Some nuance: This guide below is ideal for those who want to do their best to keep records of their abortion experience off of a physical device.
Copies of this data may be kept by the companies and platforms on their servers. Our goal: make them have to get a warrant for it.

People almost never talk about how “lifestyle creep” when you begin to make more money is not so much spending on luxuries, but rather all the life maintenance things you couldn’t tend to before that end up being really expensive, like dental work or car repairs. 💀
“Do you expect people to lie and break the law to save a person’s life?”
Well I’m Jewish, so if I give you an extra 30 seconds to consider that fact, how do you think I would answer that question?
This case out of Nebraska goes to show you that when it comes to abortion surveillance, deleting friends and neighbors who would call the cops on you out of your life is more urgent than deleting say, period tracking apps.
Why I’m writing a horror movie about the deferred maintenance and related emotional baggage previous generations of homeowners leave for young people to fix in one clip. The reality of what lurks in the housing market is stranger (and scarier!) than fiction.
I really have no idea how we get through to (mostly) ER doctors and nurses that they are not obligated to report any miscarriage to the police, no matter what the patient tells you.
Hospitalists turning people in already is and will remain a primary way “post-Roe” manifests.
I can feel the annoyance bubble up in me every time someone talks like justice can be done even if people act only when it’s completely risk-free for them. That kind of fallacy has a body count.
100% of my team has been 100% remote as long as we’ve worked here, and all of us are having trouble concentrating this week. You’re not bad at working from home if all of this has made it hard for you to be productive.
People should be terrified of how many therapists are openly saying on here they think an abortion would count under mandated reporting when there is zero established legal basis for doing so.
Stop guessing because you think it makes you sound like a hero to not call the cops.
It’s a little known fact that tuxedo cats’ coats were not the result of selective breeding by humans, but evolved to help them thrive in their native habitat: the black tie gala. Camouflaged in their formal wear, they feed on a diet of cocktail shrimp, caviar, and canapés.
The oldest eligible adults saw their SNAP benefits drop from $281 to $23 per month, not a typo.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon is about to submit for its largest budget in US history, $842B or about 8x the cost of SNAP. $170B of it will be used just to buy more weapons.
In the two months since Biden ended SNAP emergency allotments, an additional 1.3 million people reported not having enough to eat (per Census data).
Total food insecure population among US adults is now 25.4 million.
Don’t reply guy me with that shit anymore, asking if I’m expecting people to lie and risk their jobs to ex: keep pregnant people safe.
Everyone is capable of making their own decisions, and the civil society you expect isn’t possible without many people deciding to take risks.
The Jane Collective used a different apartment and a different car every single week, and also blindfolded people when driving them between the front and the place where abortions happened.
They did not give press interviews and do photoshoots.
When you hate Palestinians more than you love Torah, a document which is exceptionally clear on where it stands re: how forbidden it is to cut down fruit-bearing trees even during war.
Earlier today, dozens of settlers celebrated the holiday of Hanukkah by stealing crops from Palestinian-owned olive trees outside the village of Awarta. After the theft, which was escorted by Israeli soldiers, the settlers proceeded to cut down several trees.
Republicans have for decades had these stacks of bills piled up and ready to go to distribute to the party in every state, and I have to read about how Democratic legislators are “calling on the administration to develop a plan.”
You know a tweet has taken off when you finally get the QTs willfully misunderstanding what you’re saying.
Just because you can technically live without something doesn’t mean it wasn’t essential. We sadly treat even basic human needs as commodities or luxuries now.
People do the same shit with abortion that they do with COVID: imagining that only a certain kind of person will need medical care for discrete choices they made, so they can mentally distance themselves from the possibility that it could happen to them too.
“Fat kids grow up to be fat adults.” Yeah okay maybe wrap your head around the fact that it’s not the worst thing in the world to be a fat adult.
That you could be proud of a fat adult. That they will live a full life, with you in it because you’re not their perpetual antagonist.
People prosecuted for their pregnancy outcomes to date were surveilled, turned in by trusted people, including doctors, not period tracking apps.
The corroborating evidence was Google search histories, not app location information. It was texts and emails, not cell tower pings.
As someone who assesses threats against people who work in abortion access as her full time job, I cannot emphasize to you enough how much of our abortion rights have been allowed to crumble because people in power who aren’t at risk at all are afraid of like, a mean email.
Abortion isn’t something anyone should get to vote on, that’s the fucking point.
