*Guy on the subway sees my Dungeons & Dragons jacket*
G: Heeeey~! D&D!
D&D is the best!
Me: Yeah!
G: I had the craziest D&D thing happen to me...
(I assume we're going to talk about hus current campaign or playing when he was younger.)
He steps off the train, but turns back to look at me with a big smile and a fist raised as he yells "D&D!!"
Everyone else packed on the train during rush hour looks at me like I'm insane.
Today is starting off strong.

There's a tendency for students using perspective to start a drawing with vanishing points, randomly putting things in and hoping it works.
In my latest lecture, I stressed the importance of starting with a well-staged focal point first, then finding the perspective to match it.
This is the most basic argument against crypto that I tell all the people who call me. The tech doesn't work, and the fundamental idea is ahistorical and flawed. Writing it down so I don't have to repeat myself all the time.
The Case Against Crypto
*Dude glances around and sees what station we're pulling up to*
G: Oh shit, this is my stop. Gotta go.
Me: Thanks for the story.
G: One more quick thing - Wanna know why my guy was called "Dripwell?"
Me: Sure.
G: Because he had a huge dwarf DICK yoooo~!
G: I got in a bar brawl for real.
Me: Like, in real life?
G: Yeah, yeah, YEAH! A for real bar fight and, as it was happening, all I could think was "Aw shit, this is just like D&D!!"
Me: Really?
G: Yeah, man and it was a nat 20! A complete tackle to the ground and that dude went down like a sack of potatoes!
Me: What about the other guy?
G: As soon as the first guy went down I scrambled over him and ran right the fuck out of there!
G: Drippy knows when to get the fuck out of a bad situation. Move those dwarf legs and ruuuuuun, amIright?
Me: Wow. I, uh, I'm glad you didn't get hurt.
G: My shoulder hurt for a couple days. Adrenalin and all that.
Me: Okaay~
G: So I've got two dudes ready to kick my ass and I'm strategizing like it's all a game. Y'know, improve my armor class or disarm 'em or just anything!
Me: How'd that go?
G: HAHAHA, that's the craziest part!
G: In my head' I'm freaking out but I'm also thinkin' like "What would Dripwell my Dwarf do" y'know?!
Me: Sure.
G: Well, Drips would fuckin' go for their legs...
Me: So you-
G: So, that's what I did!
It's tax time so I'm seeing a lot of stressful tweets from freelancer friends. No one gets into freelance art to crunch numbers, but managing that income is part of the job.
Everyone's situation is different, but here are some broad suggestions to help you out in the future:
I archived the conversation here for future generations to enjoy:
Attached here are photos of my jacket. Unfortunately, it's sold out everywhere online.
And lastly, of course, Dripwell will show up in a future fantasy story I write. :D
Whatever short term $ advantage Hasbro gained, it's an incredibly foolish long term strategy.
When a division is up 40% year-over-year and you still severely cut staff, you decimate company morale and communicate that no amount of hard work or success will be good enough.
"How do you get so much work done?"
Step 1: Don't spend 4+ hours a day arguing with people online.
Step 2: Use that time to do work and other things that bring you joy instead.
Step 3: That's it.
Another perspective drawing lesson:
How to quickly check scale and proportion without a grid!
After critiquing a student's rough room construction I asked if they were okay with me using it as a demonstration since the error they made is a common one.
Surreal experience just now.
Our Animation department gets 5 minutes notice that
@VancityReynolds
is stopping by to tour the facility.
I tell people to throttle back their expectations. There is no way he'll take photos with people. It'll be too crazy.
I was wrong.
What a champ
Received an email from a struggling would-be screenwriter looking at comics as a way to get their story out (and, of course, have it turned into a movie).
Comics are not the dumping ground for your unpublished novel/screenplay/TV show pitch.
Honest.
Today, one of my students nervously asked me-
"Is
@matthewmercer
as nice in person as he seems online?"
And the answer is "no."
He is even _nicer_.
I was stunned at how kind and generous he was.
I know it sounds a bit dramatic, but we hit it off immediately. He's the real deal.
Inside Versailles is stunning.
That said, if I was a French peasant I would have been in the mob that killed all these bastards.
The opulence almost makes you physically ill.
Just popping onto Twitter after my morning class-
Apparently you people _really_ like Dripwell! :D
Thanks for all the kind words and signal boosts on this.
Cab driver: What brought you to LA?
Me: I was here for Comic-Con and then came to LA after for work.
Cab: You worked Comic-Con?
Me: Yeah. I write comics for Marvel.

Seeing both of these this morning is quite the one-two punch.
Instead of automating menial tasks to free up time for relaxation and creativity, people are hellbent on automating creativity to chain us to menial tasks.
If you haven't seen "The Thief and the Cobbler," seek it out and marvel at some of the most insanely fun and nuanced classical animation ever drawn on 1's...
The film was never properly completed, but the original scenes are jaw-dropping.

