This essay hits the nail on the head in terms of showing how misleading the label of "luxury" can be, and how we can take more pleasure in many more everyday experiences as long as we attune our senses to their value.

An essential belief of mine is that one should treat pleasure as something of a skill — it can be learned, cultivated, appreciated. We can study our senses and more for the sake of pleasure. A few notes towards that end.

big energetic disconnect—a schism, even—between people who see child-like playfulness as a sign of vitality and intellectual curiosity versus people who see it as unacceptable immaturity

When people give off “I must save the world” energy It usually comes from the fact that they’re deeply enmeshed in saving themselves And it really truly *feels* like the world is at stake

I once got nerdsniped into these myself and I would say my boost in general mood during the past year has come from focusing on having an impact first on what's immediately around me. I can't help but think evolution has wired us to feel abstract empathy only to a certain level.

re: existential risk / ai safety etc it’s psychically hazardous to expand your sphere of concern very far beyond your sphere of influence. a felt sense of powerlessness spoils your epistemics like nothing else

Next time your kids scream in public and someone without kids seems annoyed, remember they’re free-riding. Our species is done unless we have kids. The people who choose to spend time and money on themselves instead of the next generation can hear a little bit of crying.

One thing I notice in SF is the blurred lines between work and play time e.g. people performative coding at bars / parties signaling “hustle”. This is extremely peasant-coded and not conducive to great work imo. History’s elites and greats kept strict borders and took leisure

I'm telling you... It's time to stop with this Left/Right nonsense attempt at categorizing people... For no other reason than it isn't working anymore, at all. It has lost all ability to analyze or define. It's baby babble to me at this point... 0 clarity or function

There's something so poetically funny about the the online left painting Luigi Mangione into a Marxist working class hero, only for him to actually be a center-right biohacking Thiel-loving tech bro.

what's truly unsettling is how comfortable young americans are sacrificing themselves for causes that barely touch their lives. in the past, ideological suicide missions made a dark kind of sense - coming from those under abject control or palpable suffering. we're wading

Real. Bad decisions at least provide information, which is what you lack when you are indecisive, and will help you more in the long run (assuming you’re self aware enough to reflect on them).

unpopular opinion but the whole "no drinking" vibe is correlated with a massive spike in social isolation. yes, binge drinking is bad, but going out for a glass of wine or a beer with friends on the regular actually has positive effects that outweigh the negative health

Degrowthers should lead by example. Don't tell us how you think we should live. Live that way yourselves, and show us how much better it is.

Every now and then I look at the way sidewalks are slightly pitched for drainage, and I remember there are thousands of little details like this hidden in plain sight - incalculable love and effort that past generations put into improving life that we now benefit from
