When this is all over, remember how landlords behaved - and let's build a society without them.

Hi @SadiqKhan. You often talk about being on the side of renters. Time to step up. #COVID19 threatens many of us with homelessness. We need: 📣Suspension of all rent payments 🚨Emergency protections against eviction Will you help us fight for these? Looking fwd to your reply

but wait - I thought you said all landlords would leave the sector if their profits come down? 🤔 Why would that only happen if rent controls brought them down, and not increased supply? Could it be... that it is a nonsense argument?? Not for me to judge

My favourite contradiction in landlords' arguments against rent controls is this: 1) we shouldn't have rent controls, because if you reduce landlord profits they will all leave the sector 2) and besides, the problem is supply - if we just build more houses then rents will go down

landlords always claim they're hardly making any money but every time i ask to see their costs and what they charge in rent, they act like it's the most insulting question imaginable

Landlords really think you paying *their* mortgage is them doing *you* a favour 🤷♂️

Owning more properties than you need is a choice, renting because you can’t afford to buy is not a choice. This “poor landlords” narrative that’s crept into the housing debate is pathetic, but no surprise when even the news anchors are bloody landlords 😑

This would be meaningless without rent controls, because there’s nothing stopping a landlord raising your rent to a million quid to get you to ‘voluntarily' leave. There’s no meaningful security of tenure without regulations on rents!

A major shake-up of the rental sector in England is intended to give tenants long-term security.

When landlords stop letting houses the houses disappear, this is a well-known fact
"If landlords lose Section 21 there's a risk they'll feel the sector is no longer worth their investment as risk factors will increase....there will be a potential risk to supply which will impact the poorest in society the most" @hmolawyer David Smith of @RLA_News tells @SkyNews

A positive step towards giving private tenants greater security, but still far short of the housing revolution needed to end the current crisis

good morning to everyone except people who think rent controls harm tenants

This is one of the most insidious lies people tell about rent controls. The collapse of the PRS during the time we had rent controls in the UK was, by absolutely any measure you can think of, a good thing and a massive success of public policy.

@HannahAlOthman 7 is high but I regularly get similar letters from children in chronically overcrowded homes- 4 or 5 in 1 bed. Sometimes the kids come to my surgery and tell me their story and it is unbearable. Loads of money for Help to Buy though.
