Social workers have some of the worst working conditions, decreasing wellbeing, and have seen lowest wage growth of any sector in the past 10yrs. Yet 89% of SWs remain proud of the job they do. Gotta think that pride is doing some serious heavy lifting in keeping services afloat.

Some quotes from sw students in my research discussing the impact of fast-track training on them and their futures. Thanks to all those who participated. Remember these students r also more likely to come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Seems... wrong? 🤷

I also submit that you need to recognise that much of the work highlighting the various weaknesses in the report has been done in people’s own time, in contrast to the 1.5 years and huge government resourcing the review team had. It shouldn't be this way.

In a previous thread I predicted 6 key players that would avoid scrutiny in the #MacAlisterReview . Not only have they all avoided any scrutiny, but the review relied heavily on them for evidence & has shaped key proposals around them. A sequel thread 1/10

Based on what we know about Josh MacAlister, I think we can safely say there are a number of areas/orgs/people that will avoid any scrutiny under his #carereview . Here's a few we can pretty much guarantee will escape any challenge (add your own!):

Details of Josh MacAlister's new advisory role with the Department for Education released, focused on implementing his review. Duties include to "assist in maintaining the positive relationships built during the review" 🤨

Just one of the dozens of reasons Josh MacAlister is not an "Independent" chair & is unsuited to be heading the children's social care review. He was founder and CEO of Frontline until 2021, Frontline's umbrella network Transform Society currently collaborating with Caretech 1/7

A new study from Teach First finds need for more "high quality" teachers 🤨 Wasn't that ostensibly the issue they were set up to address over 20 years ago?

My article on recent developments with the Social Work Degree Apprenticeship published in @BASW_UK Professional Social Work magazine. Strong interest, challenge to fast-tracks, but also surveillance, wasted resources, British Values and segregation of students. Pain & Gain!

DfE advertising for new Chair of Social Work England (£450 a day)- predictably no requirement for them to have any knowledge/experience of social work, but they are required to "make a strong contribution" and "respond proactively" to government policy.🙄

Despite what some have suggested, the #carereview Case for Change is incredibly uncritical and forgiving of the government, including providing them with a lot excuses to justify their decimation of children's services over the past decade, and not introduce more funding now.

Good response from @BASW_UK in relation to the #MacAlisterReview . Many important points including in relation to IRO proposal, Frontlines role in downgrading the profession, failure to understand SW role & the lack of evidence behind many recommendations.

Social work student bursaries and education support grants now frozen for 9 YEARS! Meanwhile fast-track programmes like Frontline and Think Ahead continue to be disproportionately funded for cohorts that are disproportionately white, male, middle class.

The stories from individual social workers in the comments under this article are worth a read, in particular by those making decisions in/for Social Work England. The impact that this has had is an absolute scandal and the regulator should be ashamed.

Frontline yet again being granted lightening quick access to the new minister, part of a trend. Amongst many concerns, it is worrying how this quickly inducts them into a particular view of SW, significant for ministers with no experience/understanding in this area.
