Thank you to @SenateBudget for inviting me to testify as an expert witness in Congress on Wednesday, and especially for exposing thousands of new documents showing that Big Oil's climate promises continue to be full of hot air. ICYMI, here are my opening and closing remarks. 1/n

@SenJeffMerkley pushed back on the fossil fuel industry’s misinformation campaign to label liquefied fossil gas as “clean.” The reality is, it’s just as bad - or even worse - for our climate and communities than coal. #StopLNG

The fossil fuel industry has known about the economic and climate harms of its products but has deceived the American public to keep collecting more than $600 billion each year in subsidies while raking in record-breaking profits.

We exposed how Big Oil uses universities to rebrand its polluting products as climate-safe—all to protect its bottom line. Now, Stanford has announced it will examine its fossil fuel-funded research program.

Our expansive @OversightDems and @SenateBudget investigation revealed that Big Oil has been pushing climate disinformation since the 1960s. They knew their emissions fueled climate change, but they obscured the science in a shocking betrayal of our people.

I’m not surprised that the FTC has found evidence of collusion with the cartel and price-gouging. Congress should pass my windfall profits bill to return Big Oil’s excess gains to the American people’s pockets.

JUST IN: The economy added 175,000 jobs in April. We’ve seen the fastest job growth in history with over 15 MILLION jobs added under @POTUS . Unemployment rate has been below 4% for 27 months—the longest streak since the 1960s! This is what a strong labor market looks like.

The climate crisis has been fueled by Big Oil’s decades-long campaign of denial, disinformation, and doublespeak. New documents expose the fossil fuel industry’s evolving strategies to prevent action on climate change.

Big Oil is the new Big Tobacco. They create death and destruction, and then spend billions denying their responsibility. Like the tobacco industry before them, the DOJ must hold these companies accountable for breaking the law.

As I said in the @SenateBudget hearing yesterday: Big Oil is using their gobs of money to fund climate chaos disinformation. I’m working to shed light on their lies, get dark money out of politics, and stop the dirty energy price gouging that fuels Big Oil’s record profits!

Big Oil spent decades hiding their pollution while pocketing obscene profits. We’re paying twice—at the pump and in climate chaos. These documents deliver a message loud and clear: polluters should pay us, not delay us.

The concept behind my Polluters Pay Climate Fund proposal is simple: you break it, you pay to fix it. As @RepRaskin & I discussed yesterday, the big polluters who are driving the climate crisis—while making huge profits—should have to help foot the bill to clean up their mess⬇️

In contrast to California’s leading efforts to combat the climate crisis, @SenAlexPadilla exposed the fossil fuel industry’s deception. Big Oil is not only misinforming the public about their own climate efforts, but also actively working to undermine climate progress.

. @SenSanders If we had an industry that knowingly caused climate change and lied about it, how can we hold them accountable? @SharonYEubanks : RICO and other laws. When DOJ sued Big Tobacco, the companies were ordered to change the way they do business and pay for damages.
