I'm having lots of feelings about these first day of school questions I use for my #Curiosity and critical practice course. I happened to have this pic from last spring's first day of class. I ask them to choose one question to respond to when they introduce themselves.

“Instead of presenting the problem as teachers having high or even the highest burnout levels of all U.S. industries…we should reframe the issue: School systems are the employers worst at providing necessary supports and resources for employees.” 🤯🤯🤯

Thank you so much @ALA_ACRL for offering both a quiet work space and quiet lounge. It has made all the difference. I’ve been able to re-set and rest, tending to myself and my responsibilities, which makes it easier to give presenters my full attention #ACRL2023

The largest book ban in the nation is the book restriction policies in prisons and jails across the United States.

The state's prisons have banned almost 1,000 titles, claiming over half of them pose a “threat to the order and security of the institution.”

Remember that time when @ALALibrary ignored the voices of Black people about having Annual in Florida because of Stand Your Ground laws, and then suddenly was an ally when Pulse happened? But only after white-washing the deaths of mostly Latine folks inside the club? I remember.

Being on search committees has confirmed for me how arbitrary success in academia is. Yes, you have to be smart and capable to make it. But you could have been just as smart and just as capable and not made it. Basically, we work our asses off to buy a lottery ticket.

My response to @CDCDirector. After nearly 3 years, I am beyond stunned at your recent Tweet...talks about washing hands and doesn't say a word about masks or cleaning indoor air. This has led me (as a member of four scientific academies) (1/)

-sigh- come on y’all let’s not do this library folks. The people who are having meltdowns are doing so because a unapologetic fat Black woman accessed a piece of history that they think is only for white people and that INCLUDES library workers.

In the saga of Lizzo and the crystal flute one of the interesting divisions is that library/archive professionals (and historians) are pretty uniformly saying “this is great” and the people who are having meltdowns have never actually used special collections material.

I've been in public health for 22 years. I've advocated and created programs geared towards meeting people where they are. A major difference is the goal was always to assist them in moving from where they are to where optimal health is, not to acceptance of subpar health.
