@Millar_Colin
No idea why he didn’t try to do a deal with Sporting. Takes big commercial cut, returns to city a hero, big opportunity to win a rare league for them.
I miss a lot of things about Ireland, but the ability to find a negative in a positive is something else.
Great victory against a very strong South Africa in Paris- everyone happy ? Not a chance. Cue debate about partitionist elements allegedly inferred in Zombie.
Comical.
I am delighted to announce that I will be joining The Sydney Morning Herald at the end of August as a sportswriter.
I cannot wait to get started. It's been 20 years in the making.
A huge thanks to my close friend
@donaldgmcrae
, without him, this would never have happened.
This semi-final akin to attending an after-party after an incredible night out.
Nobody is enjoying it, we shouldn't have come, but we are all still here, hoping that it will get better.
We are sipping on the rugby equivalent of warm lager from cheap cans.
Given the month that's in it, this is one of my favourite pieces of writing I've done. It was never easy for my Dad to get tickets to see Ireland play rugby at Lansdowne Road, but when he did, it provided memories for a lifetime.
Amazing respect from
@mickconlan11
on
@RealCFrampton
talking about their great friendship. Said it many times, boxing has done so much good in Belfast, and continues to.
This weekend
@RealCFrampton
will become Ireland's greatest boxer. A man supported by all sides of the community. A friend who rang me in the depths of vicious depression to help when prepping for a world title fight. More than a fighter. He represents what's good in our country.
@Sharpeyofficial
@ManUtd
Brian McClair looks like a kindly philosophy lecturer at Glasgow University who enjoys a fine whiskey and following Partick Thistle of a weekend.
Went to
@BelfastGiants
last night. Seriously impressed by atmosphere and crowd on a rainy and freezing Wednesday night in Belfast. Crowd packed with jerseys with players name and a brilliant singing section. Pro ice hockey in Belfast 22 years later and still thriving..
You arrive in Fiji and it's Drua absolutely everywhere, players smiling at you from bank adverts, on water bottles and the Super W team on the front of the newspaper.
It's some movement.
Got into taxi, driver started belting 'Ireland's Call' as a welcome. Some spot.
Look at rugby union in Australia, won the world cup in 1999, hosted Lions 2001 and World Cup in 2003. All ingredients for union to boom in a sports mad country. Instead stayed behind pay tv while NRL and AFL was on terrestrial TV. Game never recovered. Heed the warning 6 Nations.
So good to meet
@RealCFrampton
for coffee in Ballyhack this week when back home after three years. First met over ten years ago when I interviewed him in Tiger's Bay and he turned up in a tiny Corsa. The same warm person who remains the pride of this country.
The simple solution for Northern Ireland. Enforced integrated education from P1 onwards. Done. Enforced segregation throughout childhood is hardly a recipe for peace.
@Everton
let me introduce Mark from Australia. He lost his eyesight due to brain and spine cancer, but he ladores your club. Getting up for matches to listen on radio in the middle of the night with his Granddad. Can you get behind this Aussie Toffee?
@TomClonan
I remember vividly the last time I was home in Dublin, I didn’t have exact change and only had a card in a coffee shop. Lady behind me paid the 4 euros and said it’s Christmas don’t worry about it. That’s the Ireland we cannot ever take for granted.
When I was 16 I wrote a letter to
@winkerwatson1
and he not only replied but showed me around the BBC. Left me determined to work in sport and now at AFL in Australia. Thank you for that great kindness all those years ago and delighted to see you continue to thrive at home.
@MarcoMasotti_
@Springboks
Ireland did the same. They were experimenting with a malfunctioning lineout for the first quarter to see how they would cope under pressure. Good run out for them.
I am still bemused why John Cooney cannot get into an Irish squad. I asked former Ulster players is he difficult to coach or get on with, I was told exactly the opposite. A genuinely great guy who is completely coachable. Not only an elite 9, but also a great goal kicker. Mad.
@piersmorgan
Michael Jordan donated his final year salary at Wizards to charity. If he really wanted to stay he could have made it work financially with his wages.
