Palestinians have comparable trauma because of Israel’s ferocious war and ministers’ stated plans. Both societies have to leave their cognitive bubbles, coexist:ending war/occupation,releasing the hostages, disarming Hamas, viable 🇵🇸state can provide framework to give that a chance.
Unfortunately, I’m an outlier on this. I sense that most Israelis are so traumatized from October 7 that they see a TSS as a set up for another attack and this diplomacy as capitulation to terror. I’m sorry to say I wish it had more influence.

Read this 🧵 by the former spox for the Israeli military. Shows that Macron’s diplomatic initiative - with KSA, and now with the way the UK has moved - coupled with rising global popular outrage at the catastrophe of Israel’s making in Gaza, actually have impact.
My take on @EmmanuelMacron’s and now @Keir_Starmer decision to recognize Palestine, a thread. As global condemnation over Gaza reaches new heights, continued condemnation over settler violence, and unprecedented civilian suffering. Israel faces a rare opportunity:.The.

As I said Thursday evening - on how Macron’s Palestine recognition move and its timing was also an attempt to leverage public pressure, to help partners move, including the UK.
Deft move by Macron/diplo team: leveraged 1 card (recognition) to get commitments for day-after since FR can’t deliver ceasefire. Given partners’ bts reluctance, going public now, pressures.-Arabs to deliver stab force, disarming Hamas, reconstruction.-🇬🇧 🇯🇵 🇨🇦 to recognize 🇵🇸.

On the UK dynamics re:recognition of Palestine.
The pressure is too great, from his own MPs, but more importantly from the general public who are demanding the UK do more than simply send aid. Some MPs I have spoken to have tasked their researchers to look at sanctions as the next step. It feels like people have had enough.

This is also a big deal for UK-France relationship and the first time since Trump’s election the UK has made a big public policy choice with a European partner against considerable US pressure.
Hard to overstate how crucial Macron was here. UK “will recognize the State of Palestine” at UNGA. Starmer throws line for US: “unless” Israel “end appalling situation in Gaza and commits to a LT sustainable peace” before Sept (nothing indicates it will).

“Netanyahu to propose to cabinet a plan to annex areas in Gaza Strip in an attempt to keep Smotrich in his govt.:Per plan, Israel will declare that it is giving Hamas a few days to agree to a cease-fire, and if not, will begin annexing areas of the Strip.”.

Repeated public statements that are clear as day from Israeli ministers that are the pillars of Netenyahu’s govt, not some backbench nobodies. And some still choose to deny these intentions. When politicians in power say what they want to do, it’s worth listening to.

💥FinMin Bezalel Smotrich, a racist theocrat, says out loud that the aim is "Jewish settlement in all Gaza… it is closer than ever. It is a realistic work plan." To keep power Netanyahu handed Israel to messianic zealots, for whom dead civilians are a worthy means to an end.

Indeed much for the EU to learn from the way China is handling its dealings with Trump. And EU’s weakness will only beget more weakness in dealings with others, beyond the US. Entirely predictable. But again, China behaves as a real power, the EU doesn’t.

“China did not move an inch,” a senior EU official told @noahbarkin (as per Watching China newsletter this morning). “We expected [Chinese] to offer up some cosmetic concessions but even that didn’t happen.” Another EU official put it this way: “The Chinese have shifted gears.

They’re not PR statements - they were a central policy plank of the 1st von der Leyen commission. You are free to dismiss them as just PR statements, because you don’t take the EU seriously as a power, that just proves the initial statement.

You shld have a chat with von der Leyen who declared the 2019 commission wld be a geopolitical one. And read her latest statements in making the trade deal with Indonesia. Stated ambitions matter. 🤷🏻♀️.
EU never was a geopolitical anything. EU's appeal comes from neither acting like a great power nor a traditional nation state. This is why it has absorbed nationlalistic member states so far. This is why US, CN and Ru all want to dismantle this supra-national construction.

“A more robust approach would have required member states to be united, prepared to absorb pain and to pushback against industry lobbying.” = indeed that’s how an actual geopolitical power would have behaved. Clearly the EU is not that. At least they settled that debate.
The EU's trade agreement with the US -- if implemented as advertised -- is the least bad outcome available to the bloc among the options actually on the table. A more robust approach would have required member states to be united, prepared to absorb pain and to pushback against.

French PM: “von der Leyen-Trump deal: it is a dark day when an alliance of free peoples, that came together to affirm their values and defend their interests, resolves itself to submission”.
Accord Van der Leyen-Trump : c'est un jour sombre que celui où une alliance de peuples libres, rassemblés pour affirmer leurs valeurs et défendre leurs intérêts, se résout à la soumission.