There should be no power, state or corporate or otherwise, with the authority to regulate autonomously inhabiting your own body. That it should be the domain of law at all is an absurd concept.
@debraj112
@jkohlmann
This is why I'm not a fan of all those "having a daughter made me realize sexism is a thing" takes. There are many men who toe the same line as long as it doesn't actually cost them anything personally.
Who knows what the situation is with this kid giving information about her friend’s abortion to the cops, whether a parent pressured her or who knows what.
But honestly, we’re fucked if we can’t even get kids to side with each other and their safety over the authority of adults.
Resistance Jews and righteous gentiles during the Holocaust and other atrocities are honored in our history as people who adhered to pikuach nefesh. It is a holy act to place reverence for human life above the letter of law.
Governments, laws change, but human rights are eternal.
Well this blew up so I’ll take a second to explain the concept of pikuach nefesh: a principle in Judaism that the preservation of human life overrides virtually any other rule both in Judaism and as it is culturally practiced, in secular law as well.
This is how I was raised.
Helping people get their abortions under criminalized circumstances is stressful and thankless. It’s hard to suppress the urge to seek encouragement and approval for going through the effort.
But it’s not worth it. Knowing a person’s life is different forever has to be enough.
There are 4x as many of fake clinics in the US as there are real ones. They get people in with misleading ads, get names, contact info, other PII, confirm their pregnancy and get them to state their intention to abort.
That is IMO the biggest surveillance risk to pregnant people.
And you’d think Twitter, a place where people love to rag on each other for having basic niceties, would be quick to get that lifestyle creep could also mean boring stuff like no longer paying the minimum credit card payment or having income-based student loan payments go up.
Imagine your grandparents and then parents own a house, then only when you get it do you discover a 300 year old well whose excavation (and constant refilling with water) is going to totally fuck over your kitchen renovation. AND now you have a scary old well inside your house!
Disability rights activists are correct: you will think it will not be you and then faster than you can imagine your life comes unraveled because you simply cannot do what you did before. It can be fluid or temporary and still be as much of a wrecking ball in your life.
We thankfully have tools at our disposal that groups like the Jane Collective did not, and do not have to resort to things that are IMO not compassionate, not human rights-affirming like blindfolding people. But people still need to treat their activities as actually secret.
The college kids have taken the trash cans of jungle juice and made them portable, called Borgs. And as this TikTok explains, despite it standing for “Black-out Rage Gallon,” it’s pretty solid harm reduction.
If Jack Dorsey’s hackers had ex: shorted Twitter stock and then made a fake merger announcement or other market-disrupting hoax, they could have likely made millions and it would have been one of the wildest hacks of the decade. Instead they decided to just spam 4chan nonsense.
Very occasionally I get to bring together my love of privacy advocacy with my love for designing fabrics, and my initial tests are going well. What better way to introduce noise in to hostile data sets than to wear it?
Misunderstanding what “lifestyle creep” is for most gets us absurd articles about how families “don’t have much left over after private school and a 401k.”
Let’s see a different article about how it can still be hard to save when people can now fix broken stuff or go to a doctor.
If it wasn’t on Facebook messenger but text her cell carrier would have handed over those messages just as quickly. And yet we would not (and should never) yell at people to just not have a phone number as if that’s reasonable. Don’t blame people, blame corporations and states.
If you work at an abortion clinic, if you escort, drive people to clinics, I feel like I learned today that you should keep a tourniquet and quik-clot pads in your bag or car.
Even if you do not know how to use them in an emergency, say you have it and someone else likely will.
I would be so mad at my parents and grandparents. Now I have to lay my own heated floors and I have ghosts in my kitchen because previous generations who owned my house didn’t note a haunted well on the disclosure forms.
I am true to what I posted in my name field. Don’t post about crimes, but also don’t perpetuate a culture of blind obedience to vague and untested laws.
Do not guess at what counts, make them fight you to pull what they want from your bared teeth. Fight for your patient’s life.
So here is the reality: when people know they need an abortion they begin googling because that is intuitive. They may not know the legality of abortion in their state before they Google it.
Our threat model and security advice can’t reasonably accommodate “don’t Google it.”
Things cops already use to prosecute people suspected of having abortions:
- texts to a friend
- google search history
- email receipt for pills in inbox
We all deserve apps that do not leak our data, but period tracker apps not even close to the foremost threat in your phone.
