This will backfire, of course. As more and more paranoid people overreact with deadly force to everything around them is violence, anti-gunners will seize more authority to infringe on the self-defense rights of those who aren't. Don't justify murders as "self defense."

Violence is never moral unless it is both defensive and proportionate. Shooting someone in the back as they run away after ringing a doorbell is not defensive, and it for damn sure isn't proportionate. If the witness statement is correct, this was murder.
