I watched the movie "Amadeus" (1984) and wrote a bit about it.

I felt sure this 1984 film would prominently feature the synth-pop hit “Rock Me Amadeus” by Falco someplace in it. It didn’t—not even over the closing credits! Wikipedia tells us that the film merely...

1. Jack Kirby was born 106 years ago today. I often think about this photo from World War II, where he's on furlough from military training, standing next to his wife Roz (Rosalind Goldstein). He had a certain grim satisfaction at the job ahead.

New Fogknife post about "Unnatural Ends", the latest mystery novel from my old #InteractiveFiction pal Christopher Huang (@misericordius). https://t.co/LV8yNhv3nk

While planning this post, I remembered that I had, in fact, written about a Christopher Huang work before. Back in 2013, I was invited to review all the nominees for the previous year’s XYZZY award...

@TheAtlantic The life of the Internet is one of things coming and going, and Twitter was one of those things. Twitter was always difficult to use in a healthy way, but as Chris Hitchens or Winston Churchill or some other wit said about alcohol: "I got more out of it than it got out of me."

On Independence Day treat yourself to this lovely profile of one of a true miracle of American culture, Samuel Delany.
I profiled Samuel R. Delany—sci-fi pioneer, gay radical, literary genius—for @NewYorker’s fiction issue

New Fogknife post about “Black Narcissus" (1947). I liked it! Among other things, was struck by how much it reminded me of the FMV video game "Immortality" (2022).

This is where I’m at. While it’s funny to laugh at the place falling apart, Twitter has been a critical part of my job and my life for a long time. I’ve met people I love on here, work contacts, grown a newsletter, and yeah it’s got me through shit which is embarrassing to admit

I have over 400 hours of experience playing Civilization V. Vladimir Putin should have known that when his national happiness fell below -20 he would start spawning random insurgents. Here’s what he should do next: 🧵(1/?)

Happy #SummerSolstice! Installing a spray cap on a hydrant is STILL a fun way to cool off on a hot summer day in #NYC. If you ask your local @FDNY Firehouse, they'll install a spray cap for free. If you see an open hydrant without a spray cap, please report it to @nyc311!
New Yorkers have been using fire hydrants to cool off for more than a century. 💦 During a deadly heatwave in 1896, the fire dept opened hydrants to spray down the streets. Parents brought their children to enjoy this makeshift waterpark, and the rest is history! #SummerSolstice

Witch's cat, 16th-century woodcut. Featured in Jon Crabb's essay "Woodcuts and Witches" about the witch craze of early modern Europe, and how the mass-produced woodcut helped forge the archetype of the broom-riding crone so familiar today: https://t.co/D0J60jjkiM
