chief operating officer at University Hospital Southampton - I mostly tweet about work, occasionally running, but all views are personal
@uhsft
@sotonchildhosp
I’m taking a moment to thank our amazing intensive care teams
@UHSFT
for today for the first time in a very long time we have no covid patients in our intensive care units - I thank you all for your amazing hard work, brilliant outcomes and your dedication and care
@UHS_CritCare
Generally it seems at the moment that nhs staff are tired having worked so hard and changed so much over this covid period - you are truly amazing and I hope this sign I pinched from our neighbours and partners at
@SolentNHSTrust
makes you feel a bit better
Nurses strike
@UHSFT
tomorrow - I stand with you all and wish you would be paid more - many amazing nurse colleagues - tomorrow I’ll be on site all day and into the evening doing all I can to support safe care across our hospitals
My daughter and grandson putting a big smile on my face at the end of a tough week ! I think they actually think I do more than I do but I’ll take this !
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
Today we are all broken hearted in our house as we said goodbye to our 13 year old Labrador Luna - we’ve had her since a puppy and since when our girls still were children at home with us - she will always be walking with us ❤️
Last night I had a great experience shadowing
@decsamethasone
the surgical registrar - amazing to see how busy he was - ED, into theatre, bleep literally never stopped - what a tough job they have - incredible work, kindness, skill and all with a smile - thank you awesome
@UHSFT
You’ll see all the media about this today but I’m just happy it’s put a smile on the faces of our many amazing people
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
thank you to you all for all you do - you deserve this as do all the NHS staff across the UK - the best workforce ever
Lost a very dear colleague today from west wales - clinical director for unscheduled care and emergency medicine consultant - a great friend, colleague and advisor to me during my 4.5 years in wales - I’ll never forget his support, the fun we had and his commitment to the nhs x
This gentleman - Jamie from Dublin has just stuffed money in my pocket for sponsorship - met him 5 minutes ago - how amazing is this
@SotonChildHosp
@charity_shc
Work life balance - I’ve decided to get a work phone so I can take all my work apps off my own phone with the aim of not looking at them 24-7 !! Think this is a good step as too much time at weekends and late evening checking in on work when I can actually do nothing useful
I have run over 600 miles of training since April for london this weekend - all I can do now is hope it’s enough and enjoy the occasion as much as I can
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
@charity_shc
3 hours into my 4 hour (I know lightweight) shift - this man does his work with a constant smile on his face despite the daily challenges - which I am seeing - loving this
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
If I get through today I’ve made exactly 1 year as chief operating officer
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
not the year I expected but I’ve met so many fantastic people and thank them all for their dedication
Proof at least that I have been on site today, not the best colour scrubs but very grateful they’ve enabled me to visit some clinical areas and thank some of our amazing people
@UHSFT
you are all awesome
The end lol - no more marathon tweets except to thank my sponsors which I’ll get to in due course - truly inspired by you all - am heading back to Devon tonight for a day off tomorrow
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
@charity_shc
Derek Sandeman - brilliant man, I’ve had the immense pleasure of working with - kind, patient focused, public servant, visionary, inspirational, wicked sense of humour, always ahead of his time, thanks for everything Derek - we will all miss you immensely
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
Please retweet far and wide to all our colleagues
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
a wonderful message from 9 year old Rosie - a Southampton resident - thank you Rosie this lifts our spirits x
I don’t get why we don’t implement tougher covid rules presently but maybe decision makers know something I don’t - all I know is our hospital is full and struggling with covid and non-covid demand
I’m going to say we’ve probably done more in 6 weeks than my 20 year nhs Director career - enable the front line and WOW - I am sad this is happening in such sad times but in total awe of the nhs people
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
So many kind comments on and off here - people are so lovely - I am locking down my account now and will be back in a few weeks to engage with those that want to follow
I am leaving Southampton in the next 10 minutes heading back to Devon for Xmas and also off next week-it’s been a really interesting year spent at work in a place that I think is outstanding, we’ve faced a lot of stress and heartache but we always come through. We are UHS
@UHSFT
On international day of the midwife I respect you all - I work with many and have admired and respected many over my career but I love no mifwife like this one - my daughter Grace
I love seeing all the celebrations of exam results - young people succeeding is so great - I bombed my results compared to what I should have got - started a YTS on £27 per week - I found my route in life much later - so if not so good please don’t worry - opportunity lies ahead
Home from our clap for Katy and all our people on ward C5 / they’ve cared for patients right from the very beginning of this awful disease - they are awesome - I feel so sad this evening for everyone and immensely proud of everyone in the NHS - RIP Katy x
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
I honestly (despite trying) have no idea what it’s like to work on a ward that’s stretched, a clinic that’s overbooked, a bursting ED, multiple cleans, full waste everywhere, or booking patients, worse cancelling activity for patients that need us - I do know you are all amazing
Home in Devon for a week off - I am role modelling this time - emails off, work app deleted (power BI) and leaving my colleagues whom I trust immensely to cover me
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
I warn you the next week of tweets may be limited to running and rest - happy Easter
RIP Thomas Burnside - a true portering legend at Princess Anne Hospital - thoughts very much with Marc and Tom’s partner and work family - porters and Princess Anne Hospital
@UHSFT
4 hours with our patient porters today - just don’t see the hospital from their lens so I have gained so much from my shift - I will be back - so much to reflect but mainly how awesome they are and what crucial members of our
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
family - thank you
Nurse on ward tonight - “you look like one of the big bosses” - lol - I’m not big and I am not really the boss of anything - I wasn’t quick enough to say “you look like one of our incredible nurses” but I wish I had - thank you to all our wonderful teams
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
my tweets are repetitive lately but I’m not embarrassed to say many of us are struggling -today we have been pushed again to the maximum with covid growing in the hospital and many of my colleagues going over and above to try and maintain services
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
thank you
Home for a week off, my eldest daughter gets married monday - been cancelled a few times so big celebration next year but officially married Monday ! Tweets will revert to running news next week, emails off
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
75 years of the nhs and despite the funding, workforce, performance and staff morale challenges I still believe we are all immensely lucky as a country we have the NHS - the best staff in the world who go on tirelessly despite the issues they face - thank you to you all
@UHSFT
Just spent an emotional hour opening all my gifts and reading all my cards from all my special colleagues
@HywelDdaHB
- words can’t express my gratitude for over 4 wonderful years - thank you all from the very bottom of my heart x (this is my last Hywel dda tweet) x
Really grateful to be able to spend the night shift with
@ashkerr90
and learn more about the clinical site manager role - hugely important role for the hospital with such responsibility too - and done with a smile, care, compassion and hard work -thank you
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
I am personally grateful for this step given the position across the NHS - I’m desperately sad for everyone who will be affected by this in terms of education, livelihood and well being - we all need to dig in and get through this next period - the nhs will still be here for you
Working within the NHS across Wales is different to anywhere else I have ever worked in terms of mutual support for each other - shout out to WAST colleagues to for their unwavering support and effort
@HywelDdaHB
Today is
#InternationalDayoftheMidwife