I know people are bringing up that the Colorado Springs shooter had made a bomb threat before, but it’s really important to not leave out that it was against his mom.
Almost every single US mass shooter has a history of being violent towards women, often family or partners.
Reminder: it should never be a crime to end your own pregnancy, or to miscarry at home. It does not matter what you take or when it happens or what the circumstances are.
Gestational limits on abortion and fetal harm laws are caustic to human rights and a functioning society.
I don’t think people appreciate how Roe v Wade (abortion), Griswold v Connecticut (birth control), Lawrence v Texas (“sodomy”) are the cases that define when cops can and cannot literally kick your door in and arrest you for autonomously inhabiting your own body.
I maniacally cackle every time they push out the student loan pause, because I’ve been shoving all my would-be payments in a 401k instead for the first time in my life.
In March 2023 we’ll have hit 3 years, which for me means $36,000(!!!) I did not have to send into the ether.
I find it really abhorrent to respond to Europe getting a deadly heatwave with, "Whatever, that's an average day in Texas."
An average winter day in Europe brought Texas to its knees last year and people died. We all are in climate crisis and empathy costs nothing.

The weakest link in anyone’s digital security for their abortion is so far the endpoint of other people who don’t honor their obligation to protect that person.
We can still try to pick privacy-forward systems, but the strongest security is a function of community, not tech.
Annihilation is my devastating romantic movie I watch when I want a good cry. I too would stay in a top secret government facility with my mutated and disintegrating spouse and descend into a horrific nightmare zone to reconcile what happened to him. The Notebook could never.
Stop letting people’s boyfriends build tech stuff for your nonprofit/ mutual aid group/ direct service org.
I know every software engineer acts like he could build literally any product all by himself, but he can’t. He will half-ass it and then inevitably disappear.
Mandated reporting in therapy has to do with harming yourself or another person. Even if you think an abortion might count, make someone else prove fetal personhood in court before you start blabbering misinformation all over the internet. You really should know better.
The abortion access movement didn’t fail. It basically remade Medicaid from scratch + travel support, and kept Roe from falling 20 years earlier, all while everyone else was taking a nap.
The movement is literally more powerful than govt in this moment. It’s not us who failed.
There’s a special place in hell for people who would tip the cops about someone they know having a miscarriage or abortion.
That tends to be the primary way people are prosecuted for being suspected of ending their own pregnancies to date, and it’s a disgrace.
The longer this goes on the less nice I’m going to be. My job is legally sensitive so I get attorneys to help me parse my questions and form new practices around changing laws.
Those in healthcare, care work all need to do the same. Don’t comply in advance and DON’T GUESS.
@DGlaucomflecken
I went on some dates with an orthopedic surgeon, and when I asked him why he picked ortho he said, “I’ve always been really good at putting together IKEA furniture and it’s basically the same thing.”
I will never know why anyone on the left attempts an ill-advised dunk on abortion funds.
Funds are like, a radical and tactical form of organizing that’s also incredibly easy for the general public to agree is a great, values-aligned idea. Just take the win jeeze.
People didn't "just move on" from Roe being overturned. Everywhere I go people are pissed and busy working on it, including record numbers of new people. If you feel like things went quiet in your spaces then look at who you hang out with, bring it up yourself, IDK.
@ask_aubry
I work in abortion digital security and I have to just also remind people in these replies: it’s not realistic to insist that someone try to avoid all tracking. People in these cases are usually turned in by healthcare workers or other people they’re supposed to be able to trust.
ChatGPT does not understand truth vs lies. It’s a probabilistic model that gives you what sounds like words humans might say based on an enormous training corpus for which there is no guarantee of quality or veracity. It’s wild watching grown adults unable to understand this.
It’s good to be mindful of all of the information our daily activities generate in our devices, but I’m frustrated to see many articles and experts discuss digital threats to abortion seekers that are speculative and never mention the existing threats even once.
I know ACOG has been trying to turn its own internal tide to realize a field-wide commitment in OBGYN to abortion as part of the ethical obligation to care.
But what about AAEM or ACEP or other associations for emergency medicine? Can they get ER doctors to not police patients?
Honestly, the most shameful aspect of the NFT market is not that “you could just right-click save the picture.” It’s that way too many people in it see no value in buying art or supporting artists if it’s not a financial instrument to potentially make themselves more money.
I am however actually writing a horror movie about a house angrily resisting its renovators.
