My grandfather landed on Sword Beach on D-Day with his two best friends, collectively nicknamed the BBC (Burrows, Beck and Crangles). Hugh Crangles, a catholic from the Falls Road never came home. This is his grave in Normandy. We must never forget the sacrifice.

This day exactly 30 years ago, Mr Adam’s sent a very different message to the world.
The Shankill bomber Thomas Begley, was buried with full IRA “honours”.
It’s an offence under s.13 Terrorism Act 2000 to wear clothing that creates a suspicion you support a proscribed organisation - Hamas is proscribed. We cannot be a society that tolerates & normalises this behaviour, whatever our politics. My blog addressed this point (see bio).
I’ve just watched the video of a lovely lady who was running the Poppy Appeal stall in Tesco’s in Lurgan being abused for 5 minutes by a rude and bigoted person. Absolutely horrendous that this volunteer was treated in this way. Credit to those who intervened.
@britishlegion
The love and duty of Ronnie Hill’s wife sharply contrasts with the callousness of those who planned, planted and authorised the bombing. It’s the Mrs Hill’s of this world we should be eulogising, not the terrorists.
#OnThisDay
in 2000, Ronnie Hill, 69, married father, school headmaster, died from injuries inflicted by IRA time bomb, Remembrance Sunday, 8/11/1987, at Enniskillen War Memorial. 1/12 murdered. Slipped into a coma for 13 years. Died

In 2018 after 6 nights of rioting in a city north of the border, Sinn Fein criticised the PSNI for moving in to make arrests & restore order. Now they’re calling for heads because the Garda weren’t robust enough. Change of policy or political opportunity?
Noticed a lot of the work Christmas do’s in Belfast this year are people from Dublin firms. One group said to me they can have dinner, drinks & shared overnight rooms in Belfast for 40 % cheaper than just the dinner & drinks in Dublin. They’ve booked to come back next year!
I met a few people from Ukraine when I was in Donegal, they said they had received great local support. I noticed signs like this is in small shops and thought it showed great community spirit. Reminded me that speaking to local people is a better barometer than social media.
What a terribly sad sight in 2023. A still image from
@bbcnewsline
report this evening into young republicans. The image is from an appearance of the hip hop group Kneecap in West Belfast. I enjoy Irish culture - but this isn’t cultural nor does it promote good relations.
The serving UK Prime Minister & Chancellor issued fines for breaking Covid laws because we’re all equal under the law.
Bobby Storey funeral 30.06.20 thousands present - zero fines.
Ormeau Road 05.02.21 - 41 people gathered & it’s on video - zero fines.
Something’s not right.
Damian has an issue because I led an operation with fine colleagues in Lurgan in 2018 that put a Continuity IRA “Colour Party” where they belonged - in a police cell & then in front of a judge. The entire Colour Party pleaded guilty - it’s called the rule of law not collusion.
@tim_brannigan
@JonBurrowsNI
you would have taken no nonsense. Straight into mini buses 🚌 of to jail with no bail. Sorry 😢 these people aren’t Republicans. Collusion is no illusion.
It’s difficult not to conclude that the Nazi symbols are deliberately chosen to cause maximum hurt; in the full knowledge it was that evil regime that murdered 6 millions Jews.
Utterly cowardly behaviour, hopefully swift and visible justice follows in the days, weeks and months ahead for all those who have broken the law. Best wishes to the men and women of
@gardainfo
What an awful tweet and terrible insult to the victims and survivors. It is also an awful signal to the vulnerable youth that some terrorists still try and radicalise.
Begley was a mass murderer & the victims didn’t lose their lives, they had their lives stolen from them.
20th March, 1993
2 bombs detonated by the PIRA in Bridge Street, Warrington, killed 3 years old Johnathan Ball and 12 years old Tim Parry, whilst injuring 56 more innocent people
This cowardly atrocity 31 years ago, happened the day before Mother's Day
Lest we Forget 🙏♥
Thomas Begley the deceased Shankill Road bomber, can never be put in the same category as his innocent victims. The same applies to loyalist terrorists.
Sectarian mass murder, no different to the loyalist gangsters who walked into pubs and shot people because they were likely to be Catholics. Anyone who can’t say such crimes are wrong, is morally bankrupt.
I hope Covid Inquiry examines how 2 Prime Ministers can be given Covid fines; but when 35 people at Ormeau Rd prima facie breached the regulations, a deal was done that no-one was fined & a law abiding officer was suspended for trying to get the organisers details.
What a hero!
Be wary of those politicians who want to strip police officers of their sidearms. When the unthinkable unfolds, you want the nearest police officer to be able to intervene and save lives.
Female police officer took out the Sydney stabbing rampage terrorist.
female NSW Police officer was acting alone - she ran into the shopping centre, confronted the attacker on her own and neutralised him.
The alternative to shooting a man dead leaving his place of worship was not to shoot him. Anyone who says there was no alternative to this or any other terrorist murder, whether it was by loyalists or republicans, is morally bankrupt in my view.
(1)
SEFF remembers Hugh McCormac who was murdered on 3rd March 1985 by Provisional IRA terrorists.
Hugh (a Sergeant in the RUC GC) was 40 years old, off duty and was shot in front of his family and other worshippers whilst leaving Mass ..
Party of law and order ?
1. Bobby Storey funeral conduct.
2. Lobbied for a law abiding officer to be suspended re Ormeau Road & the immediate release of an arrested person.
3. Opposes TASER for PSNI
4. Opposes Baton Rounds for PSNI
5. Opposes Water Cannon use by PSNI

