Tomorrow, I'll be presenting data and computational modeling to go with (some of) these stimuli. Even for these simple, achromatic, displays brightness is a complex, nonlinear interaction between local luminance, and global context capture.#ECVP.

Very fun to present this demo to colleagues, and to the general public! Thanks for the #SciComm opportunity @ecvp_.

How do we perceive the achromatic (grayscale) color of objects in our environment? In our #ECVP2024 demo, we showed how slight variations in local and global surface properties, change our perception of two identical gray targets tremendously. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!

This by no means settles the question of interaction between ipRGC and cone pathways -- but it does put limits on how large an effect could be under these conditions.

Three conclusions:.A) if there is an effect of melanopsin on this kind of detection sensitivity, it is very small;.B) Getting this kind of stimulation right, without e.g. stimulating cones with the light meant for melanopsin, is hard;.C) Thus, false positives are likely.

We tested whether human observer ability to notice small flickering in light directed at the cones, was affected by stimulating the melanopsin ipRGCs -- through either adaptation (>5min) to melanopsin stimulation, or a pulse (<1s) of melanopsin stimulation.

Do these ipRGCs interact with the classical cone pathways? Does stimulating them affect (conscious) visual perception? There is plenty of opportunity, but mixed evidence, for interaction.

In addition to the "classical" pathway of visual perception through the rods and cones, the retina also contains intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which express the photopigment melanopsin.