Huge thank you to every single one of my colleagues

My thoughts also with all my old colleagues
@HywelDdaHB
@UHP_NHS
too who I know are also going through a very tough time presently, NHS staff are awesome and on the toughest days remember tomorrow always comes
Appreciating it’s a beautiful day but looking at the news as I get home from work I can’t help feeling upset to see the masses of people flocking to our beaches - we are in the middle of a pandemic and people are being harmed by this virus
Awesome just got my flu jab whilst walking the corridor
@UHSFT
bumped into these lovely colleagues and bingo all done in 5 minutes - thank you
@BrookeSheath
and Terri - awesome work
I’ve realised this week I’ve survived 2 full years as COO
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
couldn’t have ever imagined it would be how it has been but definitely immensely lucky to have had the privilege to have spent this time at such an amazing place with just the best people
a quick visit to Ward G6 to thank our ward clerk Wendy for some exceptional kindness and care delivered recently - she’s been here for over 20 years and loves her job-demonstrates that delivering hospital care to patients and families is such a team effort - awesome Wendy
@UHSFT
Huge emergency demand, growing waiting lists, no money, industrial action, covid spiking, reduced investment in out of hospital care, low morale - this is the context currently - but that aside I still witness amazing caring colleagues every day - nhs staff are truly amazing
Good to see our individual thank yous to our people start to land on mats today - we thought a lot and we cared a lot (sleepless nights cared) when others issued before us - thank you to
@Stevey_1979
for organising and thinking this through so much
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
This morning I am thinking of all my colleagues
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
who’ve got out of bed and left their loved ones and / or homes to come to work to care for those that need them - thank you every single one of you - especially this year more than ever
Decided to unlock my account today - had some poor experience with some tweets that I were a bit personal and impacting me so decided to lock down but going to give it another go with open house to comment on my posts - all my own opinions and views - not always right of course
Shadowing surgical reg tonight - 40 minutes in and I’ve already conceded I don’t know much about the work that goes on in this world - so lucky to have this opportunity to learn
Today I visited our supply chain team - these are probably some of the greatest heroes working tirelessly to keep the hospital stocked - never before have we discussed supply chain so much - I’ve really taken you all for granted before and for that I’m sorry you are brill
@UHSFT
Today I had the immense privilege of serving food and cleaning up with Sharon, Sharon and Lisa on C2 - they were so kind, caring and compassionate and took so much care with the food they served - thank you to you all I really appreciated it and value very much all you do
@UHSFT
Extremely lucky today to spend the morning shadowing one of our senior sisters for a district nursing team - the work they do is incredible and the kindness and care I witnessed was truly outstanding
@HywelDdaHB
Signing out of my emails now for 10 days, (a) I trust everyone I work with and (b) I am not deluded about my own impact ! Great teams
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
thank you and I hope everyone has a lovely weekend
You’ll see from my tweets my day has been challenging and busy with some real highlights but the winner for my shout out is this young colleague Megan who allowed me to listen to her taking calls in our patient services centre
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
the kindness shone through
I have done the best thing today spending the morning shadowing a patient journey from Day unit to theatre to recovery to day unit - huge thank you
@decsamethasone
@adelie0404
for allowing me to observe you in action and
@MitziBGarcia
@UHSFT
amazing care and teams
to say a massive thank you to Lee, Adam, Jim (my trainer), Iain and Nar tonight for all supporting me in different ways as I took my next step in my portering journey - training to go solo (didn’t really do much solo as all two handed jobs) but feel better equipped
@UHSFT
awesome
Shout out too to the spire - keeping some of our cancer services going at this difficult time - a great partnership supporting each other thank you
@UHSFT
And for tomorrow when the pubs open I hope our population is sensible and thoughtful as our amazing emergency team and the rest of our hospital are prepared but hoping and very much deserve a normal day - they’ve been incredible the way they have responded
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
Today i have made 6 months

I am immensely proud to be working with our mortuary team
@UHSFT

I am so proud of our infection prevention team

as a colleague - a true covid hero
@UHSFT
@SotonChildHosp
Just saying I have an immense amount of respect for the “managers” I am work with - immensely capable, kind people who have devoted their careers to public service when I see many who could have earned a lot more money elsewhere - thank you for all you do
