Growing up I was told not to rock the boat. So I got off that one and built my own. Don’t adhere to rules you don’t believe in just because others do.

One thing I’ve found in education is that you’re constantly being surprised. Today an armadillo ran into our office.

Birth parents and adoptive parents are not at war. We all want the best for our children, it’s just complicated.

Contact is a complex topic and deserves more thoughtful coverage. References to children being “taken” doesn’t help anyone and makes this unnecessarily divisive.

I see BBC News has managed to write a piece on letterbox contact in adoption that completely ignores the child’s perspective 🧐

“If [students] choose not to [behave], then they need to be held to account [...] for their actions.” Held to account? They are children returning to school during a pandemic. How about supported? Nurtured? Encouraged? Listened to? 💡

If, like me, you sometimes see a thing on social media, think you'll get to it later and then forget, then here's a gentle reminder about the Adoption Barometer survey to bookmark for whenever 'later' is 🙂

my youngest nephew has just been allowed his own email address so I popped him a cute first email earlier. he's responded like an overworked father trying to draw boundaries with a colleague he doesn't much like. he is eight

Growing up, my Muslim family never celebrated Christmas. This year I am not going home, because pandemic, so my roommates are teaching me how to have my first proper Christmas. I am approaching this with anthropological precision. Here are a few observations.

Trying to find a positive idea: the government nominates a week-long Bank Holiday to make up for this bleak winter. We have carols, mince pies and Die Hard among the daffodils.
