For the past year, I've been tracking a quiet wave of child care deregulation efforts. The consequences of these policies for underpaid, overworked early educators, as well as America's children (during a pivotal time of brain development), are stark: https://t.co/qUa4MSq653

In rural communities, including in Ohio, Head Start not only is often one of the few available child care center options for working parents, but it also has an outsized role in the local economy, as @jackiemader reports for @hechingerreport. https://t.co/lrEOrdGpiQ

Child care centers were off-limits to immigration authorities. How has that changed in recent weeks? As raids ramp up, child care programs search for ways to ease fears for children, staff and families. Reporting by @jackiemader

Some parents have to choose between a job and a government-funded child care subsidy. Many receiving the subsidy live in fear that any increase in salary could result in officials taking it away. @HechingerReport’s @JackieMader reports on the dilemma. https://t.co/AoAy3EU858

Such an important story by @karinbrulliard. It covers so many important issues: lack of child care funding, the way care is looked down on by many lawmakers, parents turning down raises to get assistance, challenges running a child care business, etc

As TLC For Tots and the parents depending on it worry about the future, lawmakers in this deeply conservative state say government shouldn’t play a role.

What is the state of child care like in places trying to deregulate? Hundreds of pages of inspection reports highlighted disturbing conditions for kids, signaling a need for more support for teachers, not larger groups and teen workers. My latest: https://t.co/wRIOvcNDqe

Can a 14-year-old really be a child care teacher? In at least one state, lawmakers have pushed that as a solution to child care shortages. In other states, lawmakers believe teen workers and larger group sizes—not higher pay for early educators— are the way to "fix" child care.
