My latest for ⁦@ForeignPolicy⁩ on why Finland 1944 is more relevant as a warning than as a model for Ukraine

A 1944 armistice that traded land for peace is a poor precedent for ending Russia’s war.

USA uus julgeolekustrateegia kinnitab, et transatlantilised suhted on olemuslikult muutunud ja allianssi kooshoidev ühisosa on jäänud õhukeseks. Eesti välispoliitikal on käes kõige keerulisem aeg peale taasiseseisvumist, kirjutab @KristiRaik.

USA värske julgeolekustrateegia kinnitab, et transatlantilised suhted on olemuslikult muutunud. USA on endiselt asendamatu liitlane, kuid ühisosa, mis allianssi koos hoiab, on jäänud õhukeseks....

An excellent Sunday evening read: @KristiRaik examines how NB8 countries are individually & collectively shifting towards realism in their foreign policy. How is this affecting their traditional attachment to international law & to democratic values? 👉🏼 https://t.co/lf7G7ayXwP…

Ukraine fits naturally as a common focus of Nordic-Baltic cooperation #NB8, as it is where the idealistic aspiration to defend our values meets the pragmatic need to survive, writes @KristiRaik.

Dark trends in European security and the global order require small states in the Nordic-Baltic region to adapt, strike a new balance between realism and idealism, and join forces to defend their interests and values, writes @KristiRaik.

As quoted here, I believe this is the message needed from NATO: we have the capability and political will, we have our plans so that if the Russians make more violations that actually threaten the security of any NATO country then they will be shot down.

Following Poland, Estonia has called on NATO to respond to violations of its national airspace by Russia. Some analysts fear it may take downing a Russian aircraft to discourage future incursions.

I suppose NATO is facing its most serious test ever. Every inch. It can get worse of course, or it can get better. Depending on our response.

An independent Finland was no obstacle to Soviet ambitions elsewhere, argues @KristiRaik. But an independent Ukraine is a severe blow to Russia’s efforts to restore its Soviet-era empire. https://t.co/qSw03CGacP

Finland’s history offers a warning, not a model. @KristiRaik explains how Ukraine differs from Finland – and why trading land for peace is unlikely to bring lasting stability. @ForeignPolicy

Please don’t suggest @TheEconomist that Finland, Ukraine or any other neighbour of Russia can avoid Russian invasion by not being ”anti-Russian”. For sure Finland deserves praise and has lessons to offer but not this. https://t.co/s3pjKH5lWJ
