"To the scientists wondering if there will even be an NIH by the end of this administration: this committee’s resounding message is yes” Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). Glad congress recommends replacing suggested 40% cuts with $400M increase for NIH.

I like the term they used for neuroinflammation, the Flame of the Brain, but not as good as Piglet telling Pooh that the stuffing between his ears is getting too hot from thinking!

Inflammation in the brain can be beneficial or pathogenic. It varies across neurological diseases. And many new ways are emerging to modulate it An outstanding new review @ScienceMagazine https://t.co/R6AEcg80xj

If NIH payline is 10% that doesn’t mean you have a 1 in 10 chance. It means if your grant isn’t better than 90% of others, it gets nothing. Write an average grant? You get nothing. Write 1000 average grants? You still get nothing. It’s not roulette. It’s a ranking.

The NIH has decided that scientists can only submit 6 grants a year. OK. But you need a score that’s < 10% at least to get funded. Meaning, at best, 1 out of 10 grants you submit will have a chance (YMMV of course). 🫠

It not a statement of modern healthcare systems in general, but that of the US healthcare system. Performance metrics for Canada are either the same or better than the US and they spend abut 29% of what the US spends on administration. ( NEJM 2003 349(8): 768-775)

I spent the weekend playing with ChatGPT, MidJourney, and other AI tools… and by combining all of them, published a children’s book co-written and illustrated by AI! Here’s how! 🧵