The people of Dublin have the right to be safe on their streets, in their homes and communities.
The Gardaí have my full support but given the catastrophic operational failures last night, I have no confidence in the Justice Minister, or the Garda Commissioner.
@maryloumcdonald
Reading the newspaper coverage of some of the weekends dissident parades reminded me of Easter 2018. A CIRA colour party got a shock in Lurgan, all 8 were arrested, charged, remanded & convicted. Not a stone was thrown afterwards, because communities are fed up with these goons.
After 18 months & over 1000 hours of investigation into a miscarriage of justice relating to the events on the Ormeau Rd on 05.02.21; this week I will lodge complaints & reports with the Police Ombudsman & other investigatory bodies.
Some people have a lot of explaining to do.
Two weeks tomorrow since a court of law held that 2 honest & blameless PSNI officers were unlawfully treated for political purposes. Still no public apology from PSNI leadership & no retraction of repugnant allegations of nefarious conduct by senior politicians. Not good enough.
Police officers wearing full face coverings on patrol is incompatible with the policing by consent model we value in the UK. As citizens we need to be able to see the faces of the officers we encounter in our homes & communities.
I’ve spoken with several estate agents recently who said that the number of people re-locating from Great Britain & Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland to live is unprecedented. For all our (fixable) problems this is clearly a great place to live & far from a broken statelet.
Placing the Jewish people fighting for their lives in occupied Europe during World War II in the same bracket as Hamas & the IRA - both proscribed murderous terrorist groups is disgusting.
The vile
@SecBlinken
suggesting if Hamas surrenders everything will somehow be rosy for Palestinians. Like calling for the surrender of the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw ghetto, or the IRA in Ireland. All resistance movements are born out of oppression & injustice
Why do Ulster Scot Protestants support genocide? The mass murder of men, women and children? Why do they champion it with such relish - crush, erase, eradicate, destroy? 8,000 murdered already. How many dead kids is enough? 10,000? 100,000? 500,000?
Many of those who queued up to condemn the Prime Minister for causing offence to trans people, are tone deaf to the offence caused to victims of terrorism here in Northern Ireland.
With Kelly’s extensive and serious criminal record, what reputation was he trying to protect? Genuine question.
‘Frivolous and vexatious’: Libel action taken by Sinn Féin’s Gerry Kelly against writer struck out – The Irish Times
Michelle this contains untrue & highly defamatory statements; made prior to any investigation. No officer was heavy handed. They did NOT interfere with people laying flowers. Para 11 of Court judgement states “the memorial event had finished”, indeed people has dispersed. Retract
Deeply concerned at the footage showing PSNI officers arrive at the scene of the Sean Graham bookies massacre. Unjustified heavy handed tactics have been used towards relatives laying flowers including the arrest of one of the survivors. Requested urgent call with Chief Constable
It’s not just the words some people type on their social media accounts about the attack on the people of Israel; it’s the glee in their face & the glint in their eye, they seem to be radiated by it. Few times in your life do you truly understand what made the Holocaust possible.
Someone who is trying to repair their reputation doesn‘t Tweet like this. Former terrorists who want to rebuild their reputation should say “sorry” for their actions & stop boasting & eulogising. This would be cheaper & more sincere than suing an honest freelance journalist.
37 yrs ago 38 Irish Republican prisoners were getting into a lorry at H7 and heading to the front gate of Long Kesh and freedom. One of Big Bob’s best ops! I had the privilege of the front passenger seat. Well someone had to check we were taking the right route out!!
@afneil
Andrew the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland agree with you, we sadly have to put up with the a minority of terrorist sympathisers who are vastly over represented on Twitter.
@metpoliceuk
@JakeWSimons
An apology is good although it is hard to see what offence could possibly be committed by a sign that reflects the law of the land - Hamas are a proscribed terrorists group.
Only 39 % want constitutional change currently. A clear message to the politicians to focus on the day job - making Northern Ireland work better for all the people who live here.
People are moving to Northern Ireland in bigger numbers because of what our country offers. Natural beauty, excellent education, jobs, relatively low crime, friendly people & affordable housing. However we are only scratching the surface of our true potential.
It’s great to call Belfast home. We were tired, broke and pretty lonely in London. Our move was motivated by a desire for well-being, community and hope. Now we’re here and building the dream. I’m so grateful. Have a super weekend everyone! ❤️❤️❤️
Which is why
@JoeBrolly1993
posting an image yesterday with a Star of David overlayed with the Swastika was really inappropriate. The Nazi’s murdered millions of Jews and wanted to wipe them off the face of the earth.
Mob rule by people who are hiding their identities. They should rely on the force of their arguments against buying Israeli goods, as opposed to what is de facto intimidation.
I awoke this morning angry too. Angry that an honest & law abiding man was put through this. Angry that our defamation laws would permit such a vexatious & undeserving case to even get off the ground. We need our defamation laws reformed - a ‘Malachi’s Law’. Never again.
Over 250 people died in 1973 due to terrorism here. Presenting this unlawful escape from lawful custody, like an episode of the A-Team sends terrible signals. Especially this week when victims remember two of the the worst atrocities. Violent dissidents feed off this romanticism.
I condemn every murder in Northern Ireland, including the one committed by you.
As for anyone involved in the Ormeau Road atrocity; I would throw them in prison after due process and then throw away the key.
Be careful
@PolDeBuitleir
I’ve no problem actioning any defamation.
Have heard a lot from 'expert witness' Jon Burrows former RUC/PSNI officer about this incident but didn't hear his expert opinion on Police Ombudsman investigation into the Ormeau Road bookies and other killings which found strong evidence of collusion between RUC and loyalists

