for suggesting otherwise.
If you are thinking about food poverty solely from the standpoint of how much food costs and not including proximity to stores, time to purchase ingredients/prepare meals, a place to cook, items to cook with, utilities to provide heat and H2O...you aren’t looking at the whole pic
I’m not going to lie, tweeps. The last 6 months have been pretty hard on me, mentally. Stress from moving, starting a new job, imposter syndrome and an annoying medical ailment are taking their toll. Good vibes, positive energy, etc... would be greatly appreciated, if so inclined
Honestly, if this offends you, you should just unfollow me. I have gay, lesbian and trans friends in agriculture and it is important to me that they feel respected and represented. Many have hid who they are because of bigotry. Can’t handle it, go pound sand.
Me at 26: I don’t know what I want to do.
Me at 36: I think I want to be faculty but I’m afraid that I just don’t know enough to be successful.
Me at 46: I’m going to be an assistant professor in the fall. Let’s do this.
No herbicides, vs POST only vs PRE plus POST. Early season weed control (at planting) can protect crops from competitive interactions, especially under stress conditions. Look at the difference in leaf rolling.
Husband (a post-harvest physiologist): I hate doing a google search for ‘apple’ and ‘apple storage’ all I get are pictures of iPhones.
Me: You should do a google search for ‘weed’ sometime.
Hello, I’m a weed scientist. You may know me from my greatest hits: “No, not THAT type of weed”, “Guys, AMS goes in the tank before glyphosate”, “Spray your weeds while they are small, damn it” and “No, seriously, not THAT type of weed”.
Hello, I’m a TV historian, you might know me from my greatest hits: “Yes, I do know Lucy Worsley”, “Actually, I probably earn less than you do”, and the high tempo banger “No, I can’t bring back Time Team!”
I don’t want to pick on anyone, but it’s not good to assume that everyone, even if they have a large yard or resources, can competently grow food for themselves. Or have the time. Same with cooking…yeah homemade sounds lovely but it assumes A LOT about a person.
Growing food at home isn’t easy or fun for everyone. Not everyone has space to grow food for themselves. I have almost an acre of lawn that I won’t be converting to vegetable production. Not saying it will stay a lawn, but dear lord I don’t have the time to farm.
I work with organic and conventional growers and support them both. Everyone I’ve met is committed to providing people with good, safe food in an environmentally and economically sustainable fashion. Eat how you want to eat. But don’t eat or not eat out of fear.
Finally! Organic corn has arrived at the farmers market. Corn is one of the crops that is most sprayed with herbicides & pesticides, & is often genetically modified. Waiting for it to hit the farmers market is worth it—you’ll know you’re not feeding your family that awful stuff!
The n-word is so profoundly offensive that a euphemism has developed for those occasions when the word itself must be discussed.
The same cannot be said for the term "anti-vax."
Agricultural labor is not unskilled labor. Not only is it hard, it is learned. I’ve met many growers who admit that they don’t have the eye to pick the perfect fruit or harvest the perfect bunch, especially at speed, in a field.
Didn’t grow up on a farm.
Didn’t grow up in close proximity to agriculture.
Did my undergraduate at a liberal arts college (Go

Still made it to where I am. Diverse backgrounds and experiences make the industry stronger.
Hi. I’m Lynn Sosnoskie. I have a PhD and dozens of peer-reviewed publications. I have given 100s of presentations and have been a member of research teams that have been awarded more than $1 million in grants.
I just dialed my own cell phone number.
From my phone.
Lots of pictures out there of trash accumulating in National Parks highlighting the impacts of the shutdown. One less well known concern is that agricultural data isn’t being processed, meaning farmers don’t have all the info needed to decipher market trends
If I am not looking for a way to get a ‘helicopter chainsaw’ written into at least one weed management grant, then I don’t even know why I’m coming in to work. 🤔🤔🤔😉😉😉
STOP talking shit about different weeds
Purslane is EDIBLE
Velvetleaf is a SOURCE OF FIBER
Dandelions can be MADE INTO WINE
Milkweed supports MONARCHS
Palmer amaranth
Dead nettle is a NECTAR SOURCE
STOP talking shit about different US cities
New York is INSPIRING
Los Angeles is ICONIC
Chicago is MAGNIFICENT
DC is HISTORIC
Philadelphia
San Francisco is CUTTING EDGE
Know why I’m interested in weed control technology? Because I 100% believe that we are going to lose far more herbicides than we will gain going forward. Because I believe that reducing our overall herbicide use will allow us to preserve many remaining options…

Stop judging people for how they get their vegetables (bagged, canned, frozen); not everyone has the time, money, skill to buy and prepare fresh/loose fruit and veg. Food shaming just adds unnecessary guilt.
TWITTER: Bagged, chilled supermarket veg is far lower in nutrients!!
TRUTH: The process of bagging & chilling can retain up to x10 the levels of some phytonutrients, by preserving freshness. Not to mention slashing food waste.
Trust science, not scaremongers.
Ran into Wegman’s, returned to my car, got inside and was shocked that there was so much trash (paper, receipts, etc...) on the floor and started to clean it up really annoyed that I let the interior get so bad. How did this happen?!?!
Tweeps...it was not my car.
Just woke up terrified that I’m failing statistics because I haven’t turned any homework in or attended classes.
Tweeps, I’m an assistant professor at Cornell, not a student...
A colleague mentioned an interesting and useful article about Palmer amaranth the I should read.
It is, indeed, both interesting and useful.
Also, I wrote it.
Family/friends asking me how to ‘make their plants grow better’.
Has nobody paid any attention to my career at all? I’m not exactly in the business of keeping plants alive...
Anyone else have dreams of selling everything, cashing out, buying a camper van and disappearing off grid? Just me and my husband?
We won’t do it, but some days I’m just so tired...
As a scientist with an extension appointment, I am literally mandated to engage in social outreach. Is twitter a waste of time? I don’t know, but ask the hundreds of people who have reached out to me with weed science questions...they might say ‘no’.
It may be time to spill the beans - I’m going to be leaving WSU in 2018. I have been offered, and have accepted, a full time, tenure track position in the UCCE system working with agronomic crops. WA has been great, but it is also good to be going back to my adopted home.
Multiple things can be true.
1) experiencing another country’s culture can be very beneficial
2) the means and ability to travel is a privilege that many do not have
3) you can drive for 8 hours and not even have crossed the state line in Texas, California, etc
The average person in the United Kingdom has visited 10 countries. On average, Germans have been to eight, and the average French person has traveled to five. Only 29% of Americans have even been abroad.
Tell me you are at an ag conference without telling me you are at an ag conference.
If you have a white truck, I swear you can drive into any farm in the US unchallenged.
I am never going back to NOT wearing a mask. My eyes are my best feature and the mask really brings the focus to them. No makeup. Sun protection. Air of mystery . Can’t see me gritting my teeth at your inane comment....
