I’m profoundly grateful to the children and parents who agreed to take part and share the most intimate parts of their life. Also, huge respect to Coventry and for agreeing to film

In this episode I speak with social worker and author, Rhian Taylor (@rhiantaylorkent) about her work, and her wonderful book, Fosterboy. A really thoughtful, insightful, and therapeutically minded practitioner whom I learned a lot speaking to. https://t.co/SKyFZl3oEr

@RichardDevineSW When we understand the function of the parents behaviour we find the key to breaking the cycle of generational trauma spinning over and over again. The foundation of this means; helping that parent speak their truth and recognising what harmful survival mechanisms they employ.

superb webinar this lunchtime about parental advocacy. Thankyou @RichardDevineSW @familygroupmeet @MG852to44 @diaz_clive and everyone else involved! parental advocacy isn’t something we do to be nice to parents — it’s critically important 👏 #socialwork #parentadvocacy

Super🧵here from my very experienced social work colleague @RichardDevineSW about why it is not helpful to demonise or to 'other' a parent who has a child on a child protection plan👇 #safeguarding #childprotection #socialwork #camhs
1/8 A 🧵… As a child protection social worker you work with some of the most troubled, dangerous, vulnerable, victimised and traumatised members of our society. They have severe drug or alcohol problems, mental health issues and domestically violent relationships.

8/8 The question is not therefore, how/why can’t you’ be a better parent… But, what are the psychological (past and present) and social barriers that get in the way of then being the type of parent they want to be (and are capable of being)?

7/8 And even those that cause harm, also show their children love, affection and care. They often want them to have a better upbringing that they did.

6/8 Most people have mild to moderate coping strategies that don’t interfere too much with parenting, whereas parents we work with have moderate to severe strategies.
