This looks like an exciting study – we need much more research examining the impacts of climate representations in film/television on individual climate attitudes and behaviors. Looking forward to reading this in detail!

I am extremely grateful to my participants who bravely shared their stories with me, especially doing so online during COVID lockdowns. I thank @BSCA_Aus in particular for helping me recruit several participants and @monashclicomm for hosting me for a subsequent research visit.

The findings have implications for efforts to mobilize climate activism in the wake of extreme weather events. There is an opportunity to engage affected individuals, but it needs to be done responsibility and sensitively as people recover physically and/or emotionally.

There is too much to unpack in a tweet thread but I hope people find the paper interesting. Dozens of more quantitative-oriented studies have examined how extreme weather affects climate change issue engagement – this study contributes more depth on unique individual experiences.

Other reasons relate to storytelling: participants felt they had experienced the effects of climate change firsthand (which makes bushfires more intense and more frequent) and some felt a duty to share their stories with politicians, the media, and their communities.

These findings are not generalizable but we explore in depth the reasons why people responded differently. A significant aspect relates to trauma and emotions. Engaging in activism (especially with others) is healing for some, but others choose to distance themselves from it.

We found that bushfire experiences can influence activism in different ways: 45% of participants increased their activism; 39% maintained the same level of activism; 15% decreased engagement

We interviewed 33 Australian adults who lived through direct bushfire experiences and had previously participated in climate activism. We explored to what extent and in what ways these experiences influenced their activism. Their stories were often intense and harrowing.