@EmmaVardyTV
best wishes on her departure from Northern Ireland.
Her legacy remains and a reminder of one of the most powerful street interviews we’ve ever seen here.

Gerry Carroll MLA thinks Hillary Clinton should be sacked for being hawkish on a proscribed terrorist group, whilst he thinks it’s fine to tweet “Victory to the Palestinian Resistance ✊✊” just hours after the murderous attack by Hamas on Israel.
Contrast this sentence with the 18 years an Old Bailey judge gave dissident republican Ciaran Maxwell in 2017 for possession of pipe bombs. We’ve a major cultural problem.
PSNI bomb attack: Gavin Coyle jailed for four years for attempted murder - BBC News
I oppose the Legacy Act too, because I believe the rule of law is sacrosanct & no one is above the law. However, when Sinn Fein members were arrested during legacy investigations (example Gerry Adams in 2014) Sinn Fein roundly condemned the PSNI. You can’t have it both ways.
I welcome confirmation that the Irish Government will take an interstate case to challenge the British Government’s Legacy Act under the European Convention on Human Rights.
Victims and families have been stating from the outset that this shameful Act Is a flagrant breach of…
The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland is now in receipt of my full complaint in relation to matters arising from the Ormeau Rd incident 05.02.21. I will operate a policy of trust, but verify in relation to their handling of my complaint.
959 days ago on the Ormeau Rd a clear assault on a Constable was caught on camera as was the suspects face. The officer made a complaint of assault & yet the case hasn’t been brought to court. Why?
The PSNI leadership have said all assaults on officers are rigorously pursued 👇
I trust this will be the SF response if there is a politically sensitive republican arrest. To date, such arrests generated protests, lobbying, accusations of the PSNI trying to effect an election & threats to withdraw support from policing. We must ALL be equal under the law.

Two honourable & law abiding police officers were treated dishonourably & unlawfully. They’ve endured 32 months of vilification & uncertainty.
Now for a full & fearless investigation, I won’t rest until justice is fully done.
In preparation for a forthcoming blog I spoke to a lovely Jewish lady from Israel; she has lived in Northern Ireland for over 30 years. Our warmth won her heart.
But one thing she said really struck me and I hope some people of influence take note of it.

Richest party in Ireland attends ‘smash capitalism’ event. Sinn Fein has over 200 staff, 50 properties and a multi million pound fundraising network in the USA. 🤔
Socialism think tank forks out £1,400 for Sinn Fein MP’s trip to South Africa
The exemplary young Constable unlawfully suspended 3 years ago to placate politicians, is still battling against a vexatious disciplinary case. The Chief officers who unlawfully suspended the officer have never been investigated. This destroys morale.
There is significant inconsistency emerging. This man from Northern Ireland is known, but no action has yet been taken. The relevant legislation is the same across the UK (sec 13 Terrorism Act 2000). This contrasts with the action below 👇
📹 This is footage of officers going into the crowd in Trafalgar Square to extract a suspect.
He had been seen wearing a green headband with white Arabic script but had since removed it. Our CCTV team were still able to spot him and guide officers in.

I’ve managed to obtain the Facebook live video of the memorial on 05.02.2021. It is 14 mins 35 seconds long, was filmed on a tripod located to the left of the memorial stone as you look at it. I know who operated the equipment. No PSNI officer is seen on the video whatsoever.