It’s inspired by our home’s previous owner, who put folded pennies in the main breaker rather than spend $200 to not potentially murder future occupants in a house fire. Thanks buddy. ❤️
The amount of people who don’t understand that this tweet is a joke concerns me! I’m making light of how pissed I’d be if I got stuck with the expense when other people I know got to avoid it. They don’t put hauntings on disclosures lol.
Reiterating that most “bug out bag” lists constructed by preppers imagine you’re going to leave to go like, survive in the wilderness. They’re almost useless.
The most likely thing you need to prepare for is evacuating to a friend’s house or hotel, maybe with the power out.
Pleased to report everyone’s collective cyberbullying of Google over CPCs on Maps searches for abortion clinics has finally paid off. Check out that “Provides Abortions” filter option.
Test it near you to make sure it works!
Honestly this entire post-Roe period is going to require confronting a lot of latent stigma I think we still have for criminality as a movement overall, despite the romanticizing of groups like the Jane Collective.
I say as someone whose IUD experience was extremely and in my opinion avoidably painful, I dunno that we're very good culturally about helping people through or talking about medical experiences that might be unavoidably painful. Some part of trauma is being lied to or surprised.
I know we all care deeply about people getting their abortions, but there is a pervasive problem of how mostly white people have no experience of being arrested, how it can fuck your life up even if charges are dropped. Patients need everyone to have more awareness and caution.
People are starving and the 100 y/o interstate bridge I use every day soon will crack in half, sending dozens of taxpayers screaming to their deaths.
But don’t you worry, we have plenty of money for more bombs to get made so they can sit in some mildly radioactive warehouse.
I’m intensely dissatisfied with the extent to which this article and those like it continue to not name the hospital executives who enforce patient mutilation in order to protect corporate interests.
I have to say this 10000x between now and the total liberation of abortion. If you give out abortion pills:
Shutting up is free. Do not talk to police. Do not talk to reporters. Do not talk to any state agent. Don't tell friends or family.
Patients need your total silence.
We need less interviews with QAnon believers, more interviews with QAnon orphans: the people who have been left behind as their friends and family choose their delusions over their relationships.
There is no precedent for restricting abortion care by state residency. It has not yet been upheld in any court as a criminal offense.
What the is the point of running an abortion clinic if you’re going to be ruled by fear. Go get an easier job and let the adults handle it.
Digital Defense Fund partnered with artist
@HazelMeadArt
to create this amazing poster and social media-ready graphics for you to share to help navigate digital security for abortion and pregnancy privacy.
Find out more and download the kit at our website:
Security people who tell laypeople unilaterally not to use accessible tools like password managers cus "they've all been hacked" should put a dollar in a Useless Nihilist Jar every time they scare someone in to leaving passwords on post-its on their screen again. STOP "HELPING."
Tropes I wish liberals would stop leaning on in their defenses of abortion:
- the underage sexual assault victim
- the idea that later abortions are always for fetal abnormality or maternal risk
- “wealthy people will always be able to get abortions anyway”
@lingerie_addict
Archeological reconstruction art can be such a political and powerful tool. The artists who worked on the Cheddar Man bust that had people freaking out, the Kennis brothers, have done other similarly stirring and emotional work that tries to honor truths in ancestry.
I think we're doing a disservice if we talk about ex: period tracking apps and ad data without talking about the glaring risk of the existing national network of anti-choice pregnancy surveillance centers that have zero obligation to HIPAA or any other privacy protections.
@Pale_0ntologist
As a Jewish person, this is a spontaneous gathering and it’s a song most people actually know.
Let people offer condolences using the words in their hearts instead of policing their grief.
It’s torturous to read back through my old diaries and see how I was a smart, curious kid begging the adults in my life to talk to me about something other than my weight.
I spent a lot of time navigating young adulthood alone because grownups would only talk about my body.
A few tactics may emerge as more helpful than trying to keep “clean” on all abortion tracking:
- distribute risk, let other trusted people search, drive, pay
- make it so they have to get a warrant, don’t consent to search
- be really loud as a community when someone is arrested
@AishiaDeal
My husband still drives the same 20-year-old Toyota as when I met him. Women like a man who bathes and texts back in a timely manner. Hope this helps.
More of this country is now experiencing what abortion providers and advocates have known for a long time: Because the police don't see it as a problem, this will be allowed to escalate until someone is injured or killed.
