Dr Maynard called this "the most difficult medical situation" he's ever worked in, saying the capacity for Al-Aqsa is about 150 but there were nearly 700 patients there + est 20k people in the hospital or its immediate grounds: "The traumas that we saw - the burn victims 3/9

@MSF
says a bullet penetrated a wall in ICU. Dr Maynard says he saw damage there: "Our last day working...was last Friday & I was operating all day on a terrible blast explosion injury 5/9

Israel says it’s “not aware of an air strike regarding the incident in question.”
@MSF
Gaza coordinator Carolina Lopez said "drone attacks & sniper fire were just a few hundred metres from the hospital.” The Israeli military says its closest forces were 0.9 miles away and 8/9

On the Genocide Convention, he said: “this is what is most unique here - the explicit expressions of genocidal intent by senior political & military leaders in Israel…normally one has to dig through dusty govt archives to find comms that would prove genocidal intent.” 9/12
Paul called US policy around this “broken”: “We see today over 18k civilians dead mostly due to US arms, the types of arms I was being asked to approve in the State Dept. In that context, I felt I could not be a part of that…US policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian 3/12

1. JOSH PAUL. Been quite a day to speak to him. He was a Director in the bureau approving US arms transfers. A US State Dept spox had earlier called on Israel to “put a premium on civilian lives”, and later Biden said Israel is “starting to lose support” around the world. 2/12
“On the contrary, our provision of security to Israel has led it to become more unwilling...to take the steps to yield peace.” Responding to US calls for Israel to protect civilians, he said: “Of course Israel hasn't rolled back. We've asked nicely 5/12
responsibilities to protect the civilian population of Gaza. So certainly Israel has a right to self defence if a state were to attack it and to defend its people inside its borders, but it does not have a right to go to war against Gaza.” He reiterated that both 11/12
and now we're all out of options? That's not the case. It's good to ask but we have leverage we are not using. As long as we refuse to consider conditioning military aid to Israel, as long as we refuse to consider absenting from a UN vote, this conflict will carry on." 6/12
conflict has been broken for many years. We've been providing military assistance to Israel on the theory that the more secure Israel feels, the more willing it will be to provide the concessions needed to achieve a solution, a peace process, and Palestinian statehood.” 4/12
Responding to Israel’s claim to self-defence: “The problem with self defence is it’s used as a shorthand to mean the right to go to war against a particular population…under intl law [Israel] is the occupying power and its duties there are principally based upon its 10/12

Palestinian journalists…they're trying to document the horrors of war while being in the war itself. There's nowhere to go where they can possibly be safe.” The Israeli military has said it doesn’t target civilians, including journos. On this, she said: "There is certainly a 5/7
We spoke to her a few hours after a joint US-Israel presser in Tel Aviv, in which Yoav Gallant said Israel was “defending [its] values” & operating in adherence with intl law in Gaza, and a few days after Al Jazeera said its cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa was killed by an Israeli 2/7

My last day as a News Reporter for

This is so important, there are many ways into the BBC - I started as a freelance researcher. Not to dimish the hard work journalists do, but the industry is so competitive that we all need a lucky break early on. You aren't lacking in ability because it didn't happen this time!
Although trainee schemes and apprenticeships are an incredible way to get into the BBC and the journalism industry as a whole, they aren't the only way in. Please don't be discouraged if you are rejected, keep trying and look for other ways to get your amazing work in the door!
Reminds me of the the 24hrs in which the dangerous disinformation that Patanjali's herbal tablet had been WHO-approved for Covid treatment went viral on Indian Twitter—bad information is free and travels fast. Thank goodness for places like
@AltNews
, constantly tackling this.
Overnight, reports began circulating in Israeli media attempting to discredit
#PegasusProject
by twisting the words of an
@amnesty
statement.
The twisted version caught fire online and is now being parroted by Indian politicians.

Responding to the death toll, Tess said: “We're in the thousands & thousands now. This war has had a disproportionate impact on children because they make up about half of the Gazan population…40% of the casualties are children. The latest number there, of 20k, is staggering 3/7

Need to amplify discussions around women's pain—it isn't taken seriously enough and medical research historically focused on men, resulting in fewer effective treatments & pain relief options for women. Why does it take an average of 7.5 years to get an

diagnosis?!
Here is my second piece for the
@guardian

Did you know that laparoscopic surgery - currently one of the main treatment options for endometriosis - could actually be making a sufferer’s symptoms worse?
Glad I got this story into one of my

More of this please! Cannot over stress the importance of having aesthetically pleasing, accessible, well-furnished communal spaces—they help everyone thrive. Imagine how many books read, new skills learned, in a space that's a refuge even if you can't afford to buy anything.
This is Oslo’s new PUBLIC LIBRARY. It’s unbelievable. Completely free, open to everyone until 10pm every day. There is a wine bar. Views to die for. All the books.
And for anyone interested, a BBC article on how the dead are counted in Gaza (the figs are trusted by various intl organisations, including the World Health Organisation):