Nope.
Corporate entertainment/press is always looking for the next trend to elevate or declare dead, when the answer has _always_ been the same-
QUALITY CHARACTERS AND STORIES
That's it.
That's the magic formula.
Do that. Keep doing that.

An artist who occasionally sends me portfolio pages sent a message wondering if they've been blacklisted because they're not getting any response to their latest samples.
I fully understand how frustrating and disheartening that can be, but the answer is probably much simpler-

Okay,
@JacksonLanzing
, on your recommendation I'm watching RRR and it's an Epic Bollywood Shakespearean Musical Action Tragedy.
Don't watch any trailers, friends.
Just dive in and get ready for a ri~~ide.
@RRRMovie
#RRR
Ms. Marvel is correct. :)
As fun an Easter Egg as referencing 616 was in Multiverse of Madness, I do wish they'd followed the previously established numbering.
Had friends over tonight and showed them the glory that is RRR.
We convinced them not to watch any trailers so they could go into it unspoiled.
As expected, their minds were blown. Second viewing, still a complete rush.

Let's get
#mikewieringo
trending for all the right reasons.
Mike's work was and is the most heroic and joyous version of each character I can imagine. Every image he put to paper felt hopeful and powerful.

Normally I draw on paper for my in-class demos, but the document camera died so we moved to a different class where there was only a digital tablet set up.
Here are the in-class sketches I did while talking about drawing organic forms, with notes added after class.
An animation industry friend reached out to ask me about creating his own graphic novel.
He assumed, like a lot of entertainment people do, that he could waltz in, get his concept published and then pitch it as a movie/TV show.
RRR has the emotional highs and lows of three or four films packed into its bombastic 3 hour runtime.
Highly recommended, and the less you know going in beforehand, the better.
Remember six months ago when I mentioned that comic piracy numbers were easily 20x legitimate buyers and it was a real problem?
Sometime yesterday a bunch of other comic pros looked closer, saw the numbers and the cold chill of it really hit.
Yup.
If you proudly describe yourself as a "contrarian" or just do stuff "to get a rise out of people", you're not the intellectual powerhouse you imagine yourself to be, you're just a selfish fool with stunted social skills.
I've posted up examples of student work from the first year Animation Layout & Design class I teach at
@SenecaCollege
(like these Kitchen scenes attached here), but that doesn't really give you the scope of what one of these final drawings entail.
Let me show you-
Jim Zub is a pen name. "Zubkavich" is my Ukranian family name.
My great-grandparents came to Canada and never returned so I don't have deep ties to Ukraine, but it's part of my family history and gut-wrenching to think about the lives that will be lost for political maneuvering
After the class lecture, one of my students asked me-
"Mr. Zub, I know you like Dungeons & Dragons and do some work with them. Have you heard of Critical Role?"
That turned into a bit of a story...
Why does
#TheMandalorian
work so well?
◾ Character-focused
◾ Clear stakes
◾ Conflict that drives interesting decisions and reveals motivations
◾ Iconic imagery
◾ Well-balanced nostalgia
◾ Strong and quotable dialogue
◾ Raw parental instincts - Must protect the asset :D
Once you understand how to draw things that look solid and consistent you need to learn where to put those things in your scene to organize visual information for the viewer.

Another old man moment in class today-
Students watching old Disney pencil test footage.
Student- The animation is beautiful, but why is it all gray and flickering?
Me- It was drawn on paper and then filmed for the line test.
S- Why didn't they just do it on computer?

That's not how
#TheEternals
looked in 1976.
Modern reprints use colors that are WAY too saturated, giving the false impression that old comics were garish. The newsprint absorbed color, creating more subtlety and appeal even with bombastic Jack Kirby art.
It read more like this
Dynamite contacted me in May about a possible project and I made it clear I couldn't do it because, amongst other things, they were courting outrage dollars via Comicsgate. I made it pretty clear to them that this stuff would bite them in the ass.
Welcome to July.

I've worked for almost every major comic publisher in North America.
Big or small, the people at each company make it a pleasure or hassle, a success or failure.
If you treat staff like replaceable widgets, don't be surprised if you quickly lose loyalty, quality, and innovation
Conceptually, I already love this kind of stuff, but Carl Sagan's excellent vocal timbre and obvious excitement for the material he's showing here makes it irresistibly engaging.

Creative people should have their own website.
Always.
Platforms change.
They rise/fall in popularity.
They throttle viewership and algorithms.
They alter their deal.
Use FB, Twitter, Insta, TikTok, YT, but never leave yourself completely reliant on them for your web presence.
Just heard the news that
@RealKevinConroy
has passed away. Wishing his friends and family strength and solace.
For so many of us, he was Batman.
He exemplified the most heroic qualities of the character and inspired so many of us.
