We don't know what's going to happen to Nicolle and her family. Her detention has dredged up so many questions around the "why." Why was someone who gave back so much targeted? “This family is not a threat,” wrote her mentor. “They are an asset.” https://t.co/dkfgX9vwuJ

Nicolle Orozco Forero was one of the few immigrant women who provide child care for American children with disabilities. Then she and her seriously ill son were taken into ICE custody.

One story that stood out to me was Sarah Kasnick. A child in her care was on that waitlist. The child has autism and is nonverbal — no daycare in the area would take her. Since Nicolle was detained, Kasnick quit her job bc she can't find care. The ripple effect:

Many families were on a waitlist to start at her day care when her license arrived. No one else would take their kids. Big Dreams Day Care she was going to call it, for the dreams she wanted the kids in her care to strive for, & the ones finally coming to fruition for her.

But the family has been in detention in Texas for almost a month. And their community back in Seattle is reeling. They've been sending letters of support, rallied, organized a GoFundMe. I'll link the GoFundMe here: https://t.co/6XyaoatmxW

Her 7yo son, Juan, is seriously ill. He has a kidney condition doctors have been working to diagnose. His doctors sent a letter to ICE asking he stay in the U.S.: “We kindly request that you consider this medical necessity in your review of his immigration status."

Nicolle was detained at a routine ICE appt that she's been going to at least monthly for a year. She had no criminal record. She thought she was doing everything right, taking classes & getting licensed to open her own center. She was taken into custody w/ her husband & 2 sons.

Her work keeps a precarious safety net together. Without Nicolle, families who have nowhere else to turn for care have to make difficult decisions about how to survive and keep their children safe. Without her, the safety net snaps. That’s what happened the day she was detained.

Nicolle's speciality was working with children who have disabilities. It's a job in deep shortage; one few Americans want to take on. She stood out for her patience and care. Here's an excerpt:

Child care is an industry that is 20% immigrant women. We set out to tell the story of what happened when those women started to be detained. Over the past 2 weeks, we've talked to the families Nicolle served about the vital role she played.

Not really on here, but making an exception. Nicolle Orozco Forero is one of the thousands of immigrant women who provide child care for American kids — she cared for children w/ disabilities. Now, she and her seriously ill son have been detained by ICE: https://t.co/dkfgX9vwuJ

Attorneys for queer families have been inundated with requests for adoptions, a safeguard LGBTQ+ parents are turning to to make sure they retain parental rights to their nonbiological kids. Many are worried a Trump administration could curb those rights. https://t.co/B8eFwhv2gU

Congress will have to take up the child tax credit next year. On the campaign trail, there was a lot of talk of a bigger credit ($5,000+). But a Republican-controlled Congress is unlikely to go that big. Here's what we're hearing is probably coming: https://t.co/PDhDM9KpbW

A Republican-controlled Congress will decide its fate next year, but early conversations indicate those pledges may be empty.

In the lead up to Election Day, presidential candidates had big ambitions for the future of the child tax credit, which is set to expire in 2025. But there is unlikely to be a major expansion coming to 1 of the most popular policies for American families. https://t.co/PDhDM9KpbW

Trump picks Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who recently represented Oregon in Congress, to lead the Department of Labor. She has often been one of the lone Republican supporters of various pro-union bills and has advocated for improvements to the child care system. https://t.co/2iUHDEV0hz

Trump's Treasury pick is reportedly Scott Bessent, the billionaire hedge fund manager. He'll be in charge of carrying out Trump's tariffs plan, expected to have a larger impact on low-income people (most are women) and low-wage workers (also women). https://t.co/MK0lKTRHYc

Bessent will lead President-elect Donald Trump’s Treasury Department. Bessent is the first out gay member of Trump’s Cabinet.

Trump's pick of Rep. Matt Gaetz to serve as his attorney general is a choice that could put the Florida Republican in charge of the *federal department that investigated him over sex trafficking accusations* and ultimately decided not to bring charges. https://t.co/jd7zRDQscu

Gaetz would lead the Department of Justice, which last year declined to bring charges against him in a sex trafficking investigation.
