I say this as someone who has created things which have failed. If things don't fail, nobody learns how to succeed. Coddling people so you don't hurt their feelings ensures they never grow and get better. Stop padding everything and let people fall.

I'd prefer to hear the author's actual joke and decide for myself if it's funny or not. A translator's job isn't to put their own joke in place of the author's. It is to tell the author's joke to a new audience.
If a line would make a JP player laugh, the EN translation should make an EN player laugh. The devs want to elicit laughter, and chose words to serve that goal. But humor is intertwined with culture, so the words might have to change to reach the goal. That’s localization.