This is the kind of piece I love to write.
@luke_keeler
had a dream and went after it regardless of what the odds were. A gentleman that Ireland needs to get behind.
Two years ago Luke Keeler was juggling his boxing career with his full-time job as an engineer. Now he is fighting for a world title | Interview by

Absolutely terrible stash lads looks like a 10 euro job in a Lanzarote market. 90% of transition year students could have done a far better job. How did we fall so far?!
The likes of Lowry, Baloucoune and Hume will rarely have as good a shop window today to prove that they are of international caliber and can mix it with the very best in Irish rugby. Let's hope they grab the opportunity.
At Coogee Oval alongside the media colleagues, I specifically asked Eddie Jones had he spoken to any third parties, specifically recruitment agencies or executive search agencies.
"Not that I'm aware of" was his response.
He's now saying he did.
Today my Father Neil Drennan retires at the age of 68 in Belfast. Brought up by his Mum in Dublin, he built everything through hard work and showing decency to everyone. Deserves a long and healthy retirement. Really proud to call him my Dad.
One of my favourite pieces, far from the bright lights. Tom's last game was against his opposite number and hero
@BrianODriscoll
What followed was a huge fight to survive.
The other thing people need to understand about
@RealCFrampton
is that for all of his exceptional talents as a boxer, in my opinion he's a even better person. At one of the worst times in my life with depression, he was there with much needed kind words that I've never forgotten.
What a pleasure it was to write about
@BelfastGiants
for the
@guardian
. Looking forward to people reading the piece. This team highlights everything I love about sport. It can absolutely be far more than a game.
Arrived in Sydney with no job, no friends and no idea what was going to happen five years. Returning tomorrow with Christina to have our wedding in France. Life works in strange ways.
Said goodbye to the AFL where I worked as head of media for NSW and the ACT for the last 2.5 years to take up a new opportunity.
Never dreamt that I would work at the SCG where I used to listen to the Ashes there from Belfast as a kid on a winter's night.
It was a pleasure.
Absolutely delighted
@annyonuora
My Hidden Race has been longlisted for William Hill Sports Book of the year.
Huge thanks to everyone that made it possible to get here.
I loved writing this piece.
Came out of nowhere. Had coffee with an old friend from Inst in Belfast. He asked me, have you seen ryan Caldwell? I said I hadn't. I last met him in Bath after a game. It then sent me on a search to find him.
Ulster Rugby certainly cannot take their loyal fanbase or interest for granted in NI.
The Belfast Giants are bending over backwards to drive interest and engagement with media while playing in elite Euro competition.
Great to see.
Christina and I are leaving Sydney very soon to head back home to Europe for a year. Perhaps not the greatest career move, or financially. But I need = to spend more time with my parents. Whether that's going for an Indian with Mum, or going to rugby with Dad. It matters more..
I always want to tell stories in sport that matter, and I can’t think of many better than
@BelfastGiants
. The pride of my hill rimmed town of Belfast.
My favourite rugby anecdote is that
@DanCarter
nearly ended up playing for
@InstoniansRugby
, only for injuries to lead him to stay in Canterbury. Instead of lining up kicks for the All Blacks in Sydney easily could have been lining up post-match kebabs at the Sphinx. Regrets.
I've never seen a buzz in Paris like this before a rugby game. The place is absolutely jammed with fans from all over the world. Met Argentinians, South Africans and of course lots of Irish.
Also for Australians, a bad double espresso is around 7 bucks. Count your blessings.
My Dad turns 70 today. There is nobody I admire more in life and one of the greatest joys has been our shared love of rugby. This piece was for him, and I cannot wait to come home to Ireland and stand on a freezing terrace with him once again.
This is my friend Mark who has just joined the GAWA all the way in Sydney. He's been through brain and spine cancer, losing his sight and a lot of hearing. Someone who has maintained the love and joy of sport. We're going to see
@IrishRugby
v
@qantaswallabies
in June. Can't wait.
