I am a big believer of silver linings and one silver lining of me no longer working for Baltimore City is that I can speak freely on these important topics without fear of political retribution 😇.

BGE is not in the broadband business. They are in the energy business. This is why it is so important that Baltimore City maintain ownership of the Conduit System, and take back full capital improvement authority upon the expiration of controversial BGE deal.

This already exists to a degree, albeit in a smaller form, with an existing fiber ring that connects publicly owned buildings across Baltimore City, providing reliable fast internet. Existing fiber in our Conduit System is what allows our CitiWatch camera network to function.

With our public system, we can install our own fiber with little to no overhead cost. Meaning if we truly decided to think and act boldly, we could pursue building out a public broadband network that would offer the fastest, most affordable, most reliable internet in the US.

One of the reasons why this is so frustrating is because the publicly owned system could be utilized for so much more than just electricity. Our ownership of the system provides us a unique opportunity that virtually no American city has when it comes to broadband access.

The deal essentially gave capital improvement authority to a lessee of a publicly owned asset. None of the other lessees were afforded this privilege. As any company would, BGE will use their capital improvement authority to advance their interests in this deal, not the City’s.

I honestly lol’d reading the quotes from BGE here because they highlight what many of us knew when the controversial conduit deal become public: that it was ultimately a bad deal for Baltimore that contradicted a voter approved ballot initiative designed to prevent privatization.

What a horrible idea. The Ravens just signed a 30 year lease to stay at M&T Bank with facility upgrades actively under construction. For the amount of money Stephen A. Smith makes a year to talk about sports he should know better.

I feel like this is so random. Who is complaining about this? Complete Streets legislation is superior and Greenway Trails is what the City is actively chasing to create lake to lake connection.