After an exhilarating morning surfing in perfect conditions at Marble Hill Donegal, it’s lovely to warm up with a sausage roll and a pint by the fire. We are blessed to live so close to so much beauty.
Saying something repeatedly doesn’t make it true. The conditions aren’t near being met and there is urgent work needed to fix public services, this requires the laser focus of the First Minster.
If I heard
@bbcnewsline
right, these people actually sat in the public gallery in a Crown Court during a murder trial today, with their faces covered like this. I hope the reporting is incorrect.
I provided evidence to the High Court in this case. The behaviour of the PSNI senior leadership towards their most junior officers was disgraceful. This was one of the most shameful derelictions of leadership responsibility I’ve ever know in my police career.
Two junior PSNI officers were unlawfully disciplined for an arrest made at a Troubles atrocity commemoration to allay any threat of Sinn Fein abandoning its support for policing in Northern Ireland, a High Court judge ruled today.
Behaving like this on our sacred war memorials is more than disrespectful; laws like sec 5 Public Order Act include disorderly behaviour likely to cause distress. Specific laws are probably needed, but existing ones need enforced.
@IncMonocle
It’s deeply disrespectful to climb on a war memorial, but there’s no law making it illegal.
In the absence of a law officers cannot automatically arrest, but they can intervene & make it clear the behaviour isn't acceptable.
That’s what they are seen doing here in this video.
It should be an absolutely terrifying thought; that an unnamed politician can secure the arbitrary release of a arrested person by ringing an unarmed senior officer & not a single piece of paper apparently exists.
Grave matters & not rebutted at any stage.
Bed 😴
Remember Sinn Fein cannot yet bring themselves to attend a PSNI passing out ceremony. When your journey to fully supporting the civilian police service is not yet complete, it is unsurprising there remains a major journey ahead in terms of foreign policy. Not yet a normal party.
Irish military neutrality is the bedrock of our foreign policy and our proud peacekeeping role. Any change to protections of our neutrality can only be decided by the Irish people in a refefendum. Not by Micheal Martin and his FF/FG colleagues.
I’ve written to the PSNI asking that a publication made on the social media platform X; (formally known as Twitter) on the 07.10.2023 is assessed under section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000. That section relates to support for proscribed organisations.
Alliance have never made a comment on the wrongdoing towards 2 PSNI officers on Ormeau Rd; on the failure to investigate their unlawful treatment & the perceived rewarding of wrongdoers. They have positions of power in the Board & DoJ so perhaps actions should accord with words.
Those sub-postmasters wronged by the Post Office/Horizon scandal require comprehensive and speedy address.
We are calling for the forthcoming legislation on exoneration to cover Northern Ireland.
I hope Chief Constable Boucher can do on arrival, what Chief Constable Byrne could not do on departure - look two young Constable’s in the eye and say, “we are sorry”.
Gerry Kelly stated he couldn’t fully remember what he said to a senior police officer when he rang him on the 05.02.2021. I attach a segment of his press release where he made 2 clear requests - both subsequently happened. Keeping good records helps mitigate memory fade.
Hard to believe it’s a year ago today that terrorists attempted to murder DCI John Caldwell. He survived & his colleagues have been expertly rounding up the suspects. Despite the leadership chaos around them, the rank & file remained courageous & diligent.
Sinn Féin has a long & enduring history of solidarity & support for the cause of Palestinian national self determination & freedom.

