it's key to remember that this was *actually built*. there is a link from the channel tunnel to the west coast mainline. British Rail invested £140m before it was privatised. the trains were built! but services never ran because operators didn't consider them commercially viable

My take on this: paper tickets have generally fair, passenger-friendly conditions of carriage which were standardised under British Rail many decades ago. but e-tickets have been introduced piecemeal by operators with one-sided rules and they’re a Wild West which needs taming