Para 76.13 of the Operation Kenova Interim Report is worth reading in full.
PIRA committed ‘brutal acts of torture and murder, each evil act being the epitome of cowardice’.
The Met Police need to clarify what happened here & take swift action. An assessment of potential misconduct & urgent restraining is required before the officer patrols again. She is utterly mistaken on the law & as for the facial gesture it’s astonishing.

What a contrast to the class shown by the late Queen, when she said “President and friends” in Irish at the State Banquet dinner at Dublin Castle in 2011.
Whatever your politics this Mickey Mouse stuff doesn’t help anyone. We’ve been told that a united Ireland is just around the corner since the turn of the millennium.
The most transparent response to this would to be for the SoSNI to commission another “Assessment on Paramilitary Groups in Northern Ireland”, one hasn’t been conducted since 2015.
The people in Northern Ireland are entitled to an updated assessment on all the proscribed groups.
On a broader note beyond just this case; it’s hard to reconcile a party publicly saying the IRA were noble & patriotic; then their members suing for damage to reputation when they claim they’ve been associated with the IRA by a third party.
The Police Ombudsman has formally declined to open any investigation into alleged wrong doing related to the unlawful suspension/repositioning of 2 PSNI officers (Ormeau Rd case). Astonishingly, Ombudsman still wants the law abiding Constable disciplined. Further update tomorrow.
From the outset of events on 5 th Feb 2021 on Ormeau Rd, false facts were allowed to flourish. Calm & ethical leadership defends the truth & those you lead & also defuses tension. The officers are still defamed on line.
NB - I have watched the full video.

Chris, this is the most defamatory & untrue statement that I preserved. It was made before any investigation & fact finding which was deeply irresponsible. It runs contrary to what every investigation has concluded and yet you keep it online. Apologise, retract and delete.
Today’s events on Ormeau Road were a disgrace
The actions of PSNI were vindictive, cowardly and an illustration of a nefarious element within policing who will stop at nothing to thwart the campaign for truth & justice for the Seán Grahams families

It’s worth also reflecting on the Bobby Storey funeral debacle & the Ormeau Road unlawful suspension. Sinn Fein public office holders had no notes & no records yet were making/lobbying for operational decisions. End to end we need an injection of transparency in Northern Ireland.
